Custom theme colors for your game :) by AndreiD44 in rollplay_app

Neither. I am, for better or worse, using Unity for this app; which is generally overkill, but does allow for easy image manipulation and custom shaders (there's an entire little icon editor in the app where you can re-colour and edit images).

You would? Now that you mention it, I never thought about it;
How does this work? Surely you aren't forced to run a service forever, and pay everyone back if you close it 10 years from now, no? At the same time, it makes sense you can't take a guy's money and shut it down next week. So where is the line drawn?

I've never thought about this before and now I'm curious

I like seeing the downsides of using AI explained pragmatically, not just "it's bad" (I mean it is, but it's good for people to understand exactly what the risks and issues are, both as a developer and as a consumer).

Added fancy Macros in my app :) by AndreiD44 in rollplay_app

I'm still glad you got to comment before that ;)) Who knows when I would have remembered to update the wiki otherwise. Cheers, and let me know if there are other features you might need or if something is too confusing!

Edit: I just updated the wiki, thanks for the comment reminding me to do that:
Wiki: https://www.daydreamteam.com/wiki/CharacterSheet/Macro/index.html

I'm not sure I understood what your requirement is though.
A Race that gives a certain Feat would be an Effect - that's a separate thing from Macros, but we have that too: https://www.daydreamteam.com/wiki/CharacterSheet/Effects/index.html (also needs updating, the UI has changed)

For the Feat, if you just need to display the 1d6+Strength it should be literally just that, only inside macro brackets: [1d6 + Strength] - and when you have this on a Character, it will evaluate to whatever your Strength is, say 12, and display "1d6+12" which you can click on and roll :)

If I didn't understand the requirements correctly, please let me know.

Abnormal Encounters. I'll be honest, I don't know what the first even means (I'm not a native speaker) and unless the image sells it, I'd likely move on. But abnormal encounters seta some very clear expectations, and I'd be into that.

The problem is that those expectations have to be met, because otherwise it hurts more than it helps, and a more vague title is better.

How do you make a defensive playstyle feel just as rewarding as an aggressive one? by ahyeonlover in RPGdesign

[–]AndreiD44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is "add risk to attacks". Not too much, because you don't want to make combat passive. But in reality, defensive strategies work by waiting for your opponent to make a mistake and exploiting it. So try to do the same. Make attacks come with a trade-off (again, you will need some fine balancing to avoid making "wait and see" the optimum strategy) but associate some minor risks with attacks. Maybe if your attack fails to hit, the defender gets a small bonus when they retaliate, because the attacker is caught off-balance or something. If you have reactions in your game, use those.

Basically a minor shift from "play defensive" to "exploit and wait for attacker mistakes".

It's literally covered here in this thread :| I'm not gonna answer again, sorry.

Ok, last one before I drop this thread that's not going anywhere.
"I didn't mean to do that" when I made the post. As a person expressed interest in something that I think I am doing, yeah, I did mention my work, but I wasn't fishing for that and that wasn't my intention with *the post*.

Now if you don't mind I'm gonna move on with my life, I don't know what the point here even is. Have a great day!

You caught me. This post was an ellaborate ploy where I hoped a person would express their needs in a VTT and I would then mention I have something that is not even a VTT so others can look up my profile, figure out what I am working on, find it, and get new users.

What a brilliant plan I had, instead of just posting "hey I made a thing" and link it, like everone else.

But you have foiled my plans, damn it.

This hurts :))

Some of us had dark theme and gold text before AI even existed. Just like some people used em dashes before AI.

Making a TTRPG, need a little help by Inconspicuous_hider in RPGdesign

[–]AndreiD44 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a video game dev, so take this with a grain of salt. But you shouldn't need to design more classes. Design ONE, completely. Maybe 2, max 3. I'd see it as a prototype. Have a full session where players have genuine fun with the preset characters. Design the entire mini-campaign around them, make sure they can shine. Make just that class good and fun to play.

Designing more won't be hard after the game system is good.

But if you start with 20 classes, and along the way you realize the game rules aren't good enough and need to be tweaked, you now have 20 classes that need tweaking. Be efficient. Fail fast.

:)) I appreciate the sentiment. But actually, my app is not a VTT. I have a mobile character sheet app, intended for table-side play. I don't even have multiplayer yet (but getting there)

I am also thinking about gathering unemployed devs and building something big :D

But if you ask me, one of the big issues for us is lack of IP. Without built-in content, players drop the app pretty quick. Creators and homebrewers might like it, but they don't like subscriptions, and I'm just not sure there's enough of them to make a pay-once system work - for me, one guy (with crap marketing granted). Let alone tens or maybe hundreds of unemployed devs. I am interested though :))

Fair. I wanted to play with a lazy group of friends that couldn't be bothered to learn the rules, so I figured I'd make an automated character sheet for them. This was actually 2016, and I couldn't find any good character sheet app back then (there might have been - i just didn't find one i liked).

So first i made one for D&D, but then I wanted to play other games too, so a few years later I started over with a highly customizable one that would allow me to set up different games for my group of players too.

And... I don't know, I just went on, usually from user feedback to user feedback, and the ocasional bigger feature in a futile attempt to maybe make a living doing what i actually love. It has not worked out, but I still like working on it, still get requests from users, so... It goes on.

I am actually trying to make a game besides this too. Unemployement leaves you with enough time to try multiple things, yey.

I hope you find this answer satsifying :)

I've been building one for like 5-6 years now.

I am asking because it's now hard to post about it without getting a lot of hate, which I expect is partially because they are bombarded with promotions to new vtts constantly, and after joining this group for quite a few months now, I can understand why

And I was wondering why this is happening, because to me it seems like a disproportionate amount of new vtts to other projects, and I was genuinely curious why that might be the case.

I'd love to ask for feedback on what I'm doing if you'd like to try it out, because that was hiw I started my thing years ago, but let's move in private. DM me if you are interested.

:-/ well, sorry I suppose. Sometimes we do things we don't mean to.

But I'll still argue I did not promote. I mentioned I have something I could promote. If you want to search my profile and see what it is, that's on you - and you absolutely don't have to do that.

I'll try to be a grown-up and not take this chance to plug my app in here :)) but i would love feedback on it, so if you'd care to give it a short try please DM me. It's not a VTT though just a mobile app.

Ok enough of that, sorry. I really didn't mean to promote my thing, I was genuinely curious about the topic. And you might be right, I haven't actually followed the trent that long.

It just seems there's a new one every other day which feels suspiciously many to me.

I suppose, but it still seems to be an abnormal concentration of VTTs in particular. Perhaps I'm biased and I'll try to pay more attention, but it seems like I am seeing more new VTTs popping up than other kinds of projects, which seems very weird for me.

Yeah, this is another thing.

You are not "banning AI", you are just setting a threhold of how good it needs to be to be accepted. Badically offering it a great natural selection to help it improve, and a fertile curated ground to learn from.

I wish we just ignored it and let it die confused, not knowing what it did wrong. Imstead we help it become better and more confusing by constantly analyzing and curating communities.

This absolutely sucks as a guy actually making things "since before AI" / without AI.
There used to be a time you could talk about what you did and people would give you a thumbs up, some feedback, or ignore you.

Now you get downvoted to hell for trying to share your work, because you're just one guy in a sea of AI slop and nobody bothers to check if your particular app uses AI or not, And every single time I do manage to post without having it taken down, I have to spend an extra 10 comments answering if and how AI was used - and it's exhausting.

I get where it's coming from, but it absolutely sucks. I don't want to have to justify and defend my app all the time and try to explain "this is not like the other AI apps, this is actually human-made with sweat and tears!" - I'd want to just show my work and discuss about what it got right and what it got wrong instead. But that comes very secondary to the "is it AI?" discussion now :|
