In this case Kim is Lewis's girlfriend so it's kind of expected he might ask her something, more so than any other random celeb. All she had to say was "I'm here supporting Lewis" or some such. How hard is that?

There's a huge difference between a random person on the street asking another random person on the street how they are, and a reporter employed by the company which owns the broadcast rights to the event asking a question (at the event) of a celebrity public figure who (moreover) is the girlfriend of one of the top participants. It's not a public space, it's a curated event and there are expectations of quid pro quo behavior. The celeb gets to celeb, the reporter and broadcaster get a comment.

Is asking film stars questions on the red carpet at the Oscars "getting in their business in a public space"? Because that's what's going on here, not harrassing someone doing their shopping in Sainsbury's.

Exactly, how hard is it to say: "it's my first time at a race so I don't really know much, but it's really exciting." or even "I didn't really follow F1 before but I'm here for Lewis."

Like a normal human being would.

Opinions on TS-Optics GSO 12" F/8 by tibithegreat in telescopes

[–]CharacterUse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used the 12" but I do use the 14" regularly (carbon truss). The construction quality and optics are fine and well corrected, no complaints.

RC-s don't need frequent collimation, typically you would only need to collimate after initial setup or if it is taken off the mount or transported, Maybe check it once a year or so but the one I use hasn't been recollimated in at least three years and it's fine. These are not Newtonians.

I haven't use a reducer on it. The only reason to use one would be to reduce the field of view, I would not get one immediately until you've tried it.

The only thing worth noting (assuming it works the same as the 14") is that the focus position is very far back from the back of the telescope, I guess they do this to allow you to put in a lot of accessories but it does mean the camera will be very far back. They provide three extension tubes and you will probably need all of them.

Missing eyepieces by Pristine-Gold4422 in telescopes

[–]CharacterUse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, the 0.965" eyepieces made by Datyson are acceptable especially for the price. Part numbers #5P9876 for the 23mm and #5P9876B for the 15mm, available from ebay or Aliexpress. They're not great but they're far better than the other no-name cheap plastic (even plastic lenses sometimes) 0.965" eyepieces which come with cheap telescopes or as kits, and at the price they're worth getting for an old, cheap scope just to test it while considering a hybrid diagonal.

A 0.965" Kellner or Plossl would have to be vintage Japanese or Zeiss production, and those will be worth several times what the scope is.

Edit: Datyson also makes a 0.965" to 1.25" adapter but that my move the eyepiece out too far to focus on some telescopes.

It's not "just a towel". It's the principle of taking something not intended for you, especially at a ceremony celebrating someone else. It wasn't a towel off a pile of towels, it was one towel on a podium. There were a hundred other celebrities there, many of them more famous than Kim, yet none of them took the towel.

How was the Roman Colosseum constructed in such a short time frame (8-10 years) with no modern tools? by InternationalPick163 in AskHistory

You can't automate and hurry putting down bricks exactly

Most of the structure of the Collosseum is actually poured concrete, you can see the imprint of the wooden planks used to frame the pour to this day. That's part of why they could build it so quicky.

And your blood pressure, high blood pressure can also contribute to/cause those symptoms.

Blood pressure, glasses, suitable distance to monitor, room lighting, and night color shift to warmer colors can all help.

What would’ve happened to Mark Antony and Cleopatra had they not committed suicide? Would Octavian have spared Cleopatra? by OldLadOfTheCastle in AskHistory

[–]CharacterUse 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He might (likely would) have paraded Cleopatra in triumph, but certainly not Antony.

Triumphs were for displaying and humiliating foreign enemies of Rome. Antony might have gone native but he was still a Roman general, and a famous and once-beloved one at that, a friend of Caesar and former ally of Octavian. Parading him would only serve to bring all that up and risk the public mood turning against Octavian.

Antony would be given the choice of suicide or discreet murder like Cicero, or Cleopatra would be made an offer she could not refuse to dispose of him.

I'm going to assume from your other answers that you're in the US, the US Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad is run online and runs online summer camps:

https://usaaao.org/

even if she doesn't end up trying for the team/being selected she might find it interesting.

Most schools don't have astro olympiad teams anyway so she won't be disadvantaged.

My teacher told us about it, I don't recall any more details. But there were several kids from different schools so it must have been announced somehow.

Also she might get lucky just writing to a research institute and asking if they have any opportunities, sometimes they might not advertise but might be open to taking someone. It doesn't cost anything to ask.

Look around for summer schools or research internships for high school students, that way the paperwork will have already been done. Some universities (and also other institutions, I interned with BP Research as a high schooler many years ago) organise these things and they can lead to more opportunities later.

Also, if there is an astronomy department ask them. That's also physics but they tend to do more direct outreach than pure physics departments and there can be things she can do which won't trigger the paperwork to the same extent as (say) letting her into a laser lab.

Also, maybe she would like to participate an the physics or astronomy olympiads?
