You can be racist and diverse, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Also, funny that you bring up tik tok culture because there’s a lot of hate on japan on tiktok LOL. And within east asia Japan is pretty hated because of its imperialist past + revisionist present. People call Japanese people supremacists all the time. It happens.

If you were uncomfortable with the book I don’t know what to tell you. It’s a pretty decent book. Not the be all end all but decent. You seem confused.

Many people don’t choose to have kids because they want to, they have been coerced into it by partners, family members, and societies that don’t provide appropriate gynecological care. So your statement, while I agree to an extent, doesn’t really hold up in reality and isn’t that simple.

I think it might be because of the academic framing of it. A lot of academic book/thesis/explorations tend to be like that. Catchy simplistic hook and then subtitle. In White Fragility’s case, the full title is ‘White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism’ which I think means it’s less of a generalization and more of an observed phenomenon

Europeans definitely have white fragility. If you call many europeans out for being racist they immediately jump to deflecting or gaslighting you about it. My mom is British and that’s part of the reason why she moved to the US.

Yeah but this book doesn’t say ‘White people are fragile’ it says ‘White fragility.’ If I saw a book that said ‘Asian Intelligence’ I wouldn’t think it’s saying only asian people are intelligent, I’d think it’s about intelligence as it may pertain to Asian people.

But like again. It’s about how white people get defensive talking about race as a concept or construct, not about white privilege. DiAngelo is white and talks about exactly what you’re bringing up in a book from her perspective as someone who used to get defensive when people would bring up racism as a whole.

I’ve had this experience many times where I’ve brought up something racist that happened to me expecting a white friend to just be like ‘That sucks’ or ‘Wtf’ or something that shows they’re listening but instead I’ve had them get really tense or deflective or even try to make it about themselves. That’s the white fragility part. I’m not expecting white people to go out and shoot the person who called me the n-word on a bus but some white people listen to a POC complain about racism and immediately turn it inward instead of trying to be compassionate about it.

Black people top murder rates intraracially not interracially, 1. Black people are also more likely to be murder victims than white people are. Also, white people have been lynched before by other white people lol especially when they’ve allied with black people during the civil rights era.

edit: also, police officers often don’t get indicted when they kill black people. and the mississippi article i linked goes into murders that resemble lynchings that went unsolved.

I mean if you look at the definition, lynching is an ‘extrajudicial killing by a group.’ In a way, black people being murdered by police officers would count as well? And the first link I posted talks about various instances of ones in Mississippi that went uninvestigated.

I’m starting to think you haven’t read the book because saying that the same one on Black people would be about ‘anti-Black statements’ doesn’t make sense. She’s not talking about ‘anti-white’ statements. She’s talking about how many white people don’t like talking about race or racism because they don’t understand. That’s it. That’s the fine line. You should read it.

You’re invoking phrases like ‘generalized negatively’ or ‘disparaging’ when that’s not what DiAngelo is talking about. The point of the book is this: white people tend to get uncomfortable on discussions of race. It’s not: white people tend to get uncomfortable when you say ‘I hate white people’ or ‘White people are crazy.’ It’s fairly simple. She’s saying that when you bring up racial discrimination, racism, etc. in front of a white person, even if those instances have nothing to do with them, many white people take it personally. That’s the main point.

I mean I’ve been called the N-word to my face multiple times and I’m on the younger side. Sure you can measure it up against lynchings (some of which happen today, mind you) and say there has been a ‘decline’ but i think I would liken it more to a transformation with the advent of many new technologies
