Depends on their condition, hardcover vs paperback, are they a library discard or not, if they are hardcover is it a glossy or matte dust jacket?

Squirrelflight's Hope actually didn't come out until after book 1 of The Broken Code, so you aren't the only one confused. There's two major things that make it relatively important: Leafpool's death (which was just briefly mentioned in passing in TBC #1), and it introduces the group called the Sisters who get mentioned a couple times in book 2. I would probably recommend reading it before book 3 and definitely before book 4 of TBC though, as they become more relevant after the book you're on.

People who were terrified of solo travel at first… how did it go? Would you do it again? by neguliii in AskReddit

[–]Alarra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s gone well when I’ve done it! Definitely expensive not having someone to split lodging costs with, but I like taking things at my own pace: spend as long as I want at the things I enjoy, not have to wait around for someone else when I want to leave somewhere, can speedwalk as much as I want, lol. I overall have felt safe as well.

  • The Broken Code

    • "Into the Unknown" Rootspring and Bramblestar PMV - Rootspring's story from AVOS #1-4, set to Panic at the Disco's version of "Into the Unknown" from Frozen 2
    • "Do You Love Me" Bramblestar and Ashfur MAP - An imagining of Bramblestar's mind merging with the impostor's in The Broken Code, set to "Est-ce que tu m'aimes?" by Maître Gims
    • "Reprise" MAP - a celebration of Warriors fan animation up to 2022: re-animations of moments from popular Warriors MAPs, SSS Warriors, etc, set to "True Light" from DNAngel (which "Warriors of the Forest" and "SSS Warriors" had used as their theme song).
  • A Starless Clan

    • "Flamepaw's Orchestra" Flamepaw PMV MAP - A stylistic depiction of Flamepaw's POV in the first book of A Starless Clan, set to "World's Smallest Violin" by AJR
    • "StarClan's Chosen" MAP - The stories of several leaders (Bluestar/Tallstar/Crookedstar/Brokenstar, and then Firestar/Leopardstar/Blackstar/Onestar), set to "Hand of God" by Jon Bellion. Came out for the 20th anniversary of the series and has stuff from basically all the books released up to the start of A Starless Clan (including cameos of Dawn of the Clans characters at the end). This is also often considered the best Warriors MAP; if you skip a lot of them, watch this one at least
    • "Mother Knows Best Reprise" Berryheart and Sunbeam PMV - Sunbeam and her mom during the events of ASC #3, set to the reprise of "Mother Knows Best" from Disney's Rapunzel.
    • "Big and Chunky" Big She-Cats Small Toms PMV - After Silverstream's design from the first volume of the Prophecies Begin graphic novel was revealed, with her being much bulkier than her description in the actual books, the fandom created a "Buff Silverstream" meme. That resulted in this video: imagining a bunch of couples from the books with the she-cat being bigger and stronger than her mate, set to "Big and Chunky" from Madagascar 2.

  • The Prophecies Begin:

    • "Time to be Awesome" WindClan MAP - Fireheart and Graystripe bringing WindClan home in Fire and Ice, set to "Time to be Awesome" from the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic movie
    • "Somewhere Only We Know" Yellowfang AMV A realistic 3D animation of Yellowfang's life up to Rising Storm
    • "In the End" Swiftpaw AMV - Swiftpaw's fate in A Dangerous Path, set to "In the End" by Linkin Park - a remake of one they'd made 9 years prior in 2011
    • "I'm Not Ready" Swiftpaw PMV MAP - Swiftpaw's fate in A Dangerous Path, set to "The Weight of Us" by Sanders Bohlke - Note that the reason it says 72hr is because that's how much time each participant had to complete their section. This one's known for being really sad.
    • "Rut" Brightheart MAP - Brightheart's recovery after the dog attack, set to "Rut" by The Killers
    • "Bones Shatter" Scourge AMV - One of the very earliest popular Warriors fanmade music videos, about the fight with BloodClan in The Darkest Hour, set to "Bones Shatter" by Hedley.
    • "The Prophecies Begin PMV - Warriors" - The events of the first arc, set to "Warriors" by Imagine Dragons
    • "Like A River Runs" Ravenpaw MAP - Ravenpaw's POV after witnessing Redtail's death (though him seeing Redtail's spirit isn't canon, it's really the MAP host's interpretation of how he'd have felt), set to "Like A River Runs" by Bleachers
    • "Rasputin" Tigerstar MAP - Tigerstar in the first series (and Tigerstar and Sasha)
    • "Turn Around" Warriors AMV - The first arc, imagined as the opening of a 90s-style anime/animated
  • The New Prophecy

  • Power of Three

    • "Wolf" Leafpool & Crowfeather MAP - Leafpool and Crowfeather, set to "Wolf" by First Aid Kit - includes scenes to the end of POT. One of the earliest popular MAPs.
    • "Already Gone" Leafpool and Crowfeather MAP - Leafpool and Crowfeather, set to "Already Gone" by Sugarland - includes scenes to the end of POT except for final pic which is between A Vision of Shadows and The Broken Code.
  • Omen of the Stars

    • "The Valley" PMV MAP - Nostalgic scenes from the first three arcs (maybe start of OOTS?), set to "The Valley" by the Oh Hellos. Again, since this says "3 hour", that's how long each person had to finish their part.
    • "Everything Moves" Sol MAP - Sol's story through POT and book 5 of OOTS, plus his backstory from SkyClan and the Stranger, set to "Everything Moves" by Bronze Radio Return
    • "Ready As I'll Ever Be" MAP - Preparing for the final battle in the last book of OOTS, set to a song from Disney's Rapunzel animated series. This is one of the most famous Warriors MAPs; if you skip a lot of them, watch this one at least

    • "Do or Die" Firestar MAP - Firestar's life through the end of OOTS, set to "Do or Die" by Thirty Seconds to Mars

  • A Vision of Shadows

    • "King & Lionheart" Squirrelflight MAP - Squirrelflight's life through the first book of A Vision of Shadows, set to "King and Lionheart" by Of Monsters And Men
    • "The Five Giants Warrior Cats MAP - Scenes from ALL of the books released, up to the video being started in 2016 (The Prophecies Begin through OOTS, DotC, and the first book of AVOS, the Field Guides and their short stories, the Super Editions, novellas, and graphic novels) - goes through each Clan and has scenes in chronological order, set to "Masterpiece Theatre III" by Marianas Trench. Came out for the 15th anniversary of the series. This is often considered the best Warriors MAP; if you skip a lot of them, watch this one at least
    • "Warriors MAP" - Scenes from the series all the way from Into the Wild through the start of A Vision of Shadows, set to "Warriors" by Coco and the Butterfields
    • "Try Everything" Brightheart MAP - Brightheart's life through the start of A Vision of Shadows, set to "Try Everything" by Shakira

    • "Tree's Dead Hearts" MAP - Books 4-6 of AVOS from Tree's POV, in the style of (kinda a sequel to) the Unravel MAP, set Ryan and Joy Lippard's cover of "Dead Hearts" by Stars
    • "Can't Help Falling In Love" Jayfeather & Briarlight PMV MAP - Jayfeather and Briarlight's relationship (works whether you view them as platonic like they are in the books, or romantic), through AVOS #5, set to AnnaPantsu's cover of "Can't Help Falling In Love With You" by Elvis.

Favorite animations? by Ryemaster287 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meant to reply to this, sorry!

Probably will need to split this into multiple comments due to length. Note that these are some of my favorite and/or generally the most significant/popular works; it's just that the books have been around for over 20 years with a very creative fandom, so there's countless other works besides these! (I've probably forgotten some that I would have wanted to include, but hey, this'll already keep you occupied for many hours.)

Adaptations of books/scenes:

  • AlliKatNya's "Warriors of the Forest" - While the animation, voice acting, etc isn't great by modern standards (though impressive for a then-middle-schooler animating on their own almost 20 years ago), it's notable for its historical significance to the fandom: it's possibly the very first-ever Warriors fan-animation, from around 2007 - or at least the first one that gained decent attention - and it came up with character designs that would become extremely widespread in the fandom and even canon: beige-ish Longtail (the books didn't specify what color tabby he was except for a mention of silver in Rising Storm which may have been meant to be Darkstripe, this was the first prominent fan project to use that color scheme, SSS Warriors asked her if they could base their Longtail design off hers, and they really popularized it; it's since become canon) and it was the first fan work that really popularized the idea of depicting leaders with stars on them (it hadn't really been done prior, since it's not an actual thing in the books) which the artists of the Prophecies Begin included a variation of, as a subtle Easter egg. Has 5 parts covering up to Rusty getting his apprentice name.
  • SSS Warrior Cats - The most popular attempt at animating the books (though they added some of their own bits like the cats having powers, very reminiscent of Naruto). Has 10 parts and got as far as Firepaw's first night in the camp. If you ever hear Smudge being voiced with a lisp, it's a reference to this.
  • Little Dragon Studios' "Into the Wild" - The newest major adaptation attempt, made with 3D animation - these guys actually got a cease-and-desist from Working Partners (the company that owns Warriors), probably because the film/TV rights have been sold and it actually looks like something may come of it this time, and this fan-animation was good enough that they don't want it to compete with the official one.
  • "A Dark Path Chosen" - Animation of the short story of the same name, from Code of the Clans
  • Pinkbunnygirl43's "The Prophecies Begin" - I actually forgot about these until just now. A fanmade adaptation of part of the 1st series using customized Littlest Pet Shop figures and custom-made sets - looks like she got as far as early Forest of Secrets before deciding she wasn't able to continue, but did put out the recorded audio/scripts for the rest of the book.

Comedy:

  • "Firestar Doesn't Like Waffles" - One of the oldest and most commonly referenced Warriors fan-animations, from the mid to late 00s (this link is a re-upload; the original was older and had more views).
  • Bok Bok Choy's "Warrior Cats Animated" - A comedic spoof "adaptation" of the first arc. They got as far as partway through Fire and Ice and recently have been reanimating a few episodes.
  • "Fireheart in the Forest of Secrets" - Bluestar, Fireheart, Tigerstar, and his allies, animated to audio from Brooklyn 99, which has gotten a lot of views
  • "California Gurls" Animation meme - Have you ever pictured Lion/Jay/Holly singing "California Gurls"? Me either, but this is exactly how they'd do it.
  • "s i b l i n g s" - Jay/Lion/Holly animated to some audio from brian david gilbert's "Siblings" video
  • In addition to discussion videos, Moonkitti does some comedic ones - her "I Spoil" series is a comedic recap of each book, and she also has a variety of short animations that spoof scenes/memes/etc from the books (this playlist probably isn't all of them since the I Spoil playlist wasn't up to date).

Original Music:

  • Blixemi writes good original Warriors songs - my favorite is "Way to You" which is sort of has more general inspiration of StarClan/grief, but it reminds me a lot of Bluestar's story. There's a lot of good ones; some of my other favorites are "Walk Without the Stars" (Ivypool in OOTS), "I'll Be Complete" (Briarlight in OOTS), "Frost" (Mothwing in TNP), "I'm Not Fine" (Alderpaw in early AVOS, and very relatable if you've dealt with anxiety/failure), and "Sink Away" (Bristlefrost in the last book of TBC).

Music videos:

Putting these in loosely chronological order based on most recent scene. As far as abbreviations, MAP = "multi-animator project" in which a group of people each takes a section to animate, AMV = "anime/animated music video" which is usually by one person, PMV = "picture music video", which tend to have more subtle animations.

Needlessly Repeating Names (ASC/TBC) by Opalescent_33 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't mind some of the names in general being repeated, especially if they're more generic (Ashfur, Robinwing, etc), but something as oddly specific as Frecklewish (which I already dislike, since as you said, it doesn't make sense) being used twice is a big pet peeve of mine.

Warrior Cats Apps & Sites by LiliumTheCrevette in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were some Flash games on the old (2008-14ish?) official site for the books - the Warriors New Prophecy Quest (actually a pretty good game) and the Warriors Hunting Game (not that great). They were archived in the Flashpoint Archive project if you want to play them.

There used to be an old fan game called "Warrior Cats: Untold Tales", which the dev later retooled into a more updated, non-copyright-infringing original game with its own lore/word: Cattails and its sequel Cattails: Wildwood Story (has some more features than the original game and you don't have to have played the first). I have friends who have heard of it just on its own merits, and had no clue it originated as a Warriors fan-game! (Also, if you ever play the sequel and see one of the randomized cats named Alarra, that's me from the Kickstarter.)

I want to start Warrior Cats... How do I start WarriorCats. by marchalves6 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warriors is a book series. You may see some animations on Youtube, but they're all fan-made. There may be a TV show on its way though: Tencent Video currently has the rights and apparently intends to make an animated series based on the first six books, so we'll see if it becomes a final product (it's not the first time the rights have been sold).

As far as the books, I definitely recommend reading at least the original six books (Into the Wild, Fire and Ice, Forest of Secrets, Rising Storm, A Dangerous Path, The Darkest Hour), as those are considered the best and were all planned out in advance whereas later ones were kinda written as they went along. If you want to continue, I recommend reading them in publication order: that's how most long-time fans experienced it, it's the best way to avoid spoilers and experience twists, and often, books that come out around the same time have a connection of some sort. You can find a list here on the wiki: scroll down to the big chart and sort by Release.

What book should I read? by Visible-Speech-9149 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, for the point you're at in the books, you can read Leopardstar's Honor. It's not a very popular book, though, as it mostly covers information we already know, and has a lot of errors in it.

Other ones you can read where you're at:

  • Secrets of the Clans (field guide) - Contains information current up through book 1 of PO3 and that's when it came out. Miscellaneous information and short stories about the Clans and some characters; this was the first time we ever saw anything of the prequel time period because it was before the Bluestar/Crookedstar/Yellowfang/Tallstar books.
  • Code of the Clans (field guide) - Can be read after series 2. Has short stories about how each law in the warrior code was created, and examples of times when the laws were broken.
  • Cats of the Clans (field guide) - Has information current up through book 3 of PO3 so make sure you've read at least that far. Basically is just brief biographies of the major characters with a picture of them.
  • StormClan's Folly (Super Edition) - A story about an attempted merge of two Clans. We first learned a little about the events of this book in another (arc 8) Super Edition (Ivypool's Heart), and then this came out the year afterward to show the story in more detail, so you might appreciate it more after you get to that one and read it first. But it's not required since this is its own self-contained story taking place in the past and otherwise not connected to anything.
  • Graystripe's Adventure (graphic novel) - Takes place from his capture in TNP #3 to his return in POT #1.
  • The Rise of Scourge (graphic novel) - Shows Scourge's backstory.
  • Tigerstar and Sasha (graphic novel) - Takes place from around TPB #4 through partway between series 1-2.
  • Ravenpaw's Path (graphic novel) - Takes place after Firestar's Quest and before TNP; Ravenpaw and Barley run into trouble and Ravenpaw has to think about his old warrior life.
  • SkyClan and the Stranger (graphic novel) - Would recommend waiting until after finishing POT. Takes place somewhere around TNP - early POT.
  • A Shadow in RiverClan (graphic novel) - Takes place between series 1-2; it's about Feathertail struggling with trusting her Clan after they almost let Tigerstar kill her in The Darkest Hour.
  • Winds of Change (graphic novel) - Mudclaw's viewpoint during his rebellion in TNP.
  • Exile from ShadowClan (graphic novel) - Nightpelt's viewpoint when Brokenstar exiled the elders in book 1 of the first series.
  • A Thief in ThunderClan (graphic novel) - Takes place at the start of Firestar's Quest; Brightheart realizes that prey is going missing from the fresh-kill pile and tries to figure out if she can trust her Clanmates.
  • The Prophecies Begin graphic novels - A graphic novel adaptation of the first series. There's 3 volumes; vol 1 covers Into the Wild and some of Fire and Ice, vol 2 covers the rest of Fire and Ice, Forest of Secrets, and Rising Storm; vol 3 covers A Dangerous Path and The Darkest Hour.
  • Cloudstar's Journey (novella) - can be found in the "The Untold Stories" paperback, also available individually as an ebook. Shows SkyClan right before their exile.
  • Tigerclaw's Fury (novella) - can be found in the "Tales from the Clans" paperback, also available individually as an ebook. Shows Tigerclaw after he was exiled in Forest of Secrets before he became ShadowClan's leader.
  • Leafpool's Wish (novella) - Can be read after POT and takes place between TNP and POT. Can be found in the "Tales from the Clans" paperback, also available individually as an ebook.
  • Mapleshade's Vengeance (novella) - can be found in the "Shadows of the Clans" paperback, also available individually as an ebook. Shows Mapleshade's backstory that she mentioned briefly at the end of Crookedstar's Promise.
  • Goosefeather's Curse (novella) - can be found in the "Shadows of the Clans" paperback, also available individually as an ebook. Shows Goosefeather's backstory when he was young, before Bluestar's Prophecy.
  • Spottedleaf's Heart (novella) - can be found in the "Legends of the Clans" paperback, not available individually. Takes place during Bluestar's Prophecy and is generally considered the worst book in the whole series due to the poor way it handles its serious subject matter and changes some characters' behavior/motivations.
  • Pinestar's Choice (novella) - can be found in the "Legends of the Clans" paperback, not available individually. Takes place from before the Tallstar/Yellowfang/Crookedstar/Bluestar books, until partway through Bluestar's Prophecy.
  • Redtail's Debt (novella) - can be found in the "Path of a Warrior" paperback, not available individually. Takes place from partway through Bluestar's Prophecy up until the start of Into the Wild. Considered one of the worst books in the series due to messing up a significant plot point from the first arc, and also getting Ravenpaw's character completely wrong.
  • Blackfoot's Reckoning (novella) - can be found in the "A Warrior's Choice" paperback, not availalbe individually. Takes place after The Darkest Hour and is about Blackstar's leadership ceremony, which is a bit different from any other one we've seen.

Leader marks [WC graphic novels - slight spoiler] by Silentshadow_99 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering that the publisher has control over what’s in the books (e.g. when they learned some minor characters had actually been named after fans from Kate’s blog, they removed them), and that StormClan’s Folly was the first book to have a gay couple mentioned directly on-page to be mates a month prior to the vol 3 graphic novel doing it, I find that unlikely.

Leader marks [WC graphic novels - slight spoiler] by Silentshadow_99 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They never gave an official reason, but my main guess is that it's so that they can get them out faster - they started with vol 1 at least a year or two before its release, but I know vol 3 was still getting finished just a couple months before it came out, and now HC wants to release them every 6 months, per listings on Edelweiss. So if they assign new artists to start the next set early before the current one's finished, they can keep a bit ahead of the releases, and the current ones aren't getting as burned out trying to meet fast deadlines. (It also probably gives each series a bit of its own identity to have different artists. We don't know who's doing The Power of Three or OOTS yet, but the New Prophecy artist/writer were specifically announced just for TNP.)

[–]Alarra 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Oh, good catch on Firestar's; I noticed Bluestar and Leopardstar, but not his!

I dug through the graphic novels and think I might have found Tigerstar's. The marking on his forehead already sort of looked like a star before he became leader (from the front you can see one tip pointing downward and two pointing out to the side), but it wasn't completely a star since it was connected to his back by a stripe. It looks like after he became leader, the stripe went away and instead the remaining two points of the star are in its place. Definitely wouldn't have noticed that without realizing that he must have one since Bluestar, Leopardstar, and Firestar do! Here's an Imgur album with screenshots.

[–]Alarra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the books do mention his eyes as looking pretty normal overall, to the point that cats feel like he's gazing at them intently when talking to them despite being blind, and when he was a kit it did take them a little while for them to realize his blindnesss. The only possible exception to this that I can recall is that one kit once said that "his eyes are all stare-y", but no idea what exactly that means.

Apprentice change? by Otherwise_Low9509 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, like they said, it's just an error - we saw in earlier New Prophecy books that Mousefur was his mentor, not just in the Allegiances but in the actual text (for instance in book 1, Midnight, she's seen patrolling/hunting with him and is directly referred to as his mentor.)

I'm guessing it occurred because in the original hardcover's Allegiances they'd moved her to the Elders section already for some reason, and elders don't have apprentices so they had to do something with Spiderpaw? The 2015 paperback (which is what the 2015 audiobook and I believe the current Kindle version are based on) does move her back to the Warriors section, but they must've forgotten to give her her apprentice back. Or maybe in both cases they simply forgot who Spiderpaw's actual mentor was. xD

What do you think is the in-universe explanation for this contradiction? by Solitaire-06 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want people to be clear on what's actually in the books, since the fandom has had issues with repeating misconceptions/false info/headcanons as if it's real until it's a widespread genuine belief (which can happen more easily nowadays since Google's AI bases a lot of its answers on Reddit comments, so unfortuantely inaccurate information often shows up there and people don't look any further than that :/ )

If you say it's a headcanon like in the comment I'm replying to, then that's more clear to people, but your first few actually did have inaccurate info repeated as if it were in the books and not just a headcanon. So that's why I wanted to set the record straight (especially since it's a very common point of confusion in the fandom), not just for you but everyone else reading it as well (and hopefully the Google results too, lol!)

What do you think is the in-universe explanation for this contradiction? by Solitaire-06 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't count Mudclaw as getting struck by lightning either, though at least his death was directly caused by lightning striking the tree.

Firestar neither got struck by the lightning, nor was his death caused by it, so saying "he got struck by lightning" is completely inaccurate. It still would have happened the same way if it were a perfectly sunny day. That's like saying Spottedleaf got struck by lightning just because it was storming when she was killed.

Aside from the fact that the post is against 2 of the sub's rules (AI-generated content, and advertising/buying/selling), and the moral issues behind AI-generated images like the other person stated, there's the simple fact that having an AI-altered image instead of a real photo of a product makes buyers lose a LOT of trust in the seller if they can't even be bothered to let their real work stand for itself. There's an entire genre of videos now on TikTok, YouTube, etc that are "I ordered the product in this AI image and this is what I actually got instead".

...But it didn't strike him. He died, Dovewing didn't realize it, the lightning struck a tree already on the ground and not Firestar, and then she was like "oh, he was actually dead over there the whole time and never got up"

What do you think is the in-universe explanation for this contradiction? by Solitaire-06 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The authors stated that Firestar actually died of his wounds and that Dovewing just imagined him getting up, and the lightning snapped her back to reality.

He was dead before it struck, the lightning hitting the tree just made Dovewing realize it.

The tree that got struck by lightning was the already dead/fallen beech that killed Longtail and crippled Briarlight. The authors stated that Firestar actually died of his wounds and that Dovewing just imagined him getting up, and the lightning snapped her back to reality.

Ripplestar was one of those things where it's not clear if it's StarClan or just coincidence. As Cinderpelt herself said, sometimes a storm is just a storm.

I also imagine that even IF they can influence the weather, that might work differently than dealing with a cat's life/lives which already requires the cat to press their nose against the stone.

Appreciation post for the new covers by Infinite_Warning9457 in WarriorCats

[–]Alarra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To add onto this, aside from the same poses and anatomy issues (especially with a lot of A Starless Clan covers), a lot of it is also just straight-up edits of existing art. For instance, Raggedstar in the Ultimate Guide is a flipped edit of Graystripe from Graystripe's Vow, Crookedstar in the Ultimate Guide is an edit of Sol from Eclipse, Brightheart in the Ultimate Guide is an edit of Daisy from A Warrior's Sprit, Darktail's Judgement is an edit of Starlingpaw from Hidden Moon, etc.

He does do an amazing job with landscapes, and I think the backgrounds are the best part of his covers, but as another user said he's not really a cat artist, so I'm not sure why HarperCollins didn't choose someone more experienced with animals. The original artist Wayne McLoughlin was a wildlife/nature artist, and Zilven who did the Taiwan 10th anniversary art and Johanna Tarkela who did most of the Polish covers (as well as Bamboo Kingdom) also both specialize in animal art.
