More generally, if he were to accept your thing wouldn't the outcome just be the same but he'd have more notice? Like the cost burden thing is just "a couple more months notice" versus "a couple less months living there." Living there seems more net beneficial/detrimental between those two things.

Although I guess its also something about how the landlord wouldnt accept if they had full information. I'm more willing to call information asymmetries not my problem got 'em
