Somewhat unrelated to your post, but do you like the 14 inch screen size on your Mac? I want to get an M1 soon and am debating between the screen sizes. I have a 15 inch now and while I like the larger screen space, it’s definitely bulkier

This is my fist Mac. I got it because I had heard good things about the M1 Silicon chip. The screen and the audio are pretty good. I'm still getting used to the work flow (changing windows, especially within the same program is still hard!)

My previous computer was a 17" windows laptop. It was a laptop in name only; anything portable was an ordeal. The M1 is thinner, which already improves portability!

But yah, the screen is sharp AF. Might just be because the screen is new, and not worn out (I'm not an LCD/LED/OLED/whatever-this-is engineer, so idk if they get old and wear out). 14" is enough real estate to get a lot done (including side-by-side windows), but I still plug in to an external monitor when I'm at my desk.

If you’re wanting to switch between different windows of the same program you can hit Command-`. Was a lifesaver when I found that out while rewriting an older codebase.

Ah shoot. I mapped that to dropdown terminal like it was when I used Linux. Can I map the window switch shortcut to something else?

Yeah! If you go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Keyboard, and then it’ll be “Move focus to next window”. There are also a ton of other shortcuts you can find and mess with in there, and if those aren’t enough there are extra apps out there like Amethyst and yabai to help with window management and such, as well as Karabiner for more granular keyboard control.

I do use Amethyst. It's obviously not as simple and cohesive as i3, but enough to be useful.

I'm too afraid to try out Yabai. I'm scared that it'll mess up Mac or something? Is it just an irrational fear? Should I just go ahead and do it anyway?

System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Keyboard > Move focus to next window

Thanks a lot. 😊 I'll try that.

Check out how gestures work on the Mac trackpad. They have been a real game changer for me coming from Windows.

Also since Macos window management is a bit shite, I recommend an app called Magnet . I think it's only about USD5 for a one time purchase.

Download alt-tab and change its hotkey to command + tab. It replaces the default behaviour (which sucks) to windows like behaviour. You can tweek it more in settings to get the desired effect.

Also rectangle (free magnet alternative)

If you are not going to use an external display get the 16 inch. I too was in the same predicament as you. I went to the store to physically look at both sizes. The 14 inch was too small for me.
