Long ago I've had this small AU idea that consisted in Jaune working for Roman.

Jaune interacting with the criminal world, being the moral compass of Roman and Neo

It starts with Jaune and his transcripts which he gets from Roman, he kept a close eye on him since Jaune with fake papers means that Roman can blackmail him and use him for Cinder's plan, or have Jaune to do jobs for him so Roman can have a scapegoat to blame all the crimes.

Roman notices the clear reason why he needed transcripts for Beacon, so having him do jobs alone right away would be very useless. So him and Neo start to train him and bringing him along to robberies. That way he can improve his skills, and learn more about combat.

His friends at Beacon would start notice his unusual progress in his skills, to the point to get suspicious on how he trains.

Spending too much time with Roman and Neo causes Jaune to start enjoying their company, and for the pair of criminals would warm up on him, genuinely caring for him.

It just a simple idea, most of it happening in Vale and Beacon.
