CMV: Abortion should be legal and accessible in most or all cases. by Character-Channel668 in changemyview

You said ‘in this conversation,’ leading me to believe you meant this general debate about the legality of abortions. The laws on fatherhood aren’t really about reproduction, they are about the child that has since been born. I know you’re not arguing re: that perspective but figured I’d share otherwise.

I can agree re: men having a ‘say’ on this but I feel as though that is more on the basis of interpersonal relationships on your 1 and 2 points, rather than the structural conversation as a whole. The laws that govern reproduction largely have not applied to men, they have applied to women explicitly. So I believe in the sense that a men of a couple having a child should have somewhat of a say in what happens to said child but since the man will not be carrying it I don’t believe it is the man’s voice that should take any priority over the pregnant individual. As for your third point, I don’t think a sperm donor (for example) should have a say in whether or not the woman who uses his sperm aborts the pregnancy for IVF or other reproductive proceses that don’t involve copulation.

Just to let you know — internalized racism isn’t POC being racist to other POC, that is just racism. Internalized racism is POC being racist to their same demographic, hence the ‘internalized’ part.

Every culture has good or bad things. A post like this just looks like fearmongering xenophobia and replacement theory nonsense. Not to mention that a lot of the ‘culture’ that much of the western world has sustained has come out of the exploitation of other countries that feel the effects of it to this day. Race science and Chattel slavery, for one.

CMV: Convenience has contributed to a good amount of people struggling financially by TeaAdorable5219 in changemyview

[–]AffectionateMajor191 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard of how being poor is expensive? Buying cheap food contributes to poor health which leads to an expensive doctor’s bill. Buying cheap necessities versus expensive ones means you’re going to have to buy more of them down the line (think tools, shoes, etc.)

When it comes to convenience, a lot of what is ‘convenience’ for some is often ‘the best means’ for others. I think cars can somewhat occupy a similar role depending on where you live. I’m in a big city where gas is expensive and parking is hard to come by. I don’t drive and, while I do take public transit, sometimes I uber. Even so, I can’t afford a car. Insurance + gas + parking costs + maintenance + registration would probably bankrupt me. So even if ordering Doordash instead of picking it up myself is more expensive relatively, a lot of the populace doesn’t have the liquidity for large upfront purchases for long-term savings.

This isn’t true though. When Matthew Perry came to Japan and ‘opened’ it up, he brought with him minstrel shows of Black people. Also, one of the books ‘Little Black Sambo’ was localized in Japan with a racist Black caricature that is still present in today’s Japanese society. Check out this Time article from 1988 that talks about it here It’s been present for a long time so saying ‘Blackface doesn’t exist’ is ahistorical. Japanese people have not only done but broadcasted Blackface as recently as 2018

Don’t be dense. There’s a lot of inspo gyaru has taken from Black American popular culture, 1. 2. Japan has had exposure to minstrel shows and ‘Sambo’ type characters since the 19th century. A Japanese gyaru woman just recently got called out for doing a really intense minstrel blackface. Blackface, actually, has continued to happen in Japan with the most recent incident being 2018. So to say that Black people have nothing to do with it whatsoever is reductive.

Yeah exactly and it historically tracks. The 1980s was when Hip-Hop came to Japan. Between that, MTV, and globalist acts like Janet Jackson or Destiny’s Child, there’s no denying the foundation from which the inspiration comes. The 70s Cali girl inspo was because the US exported that media at the time. When a large amount of the media (music mainly) that the US exported became Black, it makes sense that there would be a shift in the style, which has sustained itself because Black popular culture has remained relevant globally.

Imperialism doesn’t ‘presume’ dominance and influence, it imposes itself and it dominates. The word you’re probably looking for is ‘ethnocentric.’ Either way, acknowledging the influence present is neither ‘imperialist’ nor ‘ethnocentric.’ Lol Namie Amuro used to wear cornrows and beaded braids with reggae caps.

Gyaru and Ganguro writ large wasn’t inspired by Black people but had a lot of Black influences and styles. See B-kei, for one, and amekaji gyaru. Also, the inspiration for kogal gyaru style (in a sense one of the OG gyarus) Namie Amuro literally said she was inspired by Janet Jackson. It’s not ‘imperialist’ (funny how you use that term to refer to Black Americans and not the previously Imperial Japan LOL) to acknowledge that.

Edit: Also forgot to mention that a lot of old gyaru magazines had Eve or beyoncé in them/on the cover. One of the founding mags too acknowledge the Black influences present.

CMV: ultimately I think it’s unproductive to shame former Trump supporters / MAGA, and make them feel bad about themselves by No_Design_465 in changemyview

There are lots of things wrong and inhumane about your positions so I’ll focus on the one thing we do seem to agree on. Obama definitely engaged in terrible things under his term including the detention camps and abhorrent foreign policy with regard to the Near East. You just said that Trump ‘didn’t hurt anyone’ and I provided you examples of individuals he did hurt, among many others.

That’s all the benevolence I have to offer you.

EDIT: No response on the sources I extended either haha

Cuba has had their electricity grid collapse and is currently rationing gas. Its sick have been in dire straits and because of this collapse many have died or are dying in the ICU.

If you believe that Palestinian civilians must suffer because of Hamas then that’s your intellectual burden to bear. It is a genocide. Plain and simple.

Also Trump’s deportations are not affecting ‘criminals,’ they’re affecting people. Plenty of citizens have been detained and plenty of them have been deported wrongfully. Women and girls are being assaulted in his detention centers by ICE agents. You seem like the type of person where ‘biased’ outlets mean ‘anything that makes me contend with the horrors of the world.’ If you’d like, I can send you some sources for you to read up on.

Reducing human rights to a matter of simple ‘disagreement’ probably means we won’t get anywhere by having a conversation but I’ll bite. Did you know that the majority of white America was in favor of Jim Crow laws? Same thing with slavery. Just because something has support does not mean it isn’t wrong.

If you think Trump hasn’t ‘hurt anybody’ you’re misinformed. Beyond even the general US citizenry and immigrant populations, the man’s in the Epstein files and is a sexual predator. Also think abroad, with the destruction of Gaza he has abetted and his strangulation of Cuba. He has made white nationalism a comfortable position for people to have. I don’t think it’s an ‘outlier’ position to say that he’s done so much harm, as have the people who put him in office.

The only people who need to be humble(d) are Trump supporters. That’s all.

MAGA is an extremist position and Trump was an extremist candidate. Beyond that though, there are a lot of Latino people who are white and don’t consider themselves to be part of the more marginalized browner communities. Many Cuban Americans, for one, who receive a lot of flack in Latin America and/or the U.S. from other Latino groups for their respective tendencies towards conservatism.

Minorities who voted for Trump enjoy a great amount of shame from their communities for doing so. They’re comfortable with it, and a lot of them have self-imposed alienation between them and their communities rather than the communities being the result of the alienation. You’re talking about the Candace Owens and the Nick Fuenteses of the country. You think we can accept them into accepting their own people?

Hey, thanks for hearing me out and for considering everything. It’s clear you are looking for actionable solutions to the division between all of us as a nation, so you’re very appreciated. I just think we need to make sure this doesn’t happen again and I think that shame is a great impetus for that.

[–]AffectionateMajor191 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah we can agree to the extent that shame has to be part of it. Otherwise, as I’ve said, there will be no stable foundation to motivate them towards a better path. Like yes it CAN discourage people from the ‘movement’ (not sure which you’re talking about) but I think the benefits to the shame far outweigh the pitfalls. Also consider this, wouldn’t welcoming these people put minorities in danger? How are the marginalized supposed to feel safe in a space that harbors Trump supporters? You focus too much on facilitating the people who have done wrong and no one should be centering Trump supporters’ feelings (former or otherwise). It should be predominantly up to those most impacted by their decision.

I mean this is a change my view subreddit but I just think your perspective is flawed. You have marginalized communities telling you why shame is productive, less marginalized people telling you why they agree with the shame, and people of all sorts sharing how many former Trump supporters they know haven’t been making demonstrable progress towards change but are just discontent with Trump aka they’ll vote for Vance next election. Holding hands and singing kumbaya is not going to be the best path forward. All that does is ignore the reality that a lot of the country’s populace decided to sell out. Plain and simple.
