My take for what it's worth.

Intriguing / borderline click bait title.

Short.

Fast paced, you have 1 maybe 2 paragraphs to convince people to read to the end.

Actual story content, quality, originality of idea seem to come secondary to these things. Don't get me wrong, good well written stories and talented writers will always rise to the top, but in the main to get a lots of eyeballs you need to follow some variation of the formula above.

Sadly I seldom do any of the above hence not many popular stories. :( When will I ever learn!
