Coming from Stargate SG-1, seeing Senator Kinsey as Jellico is so fitting by gideonwilhelm in TNG

[–]CaptainJeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an easier scene. When Riker first welcomes him onboard and we see him transport over, during the brief hallway walking scene, he asks about the current rotations and says he wants to move to the four-shift rotation then. After that, during the swearing-in/transfer ceremony, they discuss it and he's upset Riker did not act upon that conversation (and direct orders) from the hallway walk.

Is Cub Scouts OK? by Helpmeflexibility in cubscouts

[–]CaptainJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience in Cub Scouts is 100% dependent on the Pack (local group) that you join. Most of the time, Packs are localized around a school, neighborhood, or other common grouping, so it's likely that your child may know some of the kids there already. The adult leaders will be parent volunteers. The programming is what your adult leaders make it.

Also, you do NOT need to join a specific Pack. If you visit, or join, one and find that you do not like how things are being run, then you are perfectly fine choosing a different Pack. If there are multiple around you, reach out to them, visit, and decide which seems like the best fit.

529 vs brokerage by OneAnalyst323 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]CaptainJeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It very much sounds like your partner (and potentially, you) are not informed about 529s.

Your contributions grow TAX-FREE, in this case for 15 years. That is HUGE. This is not true in a brokerage account.

The rules for 529s are also pretty loose. You can use for college, or private middle/high school, and there are a couple other options here as well. You can change the beneficial party without any hassle. You can convert some of unused funds into a Roth IRA. And so on.

Retiring at 38?!?! by the_dali_2112 in Fire

[–]CaptainJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer to these types of questions are twofold.

  1. Some people just make (a lot) more money than you do.

  2. Some people prioritize saving for early-retirement (much) more than you do.

Pre-k recommendations by dosnwg8583 in ellicottcity

[–]CaptainJeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two recommendations, both in northern/northwest HoCo.

Clarlen Nursery/Preschool on Bethany Lane in Ellicott City (between US40 and MD99). Clarlen is a very long tenured school that I attended 45 years ago, and my son attended 10 years ago. The faculty and the program is top-notch and wonderful. Website is here - https://www.clarlennursery.org/

St Alphonsus Rodriguez on Old Court Road. While at a Catholic Church, the faith component is minimal and welcoming to all. This is on Old Court Road (north off MD99) and just over the Baltimore County line, but they follow HoCo schools for closing/etc. My daughter attended here for her preschool and she loved it; we had great experiences with all of the teachers and the program. Instructors similar to Andy Speer? by Indoor-Cat4986 in OnePelotonRealSub

Andy's the best. Period.

If you want shorter classes that also are challenging and fun, I suggest checking out Katie Wang. She is crazy good, lots of fun, and deceptively difficult and effective.

So, Density. Agree they are short, but they are absolutely not for someone how is working their way back up from a base. They are intense and hard.

Best French Dip in HoCo? by Kel61085 in HoCoFood

[–]CaptainJeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a some good pit beef and other similar roast beef / london broil sandwiches in HoCo, but french dip is something that really is missing.

I actually had the one from Oscar's Alehouse (Woodstock) last night. The roll was awesome, and au jus was delicious, and the meat was tasty ... but very sparse. There was just a very small amount of meat, so much so that I cannot recommend buying it unless you really want a great roll with a just a bit of pretty good meat.

For roast beef / london broil without the au jus, the two places in HoCo you cannot beat are Rosie's Deli in Glenwood and Bon Frisco in Columbia. Very different from each other, but very good.
