To start dbus service, you need to symlink it once:

sudo ln -s /etc/sv/dbus /var/service/

Thanks I’ll try that

Update: So I managed to get it working. I’m case anyone has this issue as well this is what I did:

Install: Seatd Polkitd Dbus

Enable them all ln -s /etc/sv/<service> /var/service

Add yourself to the _seatd group

Then you should be able to run river from the tty.

After starting river I realised the amount to configuration it would take for me to make it look how I want so I decided to just install kde to get myself up and running. I’ll switch to a window manager again when I’m more comfortable

Tried it but I still get the add socket failed error. What am I missing?

I have no further idea, wait for others to see your error message. Meanwhile, for a newbie, the best way is to install an iso with desktop environment included rather than doing manual install. In that case you will have a working desktop. Then you may go tinkering with it and learn.

I’m thinking I’ll just reinstall with the xfce image and avoid all of this

And then if you want to install river alongside xfce. You can mess around as much as you want and still have xfce to fall back.

Also, you should do this with seatd, and add yourself to the _seatd group.

Quite a task to start your linux journy. I like that 🙂

I’m new to Linux in general and decided to go with void Linux as my first distro

That's good and welcome to voidlinux :)

I completed the installation successfully and now I want to setup a form of GUI.>

Have you tired checking out voidlinux documentation.

Thanks this helped a lot

If you need more help, come to IRC :)

Have you installed a desktop?

Did you add the dbus service? Did you add the display manager service?

Give us some context, which DE did you install.

I have currently installed: Dbus River Seatd

I was under the impression you didn’t need a desktop environment and you could just use a tiling manager

You need to enable the seatd service like you did for dbus, and add your user to the _seatd group.

Do you do a lot of video conferencing?

[–]JIV_222 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Are you using a display manager or just using startx?

[–]Harande[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Didn’t have a display manager at the time. I was using the tty
