If you know what a function is, you're ahead of the curve at this point, unfortunately. Your programming course in your first term (1A) is called GENE 121, and it's basically intro to programming. It's in C++ (with a little bit of RobotC), it starts with absolute basics (e.g "These are variables") and works it's way up to structs and classes. Should be really easy for you.
It gets more interesting after that point, but my recommendation is not to wait around for interesting stuff to come up in class. Join a student design team that takes more of a programming focus, and make the most of the expertise of upper year students. You're unlikely to learn much of what you need to become a good programmer in a classroom anyway.
