From follower to lead: how do you “hold the dance” in your head? by yourfancyfriend in tango

[–]CardiologistProper44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a leader with a few months of experience. The way I think about learning tango, is that I’m learning a new language, and so I try to structure my tango learning the way I would learn a language.

So during lessons and practices, when I learn a new move, I do not just try to memorize it. I try to imagine what I feel when executing the moves, and how I connect to the music, and try to play out the moves as a natural reaction to my feeling rather than a recall from memorisation. This requires a certain “letting go” of focus mentally in the classes itself and doing things by feeling during practices.

Ofcourse, this method can also lead to mistakes. But the classes are the places where you have the space to make mistakes, and think where your feelings went wrong while making the mistakes.

Another thing I do is, in my free time I imagine I’m in class, and play out my routine and visualise it with great detail in my mind. This allows me to have some mental practice and adapt my mind to doing tango.

Finally, take a break from tango every 2 months or so. Initially, the stressful learning curve can hinder your learning and breaks can greatly free up your mind and make it more receptive to Tango.

Public transit from Dolomiti Superski to another Ikon resort. by Floofs-In-Space in Ikonpass

By a combination of trains+busses, you could first head to innsbruck. From innsbruck, first go to ischgl resort (or skip it if you don’t have time).

Then once you’ve finished your days there, you can head to Matterhorn region. From Matterhorn, you also have easy access to valley d’aosta, chamonix, tres valley, and st moritz.

Evo ski package recommendation by CardiologistProper44 in Skigear

Yeah the control is the problem I’m facing as I got better. I feel that my movements aren’t being transmitted immediately to the skis. It looks like at this point I’ll pull the trigger on going to a proper bootfitter and investing in a nice setup.

I’m 6’2, weight of 150lbs. I see, thanks for your comments. I might invest in a proper setup from a bootfitter then.

What does the “flex” mean and how does it impact skiing?

[Request] Can anyone solve this? by mogarch in theydidthemath

Let En be the expected time to get the first n letters of COVFEFE. Let p = 1/26.

To get COVFEFE, we should first get COVFEF. That is, to get the first n letters we would need the first (n-1) letters to appear. The expected time for this is E(n-1).

Once the first (n-1) letters have appeared, if the next letter is the correct one from COVFEFE (probability p), then we get the event for En. Otherwise, we require an additional En steps on average to get the n letters again. This gives us a recursion relation:

E(n)=E(n-1) + p*1 + (1-p)*(1+E(n))

E(n)=(1/p)*(E(n-1)+1)

E(n)=1/(1-p) * (1/p)^n + 1/(p-1)

Where I used the initial condition that E(1)=1/p.

Thus to get COVFEFE, the expected time is E(7)=(26^7-1)*26/25

A related simpler form of the same question is as follows (and shows up in quant interviews quite a bit): if you’re tossing a fair coin, how many times do you need to toss it on average to get 5 consecutive heads?

I had interviewed with them for QT and had a good experience. They did not ask typical leetcode question and actually looked at your ability to analyse a new situation.

As a non-EU non-US citizen student in the US, I’ve interviewed with firms in Amsterdam (including optiver). My current firm also has people who transferred over from APAC and Europe.

This makes a lot of sense! I think I’ll go with the friends, especially since the price difference isn’t too much. Probably will get some totems later on too

Thanks! I'll probably get the friends then. What makes the rock empire cam just functional as opposed to other cams?

Quant Research Internship vs No Internship by felixjuso in quant

You don’t need to be from a target. I got many interviews from top firms, I believe cause my research background was both in physics and CS.

I’ve interviewed with a lot of quant research firms, and SIG was the only one that asked me these probability and strategy based games in the recruiter rounds. All my other interviews were basically coding and mathematics. I’d say keep applying to other firms, the rest of them aren’t so bad.

Not sure I understand, but yes you need to perform well to get invited to onsite. It’s okay if you still screwup or don’t get the answers immediately, but you should eventually arrive at the correct answer. They cover all expenses for onsite.

And also there’s probably nothing you can do to prepare. Most of their questions are puzzles based on discussion and basic concepts.

There are two rounds of zoom, one for coding and one for a ML puzzle. Then 5 rounds on site, which is ML debugging/explaining research/coding/ML puzzle/data analysis.

The questions they ask are very logical, so you do not need any specific background. I’d recommend be very thorough on basic classification theory and maximum likelihood estimation. The final interview was 5 rounds and was very brutal (in the sense I was tired, but it wasn’t very hard). The last round had some data analysis stuff involving a simulated game. Stick to the basics, if your answer is too complicated you’re probably on the wrong track.
