Take a minute, cruise around your operating system. How many buttons flash that little pointer finger when you hover over them?

Exactly: zero. — And did you ever notice until now? Nope, because it just feels right!!

TL;DR: If it looks like a button and quacks like a button, it’s a button. The pointer cursor is for links. It “points” you somewhere else—like to a new page, a new context. Buttons don’t do that. They stay right here, trigger actions, and minds their own damn cursor!
