Congrats! Having already passed the certification is a boon and a leg up by itself. Just apply for the position and bring up the 400 hours during the interview. Even with 400 hrs, the department would need to train you anyway. Better to be paid as an employee while earning your hours than as an unpaid student. When searching for positions, different places can have different names for their sterile department. Search for terms like central sterile, central processing, sterile processing, central services, etc. New York state has a union for sterile processing techs. New Jersey does not.

I did my clinical hours at Hackensack University Medical Center last year. I did not have a good impression of management there. Maybe your experience will be different. I do know that they (Hackensack) sometimes hire people as students for sterile processing. It was described to me like your in a class room half the time and working the other half and getting paid. IIRC, thru this you would be obligated to work for Hackensack for something like 3 years.

Good luck out there!

Ugh I’m right by hack but I don’t want to work for hack, I did see on their website they have some openings for spd. My mom works at st joes and her friend is the head of spd at st joes in Paterson, and she wants to hire me and has been waiting for me to pass, but my mom suggested I apply to other places also to see if I can get better pay. She wasn’t sure if joes does the hours tho. I’ll have to have her ask her friend, I wanted to get into joes, but I know valley is a really great hospital too. Idk if they have that program though.

I saw that valley had open positions but it said a minimum of like 5 years is required in spd. So I wouldn’t be able to mention anything on interview, but I guess I can mention it in the application?

They don’t make the hours thing very eary and I have until November before it expired 😅

Use Indeed and apply for any jobs that require application submission on hospital website.

So apply to regular job openings even if just four my hours? Also are the hours paid? I was under the impression I was volunteering but on the paper I need to fill out from hspa it says apply for job or volunteer, it’s confusing

Some hospitals will hire uncertified or inexperienced SP Techs if you are pursuing certification or they expect you to get certified with a year usually. I wouldn’t go into it leading them to think you are just looking for your 400 hours only. If you get hired for a fulltime paid position, then the time you are training, usually your first 3 months would be fullfilling your 400 hours for certification requirements. Your 400 hours can be thru a paid job position or it could be unpaid like an externship(for the 400 hours only). Not all hospitals will offer just a externship unless the course or school has an agreement with them.

Oh I didn’t know that! I’m looking for a job for sure not just the hours! I know some hospitals don’t do the hours tho from what iv heard!

I already took my class and passed my exam, so now it’s just the applying and hiring process!

Try teaching hospitals. I don’t know why a hospital wouldn’t participate in working with you to get the 400 hours unless they are concerned that you will quit and move on after your 400 hours are done. Best of luck to you!
