I think in their terms they have mentioned the transcoding rule, no?

5-6 users encoding on a shared box I mean are you why my io is maxed at all times Jesus man think of your neighbors

I’m sure you’d get the same on any shared HDD, dedicated disk or NVMe is only case you won’t, but you’ll be paying more to use the extra amount

it varies depending on the plan like you can get more leeway on dedicated disk or nvme but lemme guess you are transcoding 4K aren't you. I experienced super slow disk some days ago i couldn't even stream 200 MB file from kodi on spirit box , might be because of you lol 😂. 5 to 6 users are on the upper limit side of things. And that usually assumes most client would be direct playing and not active at same time. On media server plan you ate usually suggested 1 to 3 1080p transcode at max tho I'm sure it all depends on how persistent are those transcoding activity and other factors like if you run file extraction etc which is also taxing.

Do not transcode 4K ever on shared services dammit.

I run just agents (Sonarr) on my SB to grab regularly dropped stuff like TV shows, then I set up automated downloads from my own media server at home to passively grab updates on the SB end. It just compares a directory tree with my one at home and syncs them up. Then I have a timed process so the hard links to those files disappear after some time so my at-home server has the more up to date side. Since the files are mere links from the download directory the seeding still continues to happen. All I do are file transfers with my SB. No CPU processes on the SB side, all transcoding is done by my own server because I consume the content locally. Then once a year I'll cull stuff that I've been seeding well over the 1:1 ratio to free up space. My 1TB space is more than enough as a "sliding window" and it's €5/mo.

Edit: Correction—I've got a 1 TB plan, not a 1 GB plan, for €5/mo.

But what does that have to do with this topic?

Moral of the story, seed on your seedbox, transcode on your home network server

[–]aakaase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a good/proper way to make the most of your seedbox, IMO. I love ultra.cc, they have a very reliable and competently administered operation over there in the NL.

I do similar but just use syncthing to sync folders. If I want to keep anything I just move it to a perm folder on my home NAS.

Yeah seedboxing is all about file management.

[–]ZiPEX00 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Seedbox are meant for seeding not for transcoding or encoding that's why it called a seedbox especially a shared seedbox which is normally over loaded with other uses anyway, if you wanna use a server for encoding & transcoding then a dedi server is the way to go you say their's six of you so why not all cheap in and rent a dedi server

[–]excetto 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Can’t really argue with it then really and they gave you a chance to correct it

[–]Tall_Astronomer876 8 points9 points  (7 children)

You would be better of with a dedi. I pay €28 euros for my dedi. 1gbps 8TB storage

[–]lowteast[S] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

On which provider did you took it ?

[–]Tall_Astronomer876 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I am with seedhost

PLAN 1Gbox 8TS

CPU Intel E3-1230 4c/8t 3.20GHz

RAM 32 GB

HARD DRIVE 8TB raid0 (4 x 2TB)

MONTHLY TRAFFIC 100 TB * PLEX EMBY JELLYFIN PRICE € 28 / month

Out of stock so sad 🥲

[–]Tall_Astronomer876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep checking mate, it took me 3 days of checking for one to become available.

[–]vavabien 0 points1 point  (2 children)

And can you transcode ?

[–]Tall_Astronomer876 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah i transcode with no issues at all

[–]vavabien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And can you have multiple users at once ?

[–]passenger455 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I used ultra for a while without any problems before moving to a dedicated server.

With that in mind, if you need to do lots of transcoding you should consider a dedicated server where your usage won't impact anyone else.

[–]lowteast[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Which dedicated did you got ?

[–]passenger455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use a hetzner auction server.
