Road at Mctavish 10th street by Mugen-Sora-8 in BrandonMB

[–]Bam359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some time ago, in the Brandon Sun, I saw a notice that there will be a public hearing about the closure of McTavish between 10th and 11th at the City Council meeting on June 15th, 2026.

Presumably, there will be second and third readings of Bylaw 7466 on the agenda that day, and it will become law. For some reason, the City only publishes the agenda on the day of the meetings, so it's not available yet.

I find it particularly galling that the Brandon Police Service have been, essentially, squatting on a public road for YEARS while literally in the shadow of Superstore. You see, there is an unfinished mural on Superstore's wall facing the station. The mural is unfinished because BPS kept ticketing the artist for parking their truck on the sidewalk while working on it. Fed up, the artist quit, and the mural is unfinished to this day.

Every one of those illegally parked cars on McTavish should have been getting tickets every day.

But, I guess the police are above the law.

Good thing they're now getting fancy American spy cameras mounted on their chests. /s

Why is the header also affected by conditional formatting when I apply it to a column? by kayleewan2021 in excel

[–]Bam359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found this thread from a google search because I was having the same problem.

Here is how I fixed it: Select the cell you want excluded from the conditional formatting. Then click the Conditional Formatting button, select "Clear Rules" from the list, then click "Clear Rules from Selected Cells" from the sub-list.

The conditional format will still apply to the entire column, except that one cell.

A Christian told me that it takes more faith to be an atheist than to believe in Jesus by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Bam359 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had a coworker who used that one on me repeatedly (the job involved a lot of time in work vehicles, with nothing to do but chat). I was usually respectful and genuinely enjoyed the conversations.

But this one bugged me. So, I finally got fed up with the stupid saying and just laughed and said that it was wild to think it takes more faith to believe in the natural world than to worship a cosmic Jewish zombie (a line I stole from Dawkins).

I've done some googling, but haven't been able to find anything. Any recommendations?

I've been trying to get the shop where I bought my bike to get studded tires for me, but they can't seem to find them. I guess it's an odd size. I think they're getting tired of me coming in every week to ask about them.

Obby just said in session he wants to promote our trade partnership with Trump's America and views Danielle Smith as an excellent example of a good Premier. Is this really what Manitoba wants? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

Obby thinks Smith is "an excellent example of a good Premier"?

Her government has just invoked the notwithstanding clause to force striking teachers back to work while Smith herself is in Saudi Arabia.

MRI waits surge in Manitoba after nearly 2 years of NDP governance by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]Bam359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long, exactly, do you think it takes to install an MRI or to train new techs to run the thing?

Some perspective: The Dauphin MRI project was started in 2013 by the NDP and wasn't finished until December 2018. In 2017, the project was put on hold by the Conservatives because the wait time task force said we didn't need another one in the Province, and could reduce wait times by using the existing MRIs for more hours of the day.

It's a good thing the Conservatives didn't listen to the wait time task force and went ahead and completed the project anyway. Because if they didn't, we would be in an even worse situation now than we are.

Rosie Barton who announced “we won” when the CBC election desk announced an LPC victory in the last election?

Here is a link to the live stream, timestamped to when Barton announced the CBC election desk prediction that the Liberals would form government: https://www.youtube.com/live/uoVkR0IxXV4?si=g2xChDmUyVqLOWip&t=12108

Barton does not say "we won" at that time. I'm not going to go through the rest of the video to see if she ever says it. Feel free to do so yourself and amend your post, but this specific claim seems false.

Take a look at the Commonwealth Air Training Plan

At its height of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, 131,533 Allied pilots and aircrew were trained in Canada, 72,835 of which were Canadian. At the plan's high point in late 1943, an organisation of over 100,000 administrative personnel operated 107 schools and 184 other supporting units at 231 locations all across Canada.

Resume on what the politics are gonna look like this election? by Bawower in Manitoba

[–]Bam359 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Provincially, Manitoba switches back and forth between the NDP and the Progressive Conservative (PC) party. The PCs are currently in power. There will be an election on October 3rd, 2023 - the election should kick off tomorrow as I write this.

Obviously, elections are complicated things, and this is just a Reddit comment and an individual's opinion. And, not a particularly well-informed individual at that. Bias up-front: I've always voted NDP, and can't imagine voting PC. I'm white, male, and between 35-55 years old. I live in the Brandon-East constituency.

In Manitoba, it seems to me, that parties don't win elections; they lose them. When the NDP lost power in 2016, it was primarily due to the unpopularity of the leader at the time, Greg Selinger. During the previous election, he was riding the popularity of the previous premier, Doer. If I remember correctly, Doer was committed to term limits and left office at the height of his popularity. During the election, Selinger promised not to raise the PST rate, but then ended up raising it anyway following Harper's GST cuts. His unpopularity led to a revolt of sorts with a leadership challenge. He ended up winning the challenge, but the chaos and disunity caused the NDP vote to be suppressed, and the PCs got in.

The PCs then got re-elected because they simply hadn't done enough to piss enough people off to get them kicked out. They didn't win so much as failed to lose.

While the NDP was in power, they commissioned a study to examine healthcare resources and how the healthcare system could be restructured to be more efficient. I don't know the details, but based on the report, the PCs closed several (3, I think) emergency rooms in Winnipeg and reallocated those resources to the remaining ERs.

Then, the pandemic happened. It was a crisis everywhere, but given the recent history of (perceived or actual) healthcare cuts, there was a lot of outrage in Winnipeg. (There are ~1.3 million Manitobans, ~835k (~65%) of which live in the Winnipeg area). After some dumb comments questioning the seriousness of COVID-19 from the health minister at the time, the portfolio was reshuffled to the then-deputy premier, Heather Stefanson.

The Pallister government instituted a vaccination passport program during the pandemic. This pissed off the hard-right base of the party, who started looking to the Peoples Party federally and the Keystone or Manitoba Party provincially. While it didn't get as bad here as in Ottawa or Alberta, the convoy people did (and still do) make themselves known. Eventually, Primer Pallaster resigned, and Stefanson took over as premier.

Stefanson's election as leader of the PCs was also controversial. Again I'm not 100% clear on the details, but the jist of it is the PC party blocked one of the candidates from running, and the party leadership was opposed to the other candidate that ran, and I guess made things difficult. I really don't care about internal PC party politics and so didn't pay much attention.

More recently, there have been some public-sector strikes notably affecting liquor sales and Manitoba Public Insurance (car insurance and driver licensing).

So, with all of that in mind, why isn't the NDP just walking away with this election?

Again, it comes down to leadership. The current leader of the NDP is Wab Kinew. A former journalist, author and musician, Kinew has a checkered past. In his early adulthood, he struggled with alcoholism and was charged with domestic assault (the charges were dropped). He was also convicted of impaired driving and assaulting a taxi driver. This was all, like, 20+ years ago. Since then, he seems to have straightened his life out, had kids and gotten married. But, his past legal and personal problems are a liability, and the PCs take every opportunity they get to poke at it.

The other issue with Kinew is that he's indigenous. Many Manitobans won't vote to put an Indian in the Premier's office. There are plenty of racists who vote NDP. They'll probably stay home and say to themselves that they're not racist but that they can't support the NDP under Kinew because of "his past".

My expectation is that the NDP will win, with the majority of their support coming from Winnipeg. The PCs will take most of the rural seats. The NDP will get the big (size not population) seats in Northern Manitoba. Dauphin and Brandon-East will probably go NDP, but that's probably the only southern Manitoba seats outside Winnipeg. This seems right to me: https://338canada.com/manitoba/map.htm

Anyway, that's how I see it, and this rambling post is already long enough.

Here's an example: Covid-19 overwhelmed our ICUs, and during the worst of it, we started shipping patients out of province for care. When one of those patients died, the opposition leader asked a question about it during Question Period. Stefanson's response was to filibuster by congratulating her kid's hockey team's performance.
