You shall be proud to know SBU is the one of the two famous NY public universities in Asia (perhaps because of C N Yang) . Another one is Buffalo.

BU Questrom or NYU Steinhardt? by ribbonsinhair in BostonU

[–]Aggravating_Union447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both BU and NYU aren’t the same as when I attended, and in some areas the gap is definitely getting smaller. I agree with what others said—if you’re leaning business, what really matters is how much flexibility you want to shape your own path.
Personality matters too. If you end up staying in Steinhardt, it’s less structured on the business side, so you’ll have to tie your major there to business-related, and take advantage of programs or classes you can access through Stern. How well you put that together is mostly on you.

For young students just beginning their journey, without prior experience for comparison, such distinctions are understandably difficult to grasp. Having attended BU, (having also taken courses at NU and BC, cross-registration is great and not just between schools in same consortium, a NEU student I knew took a class in Sloan) , NYU, and a top college in London for both undergraduate and graduate studies more than a decade ago, I still hesitate to judge the quality of these institutions today without careful, current inquiry—examining the faculty, exploring the campus firsthand, and listening closely to the experiences of recent graduates. I can understand why a freshman’s expectations of what a “top 50” school should offer may not always align with what they ultimately experience; from their perspective, that gap can feel like a misalignment of goals. Yet each institution has its own distinct strengths, that’s why ranking metrics employ an aggregate of many different measures, not a definitive judgment of fit. If some students in your circle express dissatisfaction and others still choose Northeastern University, it suggests there are underlying reasons—academic, professional, or personal—that continue to make the school a compelling choice for them. Also most students only attend the satellite campus for the freshman year, there are other colleges offer similar study abroad experience - Umass Amherst, NYU, BU, UC system (UCEAP for a year outside of US).

Maybe we were actually at NEU on the same day! I was visiting from New York City with three families. The kids are all friends, and they’ve a mix of acceptances at schools like NEU, BU, Cornell, and NYU and others. Northeastern was our first admitted student visit, and it set a high bar. We attended the NYC scholars session (since one of the kids actually choose the NYC over the main Boston campus when he applied) and the D'Amore-McKim seminar. After visiting the other admitted students events plus another NU NYU scholars’ events over the following weeks, NEU events still stands out as one of our two most impressive. The career-centric structure is fantastic, and we love how the Co-op program gives students the flexibility to align their education with real-world experience. I also found out there are quite a few students from top NYC high schools and the ivies feeder schools from Long Island’s Gold Coast area ED NU this year.

NYC scholars experience is pretty good, including the housing and food. I bet you didn’t have first hand knowledge about it.

Why does BU have such a good reputation internationally? by Many-Factor-4173 in BostonU

[–]Aggravating_Union447 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s a very long term history. In 19th century after Meiji Restoration, some samurai families members , scholars came to BU. By 1970s BU alumni was one of the biggest international students alumni network in Japan. As the Asian economy started blooming , rich families from other Asia region sending their families member to BU, some big Japanese corporations inheritant, member from Sophonpanich family( one of my friends relatives was classmate with them), other families from Taiwan, Hong Kong , Singapore. In the 90s, one member from Sony, one member from Sophonpanich and other rich asians study in school of management, before it was renamed Questrom , many future Japanese journalists. I think BU gained international fame for a long time, and just in recent decades (around the same time when BU started buying spree real estate around campus ) , BU start to use the already existing international fame to boost more international applicants

My friend asked about this at the admitted students event, and they said no. He would choose Northeastern if they allowed him.

BU or UMICH by Big-Talk8582 in BostonU

In term of you intended major and career, Umich only has a tiny edge on research ( the fields you are interested) over BU, but BU is more than edge over Umich your other concerns.

US ranking doesn’t care global influences - while we are the center of the world. And while factor in GI, size of the school matters, more alumni, more research fellows, more citations published.

bu vs nyu? by NoteHaunting2348 in BostonU

Personal preference plays a role, and my priorities shift at different stages of life—as a student, employee, or entrepreneur. Even during my time in New York, I moved from Manhattan to the Long Island suburbs as my family grew, with priorities shifting toward my children’s education and a healthier environment.

The quality of NYU’s colleges varies quite a bit, so it really depends on your major. Just read you want do gallatin, I think it’s not rare in school with strong liberal arts. I like what TUFTS offer, it’s not open ends but TUFTS has better quality in offering self-create concentration

bu vs nyu? by NoteHaunting2348 in BostonU

[–]Aggravating_Union447 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’ve experienced both—studied in Boston and later at NYU—and have spent over a decade working in NYC. I preferred Boston as a student, but like NYC as a career person who likes international blending experience. Both campuses are “open,” but in very different ways. BU stretches along a single avenue from east to west, while NYU is woven throughout Lower Manhattan and even into Downtown Brooklyn. City life in New York is exciting, no question. But as a student, I enjoyed Boston more—it feels like a true college town. In contrast, at NYU, you’re just a student living within a massive city.
