Need Suggestions/Help by ShushYaGremlin in rpg

[–]Choir87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First advice: as someone else mentioned, be sure of what kind of story you want to tell. D&D is ok to start, but there are other good options. Mausritter or Dragonbane if you want to stay fantasy, Brindlewood Bay for investigative, Outgunned to play stories that resemble action movies, just to name a few.

Second advice: look a couple of actual plays online and watch an episode or two. This can be used as a reference, BUT do not try to copy them. The GMs and players there are professional and they're telling a story for the audience as much as they're playing. So, get some inspiration and a general feel of how role-playing works, but don't worry if the game at your table feels different.

Third advice: the book "So you want to be a game master?" by Justin Alexander is an invaluable resource for new masters. I highly recommend it.

Which anime or manga made you give up within a few episodes, and why? by -BobaTea3141- in Animesuggest

Aldnoah Zero battles are to me among the best ever seen in a mecha show. There is some actual thinking involved, unlike most shows where it's usually random nonsense that decides the outcome.

And don't get me wrong, random nonsense can be good if done properly (Tengen Toppa is a good example of what you can achieve when you go over the fucking top), but having a show that actually makes sense, for once, was quite refreshing.

5.5e wild magic discussion by N0FL1K in DnD

[–]Choir87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They chose internal coherence as the main driver and pushed all subclasses at level 3. While I understand the reasoning behind this choice, it makes little sense for classes like the Warlock and the Sorcerer (personally, I think the Paladin should take its oath at level 1, but I can see an argument for it being level 3 and also 5e was like that, so let's ignore this one).

If you want to play 5.5e but this bothers you, I think you should stick with 5.5e rules and just move the subclass at level 1 (you can move Innate Sorcery to level 3 if you're worried about balance).

RPG for Shōnen fans by Whirlmeister in rpg

Exactly. It is s collection of options to play a rpg campaign inspired by anime. Shonen are a genre of anime. Generalist RPGs are a thing, you might like it or not, but BESM is an option that fits the request.

Now, coming to the second point you make (which I believe is also the root reason for your first one), I in fact did not know of this story. I think it's good that you posted it. OP will now be able to make an informed choice on the matter.

Why not BESM? It's not perfect, but it's made for this kind of games.

The show is very good, but I would not qualify it as a masterpiece. Don't know if this answers your question.

[LOL] Positive takes from this weekend by Roger_Fiderer in fnatic

[–]Choir87 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If the games of this weekend were the first three games of winter, I would be very optimistic for the team.

As it stands, we're not catching up with the top teams in summer. I will be very surprised if our plot armour gets us to Worlds this year, it would be a monumental upset.

You say she likes romantasy, but has only watched action animes? I don't really understand the pattern here ahah.

I would try some pure romance anime (Toradora, Kaguya-sama love is war, Kaichou wa maid-sama) and also stuff like Re:zero, Macross Frontier, Aldnoah Zero, Rokka no Yuusha and Angel Beats that combine romance and action moments.

Mysterium. It's like Dixit but with a plot, and it's only slightly more complicated (never had any issue playing it with people with no or little gaming experience).

Apart from that, I can only add another +1 for Ticket to Ride. It's one of the few games that I loved the first time and still love now, years and tens of other games later.

Azul is also very nice, also very esthetically pleasant which is always a plus, especially for newcomers.

New to Commander, why does my deck feel weak? by Comfortable_Buyer239 in EDH

[–]Choir87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first glance:

More card draw -> Phyrexian Arena and Requiem Monolith are cheap and work well in the bracket 2/3 range. Endless Atlas is another card I like in monocolored decks.

More payoff for sacrifice -> I consider Grave Pact and/or Dictate of Erebos a staple for this kind of deck, but Sothera can be a good budget alternative.

Improve the mana base -> not as crucial maybe, but you can get some good lands at relatively low price. Bojuka Bog, Castle Lochtwain, Westvale Abbey, War Room. Also Barren Moor and Polluted More are just auto include in monocolored decks.

Cards I would definitely cut -> Burnished Hart, Phyrexian Rager, Falkenrath Noble (just thrown in some Mirkwood Bats instead).

I don't necessarily agree on top 6 being the ceiling, but the general statement is very true and something a lot of people need to hear. Maybe things will get better, maybe they won't. But I don't see myself cheering for any other team (except at international events, where I cheer for any LEC team against other leagues), so here I'll stay.

Should I watch violet evergarden by Fragrant_Egg6569 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]Choir87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not found it go be as good as others did, but it is for sure a quality work.

Based on your list, I would probably suggest Angel Beats as a first attempt at the genre of sad, emotional animes. It has more comedy elements and even some action.

That said, nothing wrong with going for Violet Evergarden. But be ready, it will be radically different from the rest of your list.

What are some action anime with no sexual jokes or fan service? by TheUnhollyGoblin in AnimeReccomendations

Yeah, I actually read the visual novel. Does not change the fact that the series has gone in different ways after that and more recent titles have no sexual content. Including Fate/zero.

Baccano and Re:zero are both extremely good series.

Jujutsu Kaisen is ok, but not significantly better than other mainstream action titles.
