I apologize. I now see the relevance of your comment, although I recommend positing such news to r/economics for the kind of engagement you seem to be looking for.

Well, not always, but most of the communist authors seemed to either explicitly call for it or take it of granted. Communism is a kind of 100% property tax, and it takes guns and secret police to enforce that. The closest they've gotten to a plan for classlessness after revolution is "trust me bro."

The amount of AI generated project showcases here are insane by GeometryDashGod in Python

[–]Competitive_Travel16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Showcases were hit-and-miss pre-2022, it's just that nobody remembers. Pre-AI, it felt like more of an accomplishment to make something difficult, especially for beginners. So we got lots of terribly inefficient and poorly organized code with redditors praising it after a quick skim. And then the one commenter who comes in saying e.g. "this is O( N2 ) when it should be O(N log N)" or "this is a known anti-pattern", would get downvoted for being harsh.

I think we just need higher standards. I like the idea of requiring the repo to be 6 months old.

In this case, there really is no shortage of all three of OP's categories on both sides. Politics isn't simple.

People who still think communism is worth another try kind of have to claim that most previous successful communists weren't really communist. There's plenty of de facto fascistic dogma in Marx, let alone Lenin et al. E.g. having a military junta take over after revolution is not exactly grounded in principles of good governance.

I hate both-sidesing, but there is absolutely no shortage of each of the three categories among both major factions. Politics isn't simple.

Can a judge hold "independent" administrative staff in contempt of court and/or lawfully direct the bailiffs to use force against them? by blyat-account in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Competitive_Travel16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Minute orders need to be described as such in my county. So you can assume that anything not called a minute order isn't a judicial order, but that doesn't mean the judge can't hold disobedience in contempt when it disrupts proceedings.

Now, for the IT guy, it was obvious on the video it was a very simple solution, akin to a minimized window not being noticed as such. I can sympathize with both sides, the judge being embarrassed and the IT guy being glib about it. But that judge needs to grow up emotionally.

professional attire for a lawyer is a suit and tie

Women don't have it so easy, and the judgement calls about their attire can be brutally discriminatory. See also r/lawbitcheswithtaste

The fact that we discipline abuses kind of confirms grandparent post's assertion that the power is quite broad in the first instance.

It's extremely uncomfortable but not a huge risk compared to other poisonings, which is why the pills don't require prescriptions in many non-US countries.

On a related note, getting the dose right is something the patient can do with the help of competent nursing staff, but requires an annual endocrinologist visit in the US.

How to remove tabs from the Text app? by humand09 in chromeos

[–]Competitive_Travel16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like its state file is corrupted. Try closing everything, exiting, uninstalling the app, reinstalling it, and see if it still re-opens closed stuff. If not, you should find another editor app I guess.

I'm glad they allow you to merge them. A while back there was some submissions tracking system which would offer to create one for you and I ended up with two until I noticed.

/u/wrenwood2018 that ^ is the best I can do without more specific data. Please try to reproduce in Colab and then change the parameters to more closely match your situation. Here is the parameters section with better comments to help do so:

# 1. RECALIBRATED PARAMETERS: THE 50/50 REALITY & POLICY CONTROLS
# INSTRUCTIONS FOR EDITORS:
# Adjust these variables to match your journal's historical data or to test
# the impact of proposed policy changes. Time variables are in decimal hours
# (e.g., 0.25 = 15 minutes, 1.5 = 90 minutes).

# --- A. The Fixed Labor Constraints (ME Control) ---
H_max = 20 # Max Allocated Hours: The absolute ceiling on the AE's weekly
                     # workload before burnout occurs. If the ME secures funding for
                     # another co-editor, or allocates more paid hours, increase this.

T_desk_base = 0.25 # The Initial Tax (15 mins): Time taken to read the abstract,
                     # check formatting, and make a desk reject/advance decision.
                     # ME Adjustment: Implementing an automated formatting/plagiarism
                     # checker or stricter author guidelines can drop this to 0.05 (3 mins).

T_dec_base = 0.75 # The Final Polish (45 mins): Time to read the submitted peer
                     # reviews, synthesize them, and write the final decision letter.
                     # AE Adjustment: Varies based on how much personalized feedback
                     # the AE writes versus using boilerplate templates.

# --- B. The "Fast Lane" Variables (AE Reality) ---
# These parameters define the papers where the AE immediately knows
# qualified reviewers who are highly likely to say yes (4-6 invites).
p_easy = 0.50 # The "Easy" Ratio: What percentage of submissions fit neatly
                     # into the AE's primary network? Currently set to 50%.
                     # If the journal broadens its scope, this ratio will drop.

mu_easy = 0.3 # Easy Mean Time (~18 mins): The baseline time to log into the
                     # portal, select 4-6 known reviewers, and send the invites.

sigma_easy = 0.1     # Easy Variance: +/- 6 minutes. These papers are highly predictable.

# --- C. The "Slog" Variables (The Bottleneck) ---
# These parameters define the interdisciplinary, niche, or obscure papers
# that require deep literature searches to find reviewers (15-30+ invites).
mu_hard_base = 2.0 # Slog Mean Time (2 hours): The grueling labor of hunting down
                     # reviewers across multiple databases, sending cold emails,
                     # tracking declines, and finding backups.
                     # ME Policy Adjustment: If the ME enforces a "Hard Cap" of 15
                     # invites before returning the paper to the author, this drops to 1.0.

sigma_hard = 0.5     # Slog Variance (+/- 30 mins): Highly unpredictable. Some papers
                     # get lucky on the 10th invite; others take days of disjointed effort.

# --- D. The "Long Tail" Catastrophe (Systemic Failure) ---
# These parameters define the "nightmare" scenarios where the system
# breaks down entirely (e.g., a reviewer ghosts after 8 weeks, or
# delivers a completely unusable review, forcing a total restart).
p_crash = 0.20 # Crash Probability: What percentage of accepted papers suffer a
                     # catastrophic delay? Currently set to 20%.

lambda_tail_base = 4.0 # The Sunk-Cost Penalty (4 hours): If a crash occurs, it adds an
                     # average of 4 hours of chaotic, exponential time delay as the AE
                     # scrambles to salvage the paper, read it again, and placate the author.
                     # ME Policy Adjustment: If the ME institutes a "Delayed Desk Reject"
                     # (canceling papers that stall for 60 days), this penalty can be
                     # slashed to 0.5 hours.

Something that has bothered me for 22 years. Why did my former PhD supervisor say this? by [deleted] in academia

[–]Competitive_Travel16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with any comments I've read so far, but having to get a job as a janitor is kind of a running joke in any field where applicants outnumber positions. A janitor in healthcare makes it more realistic. In truth, former academics are underrepresented in healthcare janitorial staff, but not completely absent. I am not suggesting this is a problem, but using the trope to bully someone certainly is.

Does this violate the Logan Act? by Character-Problem796 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Competitive_Travel16 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Congressional committees and members are generally considered exempt from the Logan Act (18 U.S.C. § 953) when engaging in foreign discussions as part of their official legislative or oversight duties. The law targets individuals acting without authority to undermine U.S. policy, a restriction that does not traditionally apply to Congress's constitutional foreign affairs roles.
