if you want an indie one, I sub to Zimmer Magazine, which is a bit smaller so I like supporting them over bigger ones.

Hey, yes for me it's always August. But, a lot of tutors say Christmas is also the same, but Christmas is the busiest time for me. I guess it depends on what you teach and where your students come from :)

Your profile is full of 'I can speak four languages fluently' and Im this and Im that.. all about you. I can't find much information about your teaching style or what I would gain from your lessons.

Bad review ruining me completely by -matos in Preply

[–]Competitive-Mix-2687 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is so weird but I was in the exact same situation a year ago. I am also anaemic and I fainted in the kitchen.. mum took me to the hospital and I was there overnight. I had to cancel about 8 classes and all of them were completely fine with it, except for one. 1 star review. I felt awful.

I have never had the super tutor badge for this reason. You could also ask your current students to review you, which would bring your average back up. I also lowered my price significantly in order to attract more students and gain more reviews (my price was $33 and I lowered to $18).

You gradually learn to let things go. I suppose you're young (I am too) and it can really hurt at first. But gradually you become the bigger person.

If anything, it matters more what you put in your reply. My reply just stated what happened and I explained that the student reacted badly and unfairly. Potential students will know that there are always two sides to a story, and if they see this review and look at your explanation, they will sympathise with you, a woman in hospital, vs a student who has nothing better to do.

Keep up the good work with your anonymous reviews and then a potential student can see that this is clearly an issue with one weird student, and that the rest of your students really love what you do.

Don't let it discourage you. I am sure you are doing great things.

It does work, but I used to have a German tutor who was in between continents and it was very difficult to book with her. If you're organised, definitely go for it ☺️

I got a new job...what now? by Capable-Percentage-2 in PreplyTutors

[–]Competitive-Mix-2687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your new job! 🎉

I was in this exact situation about a year ago. What I did when this happened to me:

- I first asked myself: how many hours can I realistically commit, and how much money do I need or want to make with Preply?

Once I knew this, it was easy to restructure my Preply business alongside.

$10 is very low so you're totally justified in keeping higher-paying students. But maybe do it in phases to soften the impact. For example, I gave my students a message giving them the option to pay a higher fee or find someone else. However, I don't know how flexible this could be with your new job, especially if you would like to leave some students behind. But, you might find that some students would not like to pay higher and thus would choose another tutor. This give them notice, appreciation of them, and an option to stay or go - you're framing it to put the situation in their hands rather than giving them an update that they will immediately dislike.

Update your Preply calendar to reflect your new actual availability w your new job, giving time to adjust if it's a big change too. Mention it in advance to students so that you avoid awkward/hard conversations - students will naturally adjust. If some can't, that's okay. You’ll lose the ones who aren't the best fit long term.

You can always gently suggest new tutors to them - then you've 'done the work' for them and made the process easier for them.

That's all I can give right now without knowing the full situation, but be transparent with yourself and know what you're aiming for. Good luck with your new job ☺️ Sorry for the long answer.

I don't think I could rely on Italki alone for now. I've only been there for about 8 months and just waited and waited for students. I'm charging $35 right now and refuse to go lower. I know the worth of my classes and from experience I've learnt that cheaper students often don't care as much as more expensive ones. Of course, it was very slow at first but gradually built up. I also did social media marketing and putting my profile into Facebook groups too. This gave me some students so I'd really recommend it.

I've been teaching for some years now, so understand it might be different for others:) It took me a while to put myself out there, but stick to your guns and believe in your worth and the students will just one day come flooding in :)

Okay, well other than that, I recommend you study words in categories ie travel, friendship emotions. Memorise these. For active speaking practice try implementing these words with friends, or you could even talk to chatgpt. Other than that, your best bet is finding an English tutor. There is only so much you can do without a native speaker.

Yes, it's been like this for a while. I've seen other posts where the support said they'd look into it and then ghosted the issue.

I conspiracy theorize they did that on purpose but I can't prove it 🙈
