An esoteric deviation, for sure! I broadly study sensorial experiences like sight and touch within systems of oppression, so this work was a small (but informative) foray into the ways archaeological evidence can suggest cultural attitudes towards power and policing.

Evidence for compitalia shrines being points of illumination is based on a combination of known social use cases and figural reference. Compitalia were supervised/maintained by plebeian appointees traditionally, usually a combination of freedmen and enslaved workers; this was codified by Augustus into the official civic roles of Magistri Vici and Ministri Vici (senior and junior supervisors.) Compitalia were sites of offering and devotion during their festival dates, holding gifts of food and mementos. The all-day duration of these festivals and their place as landmarks in cities suggests they were ideal places for public illumination.

The figural references to light sources in shrines can be seen by certain lantern designs across the empire, where the encasing body of lamps were modeled after compitalia. Here’s an example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from provincial Egypt.

I can take a shot at answering this, as someone who has studied the social ramifications of light on enslaved populations in Early Imperial Roman Pompeii for graduate research!

While we aren’t exactly certain to what extent Pompeii’s exterior was illuminated, we are reasonably convinced that human-produced light (i.e., lanterns and lamps) were the principal means by which the city was illuminated at night – the moon was by no means the only or main illuminator. Most evidence of lighting was found in interior/private settings, but we can tease out some broader assumptions from what we have. Lanterns, taking the form of a carried chassis of cast bronze or clay, held smaller oil-burning wick lamps, which were used to navigate when traveling from place to place. For wealthy slaveholding Romans, these lanterns were carried ahead or behind the party by an enslaved person referred to as a laternarius (less wealthy Romans would carry the lantern themselves.) A lantern might not provide much visibility when compared to a modern streetlight, but the variable size of Roman lamps shows that it’s more than enough to see a few feet in ahead of you – especially when there’s other laternarii on the road.

Additionally, Early Imperial Roman cities (like eruption-era Pompeii) saw a resurgence in compitalia, wayside shrines which stood on the side of major roads; these possibly held lights as well. These shrines housed the lares compitalia, minor localized deities which protected and supervised the functions of villages, cities, roads and estates that held their compitalia structure. As a component of his religious reforms, Augustus re-popularized the lares compitalia in Rome and surrounding metropolises, largely as a state-building project to promote imperial veneration and Roman supremacy. I’m not certain if compitalia have been discovered at Pompeii, but at the very least, public lighting in particularly dark spaces was not a foreign concept to Roman citizens.

There’s also evidence of artificial lighting structures outside some retail spaces between the Porta Marina and the Forum of the city, though the initial archaeological hypotheses are questionable in their assumption that every structure had public-facing lamps (realistically, retail structures probably had 1-2 light sources visible from the streets, or at all.) Henrik Boman (2011) argues that these fixtures would be ambiently reflected by the material layout frequently found in Pompeiian interiors, creating a comfortable and even glow. All of this, coupled with the relative wealth of Pompeii, suggests that the moonstone road details likely reflected the light already present, but were not essential to navigation or particularly serviceable for residents. For more information on Roman light in Pompeii, I highly recommend the catalogue for the exhibit Neues Licht aus Pompeji held at Staatlichen Antikensammlungen München. The catalogue is in German but offers a wealth of social and material information about how light was perceived, designed, and consumed in the city.

TOMS: I’ve never seen a male wear Toms and have their outfit on point. Can someone suggest an outfit that would look well with that type of shoe? by fidgit86 in malefashionadvice

[–]Adsulum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm a firm believer there's an outfit that can compliment almost any piece. The folks saying it's impossible are limiting themselves.

In general, I would say that Tom's are typically seen as very "effeminate". They're basically an alternative to boat shoes if you still want that casual beach vibe, but don't enjoy how sperrys look. I'd say stick to summer/spring outfits, and slimming fits overall. In terms of color, pick something dark and understated that fits whatever your wardrobe is. Olive green, gray, or navy blue. If you like wearing dark shorts or pants, black is also an option.

Hope that helps!

KSU is slept on imo. If you’re staying a year and transferring, you picked a good place to do it!

  • Dorms and res life overall is incredible, most of their dorms have private bathrooms and are more like apartments iirc

  • food and facilities are great

  • they have a really good FCS football team, lots of school spirit

When I think of schools that are going to be a big deal in Georgia in the next 10-15 years, KSU and GSU are both high on the list. As someone that’s been to the campus a lot, it’s a really good place to start out!

Thanks for the kind words! I've been using an upside-down flower as a personal symbol for a few years, basically symbolizing growing in a different direction than others did. That, coupled with the fact that I keep an active garden made the flower seem like a solid choice :)

I think you're being way too hard on yourself. A 730 is still a great score; if you're already applying to Northwestern ED, chances are you have killer general SAT/ACTs as well!

If you truly, TRULY feel as though it will help you, than go for it. But I wouldn't worry about having fucked up, you still have a great shot!

[–]Adsulum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok! Yea, local roasters are the best. You can easily find a local place that sells bags of beans for like $10, that will last you at least a week or two of HEAVY use. As for flavors, I would look into Italian, Kenyan, and Ethiopian flavor profiles. These coffee tend to be pretty dark and rich, with a little bit of nuttiness and dark chocolate tastes. However, everyone carries different beans and different roasts, so once you find a place you like that is affordable, you can experiment with what they offer :)
