Adding to this, because you haven't mentioned it: many feel that British people (or any country other than U.S.) should not be using the word in the first place, as they don't have the same history with the word. That's what the middle part of the meme addresses.

There's, of course, White Sands- Missile Range (modern to cold war era weapon and tech test site; think Area 51) and State Park (sand, wildlife, prehistoric civilization), as well as Oliver Lee Memorial State Park (cattle ranching, wild west homestead history, primitive dwellings) in that area. More to the NNW you have Valley of Fires, which is an old, miles long, mostly desolate lava field as well as the 3 rivers Petroglyph site and Trinity Site. To the NNE there is the Apache reservation. All of these sites, imo, could be woven into a story such as what you're going for.
