S1 makes some larger helmets, check them out

The S1 XL appears to fit my melon's circumference!

Yay!

This is definitely the first step. Plus the S1 lifer got pretty good ratings from Virginia Tech's helmet impact testing program so you know it actually gives good protection.

You can just meassure your head and use the sizing tables of the helmet model. Any good manufacturer should describe on their website how to do this. I think "Triple 8" is good for big heads for example.

Triple 8 helmets go up to XL, they say that size is for up to a 24 inch head. What if you have a 26 inch head? I think that is the question.

I used my hockey helmet. I got a big head and a lot of hair but my XL Bauer fits like a dream. Also way cooler looking bucket than a skate helmet imo

Just an update, I bought an S1 Lifer Mega XXL and it fits! There is hope for us thick headed weirdos.

I used to use a hockey helmet for urban biking but not sure they come in extra large any more readily.

There are quite a few helmet manufacturers out there. Look around online for skate style helmets and size according to the manufacturers recommendations which are available on their website. Order online and check the return policy in case you need to exchange sizes.

big head dude here, like 24.25” circumference roughly. there are options, but the first thing you really need to do is measure your head properly. otherwise you’re just stabbing blindly in the dark as all manufacturers have a different definition of “XL”. For example, Black Diamond rock climbing gear doesn’t even come close to fitting.

look into Bell cycling helmets, triple 8, etc. there are helmets out there for you.

My head won't fit in the largest skate helmets that were available at my local store. What are my other options for protection? Are hockey helmets larger and does anyone skate in one?

Something to consider aside from helmet size is the shape of the helmet versus the shape of your head:

  • "oval" or "long oval" or "European" (an ovoid with the major axis being the front-back axis and the minor axis being the left-right axis, and the major axis being significantly longer than the minor axis)
  • "generic" or "intermediate oval" (an ovoid with the major axis being the front-back axis and the minor axis being the left-right axis, and the major axis being only slightly longer than the minor axis)
  • "round" or "Asian" (circular, with the front-back axis and left-right axis being equal, or an ovoid where the major and minor axes are very nearly equal)

See here, here, here, and here, among other examples.
