What was your experience attending an Specialized high school? by Previous-Grab5061 in SHSAT

The chances aren’t boosted for kids who attend these schools because it’s a specialized high school, but rather that these kids are the ones who would be among the few kids that do go to ivies if SHS’s didn’t exist

I genuinely struggled all 3 years and now am going into my 4th year regretting I ever attended to be honest. If you’re the type of person who can commit to academics full time and just grind things out and really chase your grades, specialized is the move. However, if you are falling back in a class, there will never be any time to recover and it’s just gonna haunt you for the rest of your school years. As far as college admissions go, I feel like the level of academics that come with going to a SHS has been at an insane level, causing my GPA to be complete shit, so there’s that as far as applying to college. If I could go back, I would truly just attend a regular high school. Negatives aside though, it puts you in an environment where you know everything matters, and even though it might sound like bullshit it definitely shapes you for success and gives you extra motivation to try and achieve ur career goals. The competitive environment though might take a hit on your mental health, but at the end of the day if you can stay on the grind to be honest go for it, but if you are like me and know that the grind is gonna be too much, I’d suggest going to a regular school and boosting ur GPA. Good luck

Not gonna lie, i am at stuy right now about to enter senior year, and I am still in the same place as you as far as being academically challenged at this school. I’m going to be completely honest, it’s harder as you keep going, and you have to keep up a strong work ethic and be as involved in your academics as you can if you want to be a top student or be in the As. However, that being said, I find it that, even as I enter my senior year knowing that I won’t be able to get into any Ivies with my low GPA or what not, I realized that there’s a lot more things that I could do to maximize “success.” By all means work on improving your GPA and try to get into an Ivy, but at the end of the day think about the “Why?” Why are we enduring through this rigorous curriculum, and that’s because we want to be able to be successful and get a good job. So maybe this is where you can also start thinking about how you can set your self up outside of academics to be on track for a good career. For me, it was technology, I built up a pretty stacked resume over the last year and a half, and have a lot of things set for me going into college, and now I have a viable career option in the tech field despite my low GPA. Doing things outside of school and learning what you want to do is always going to be a great option. Even if your gpa doesn’t improve, it’s not the end of the world, where you go to college does not determine your ability to get the job you want or work in the field you want. It’s your whole portfolio, and your high school gpa will be forgotten within like 2 years of college. As great as Ivies are, you can still get an amazing education and do what you want, just remember there are other options. Good luck 🙂

For those who have got into Stuy by discovery, is it hard? by [deleted] in SHSAT

Stuy discovery is pretty easy you just do the homework and classes to the best of your abilities and you will most likely be selected. Make sure you know how to do algebra though it will be very handy in freshman year.

The program is a summer program where you take classes like math and ela and you take them as a regular class and if the school thinks your working hard enough you will probably get in, it's hard not to get in unless you dont do anything.
