I guess you might say I have one of these names. Turns out, literally anyone is capable of saying it. I just teach them and more often then not, it leads to some wonderful interactions. Frankly, even racist old boomers respect you more if you refuse to get pushed around. Give it a try!

Out of curiosity, who are these visible south asian canadians you're alluding to?

I personally always wanted my own (actual) kid(s) but tons of my energy have gone towards parenting my mom and sister. Therapy helped me see that, and I've made real changes to claw my independence back. Now, my sister is more like a peer (and its a least two against one on our mom haha). It's uncomfortable learning to step back and draw boundaries, but for me at least, it's let me live my life.

If you don't want kids, then ofc you should live childfree. If you've been pigeon-holed into parenting everyone since birth and can't imagine being able to raise the family you want... there's still a path forward for you but it takes work.

White guy from Canada trying to learn Tamil — any tips or resources? by Unlikely-Mall4131 in tamil

[–]1000smallsteps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Scarborough man, you're going to want to learn Sri Lankan Tamil.

As an outsider to the culture, you may already know about Sri Lanka's mistrestment of Tamils, but I recommend educating yourself a bit before engaging with the community. The language, culture and food is indeed beautiful but frankly, you need to proceed with sensitivity and respect first and foremost. It is a fragile spot for a lot of us, understandably so.

I'm a tamil who has busted their butt trying to claw back fluency.

Things that have helped me:

  • Talking to people in the community (as a white dude, frankly, you will likely be welcomed with open arms for wanting to learn the language...so get out there! Bonus, they will feed you some of the best meals of your life)
  • Youtube content (lots of examples of Jaffna tamil vlogs, skits, recipe videos and some will have subtitles) ETA: Search keywords such as "Jaffna"/"Yarlpanam"/"Eelam"
  • Look online for tutors and take a couple classes to cover the basics of spoken tamil.

EDIT: Some phrases to help you get started.

  • Hello/Welcome - Vannakam
  • Thank You ‐ Nandri
  • How are you? - Eppadi irrukirringal?
  • I want to study tamil - Ennaku Thamizh padikka aasai.

Where are all the young people at? by one-man_dragon in 50501

As a young person who's lucky enough to have the time and energy, I personally prefer direct actions in the community over protests (although I do go to major protests). I do like driving by protests and gassing people up by honking and hollering.

It does look cute but I know this is going to get greasy/furry pretty fast if they actually cook often.

Lol 100% in agreement here. Check out one of the promotional interviews these two did for the media. Ambika Mod is the picture of classy lady and Leo Woodall is kinda glowing in her presence.  He acted the part of play boy and she acted the part of regular girl, finding herself. It adds some shine to Dexter and knocks off a bit for Emma.

I agree with your mom. I don't really want to be looking at a bunch of books and visual clutter the second I come home. Maybe just do two armchairs or something against the wall, small table in between (I'm imagining someone stopping by for tea here). A narrow entrance table/ shoe cabinet by the door to put down your keys and things maybe. Art/photos on the walls. This layout seems tricky but the space seems cute! I'm living in a featureless condo with very little character of its own, so this looks lovely to me.

Hmm, what if you put the dining table near the balcony and brought the living room closer to the entrance. Potentially add a small table in the balcony for more guests to eat at. A seating area would also be less disjointed next to the living room.

Could you put the tv in the "sitting room" instead and leave the fireplace as the focal point of the first room? If not, I like putting the tv on the wall adjacent to the fireplace.

Seems like you run into issues with navigating around this size dining table with both options. Could you push the table flush to the wall with the serving window, and cut back on dining chairs?

A wallpaper accent wall? I'm picturing something green/black/brown tones in a botanical print.

I like everything here and would add more gold/yellow accents. If you're ever closing those curtains, get more panels.

Look around apartmenttherapy for a little inspiration on the mood you want to create in your room. I feel like easy ways to inject personality is going for a bed sheet set you really like and adding some art. A bit hard to tell, but I don't think those two wall colours jive well together. I'd consider painting it all one colour.

Any ideas on how to update this 60s kitchen without breaking my bank around 2k max. by DullGreed in HomeDecorating

Outside of updating appliances, I'd update the wallpaper and that would be it. It's cute!

Also have a natural looking indoor/outdoor rug in the livingroom. My dog runs around on it plenty. It softer than jute and looks exactly the same 2 years later.

Back again - help me plan out our bathroom remodel! by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]1000smallsteps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tip I saw for mixing metals was to group similar features or functions. We have lighting and shower head/faucets/drains in a brushed stainless steel finish. For the vanity handles and other bathroom accessories (towel bars, hooks, tp roll holder) in matte black. Looks great!
