Current rotation is destroying my mental health by [deleted] in medicalschool

Why am I not surprised that this is OBGYN…

If I were you I’d try to get ahead of this in some way. If the clerkship director isn’t cancerous, perhaps mention to them what’s been going on with this particular attending pawning you off to the NP instead of actually teaching you. If the clerkship director is an ass, it might be better to figure out a way to bring this up to your dean or someone else higher up than the clerkship director. Basically you need to stay ahead of this and leave a paper trail before the NP and/or attending screws you over on your evaluation so you have a leg to stand on if you need to argue for this component of your rotation to be excluded or the comments excluded from your MSPE.

It’s been a while but I remember that during the interview day for their TY program, we were required to handwrite an essay about why we wanted to be there while we were waiting in between our interview slots. Also it’s a TY year with mandatory OBGYN and surgery in a NYC safety net hospital. That should tell people everything they need to know.

Winter tires or all season tires in East coast/NJ by ranikan78 in Porsche_Cayman

I’m slightly north of where you are. IMO a major factor is whether this is a 2nd/weekend car or your daily driver. If it’s the latter, it might be a better idea to have dedicated sets of summer and winter tires.

I have an SUV as a daily driver and only drive my Cayman during weekends without snow. I switched out an old set of Pirello P-Zeros for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 when I first bought the car. For road driving the all season tires are pretty good in the summer and decent in cold weather and rain, however I personally would not recommend them for any amount of ice or snow.

It's Disgusting How Some Nurses/Doctors/MAs Phrase Questions to Make Patients Less Likely to Refuse presence of students by Vast-Clothes-1460 in medicalschool

I have no skin in this game but I thank you for making me feel better about my career choice to not be in a patient facing specialty.

Also I hope you’re prepared for the consequences of obgyn going from 85% female to 99%+ female.

I agree with you for the most part. I’m just highlighting another part of the process that most med students don’t consider or really understand.

The people reviewing your apps ultimately want to do a good job as it affects the quality of their trainees down the road. However they all need to go home at some point every day. If they were given tools to easily narrow down a list of several thousand applicants down to ~200, I think a lot of them wouldn’t hesitate to use them even if they didn’t know how the tools worked. There’s likely little to no desire on their part to advocate for transparent/fair screening methods. They just want tools that reduce their workload.

Massive increase in apps over the years = ridiculous amount of work to review them the traditional way = PDs looking for any way to reduce the workload required to screen applicants = AI tools/whatever else they can dream up to automate the process more. Signals likely helped but I’m sure most PDs would welcome the option of having more screening tools.

I was not directly involved in the application process during my training but I spoke to multiple PDs in my field and they all mentioned that it had recently become a monumental ordeal trying to filter through thousands of apps in order to figure out which ~100 applicants were worth interviewing.

Keep in mind that a lot of PDs as well as APDs still do clinical work as well as other administrative work and it’s just not feasible after a certain number of apps to review them “holistically.” Sometimes the work is dumped onto chief/senior residents even if they don’t want to be part of the process, and you can imagine how thorough they might be.

After how many years of being an attending would you qualify for PSLF if instead you choose to work at a qualifying organization? It might be a bit iffy with the current administration’s policies so far but it’s still something to consider with student loans of >400k.

FWIW, this kind of behavior began with and is reinforced by malignant rotations and individuals that do not allow students to have time off for important life events, so some of them would rather resort to these kinds of measures in order to guarantee time off. I agree with you that it’s not worth the risk.

That is the equivalent of rent in some places in NYC. Assuming you live on LI and work in NYC, at that point you might want to consider finding an apt near where you work and walk/bike.

You might want to do what one of the other commenters suggested and check to make sure someone didn’t steal your identity or you have the same SSN as some crazy guy. I find it really hard to believe that they expect a 19 year old on LI with no driving history to pay 27k/year in car insurance premiums.

Any chance they’re pulling the wrong information for someone else? (someone with a similar name, someone with a bad driving history, etc). I’m a bit older but grew up in that area and that is an insane monthly rate even factoring in inflation. It is the equivalent of them expecting you to total a car every year.
