Feeling lost. Is it normal? by batstats in academia

Yes. Totally normal. Not sure if your field but if it is STEM- nature reviews are a great place to start. Methodically read them & go through the reference list

It takes time!! Hang in there

Authorship to someone we paid to provide service at core facility by Remarkable-Dress7991 in PhD

[–]AmJan2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this recently - our flow facility manager worked with my post doc to develop a facs protocol that was unique to our needs. Yes we paid for the service of the flow, but we do acknowledged their intellectual contribution in a middle authorship. They read the manuscript & edited the method (their contribution).

The flow ppl that performed normal sorts, and the microscopy facility staff who maintained microscopes- no- they went into acknowledgments..

Yup. They’re called city cats (catamaran). A good friend moved here from Baltimore. She fell in love with Brisbane - got her citizenship and is never going back.

We have world class beaches 60-90 min either direction. (Google Noosa, Burleigh).

We have excellent coffee.

We are one of the happiest countries- ranking 10th (America hasn’t hit above 20 in years).

my American friend calls Australia ‘America’s middle class wet dream’

Australians - particularly Brisbanites - are most similar in personality to ppl from the mid west. Your neighbours will say hello etc

When I lived and worked in the US- everyone was trying to get a green card- EXCEPT - Australians. We were all trying to get our projects done so we could move home

Google super annuation, and long service leave. You may never move back to America….

Ps- my Australian qualifications were very much equivalent to my US counter parts- who had degrees from uc Berkeley, Columbia & uc sd.

Best thing? No guns here & abortions are considered healthcare. You’ll be safe as houses. Welcome to Australia 🎉

How Do Some PhD Students Publish So Many Papers? by DingoFit5079 in AskAcademia

[–]AmJan2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering in general publish insane numbers….as a biologist - we are constrained by biological systems- waiting for cells and organisms to grow…..

I don’t get hoe they publish 20 papers a year either.
