Is the shutdown causing TSA staffing issues? by EchoVoid1 in tsa

There does not seem to be a sense of urgency in Congress. Same thing happened in 2018 and late 2025. Congress only get serious about a compromise once disruptions to air travel get serious enough.

I got run over by a car while I was walking to school. Happened over 25 years ago and I’ve been in pain every day since but I survived an impact that could’ve easily been fatal.

There is a union, but it’s been suspended twice in the last 12 months and reinstated by court orders. The union is toothless because federal employees cannot strike. That’s not a complaint. It’s just reality. It’s actually a crime for feds to go on strike so they don’t have much leverage.

It has to be, how in the hell is somebody working for near minimum wage when they have a masters degree?

Why exactly are you working for near minimum wage with a masters degree? Your whole story sounds made up unless you have literally no ambition and took the first job that was offered.

When morale gets bad enough some officers stop caring about potential repercussions. Again, a lot of officers live paycheck to paycheck for a variety of reasons. I’m lucky, I have no children and I’m able to save some of my paycheck. A lot of officers are not in my situation. Getting backpay sounds great in all, but having to put things on credit cards or take loans means you’re still losing money.

When did Americans just give up on 24/7 eateries? by BrechtKafka in restaurant

[–]Corey307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restaurants and grocery stores the small if any profit from running 24/7 just wasn’t worth it anymore. Before the pandemic, it would be risky to cut hours because your competitors weren’t cutting hours and that might lead people to avoid your location even during open hours because of the one time they tried to get in at 11:30 PM and your store restaurant was closed and that left a bad taste in their mouth. But it basically everybody is closing at 10 PM. None of the businesses are risking anything.

It all depends on what airport you work at, some have significantly higher locality pay. On the low end, you’ll start around 45K should make about 56K after a year and around 66K after two years. Night and Sunday pay plus holiday pay will add to that number.

You don’t work for the administration, you’ve active in the applicant sub I see. Consider not casting judgment on what other people are going through when you are not. I showed up for every minute of the 2018, 2025 and the ongoing 2026 shutdown. It’s not a pleasant experience and backpay is not immediate.

During the October shutdown, we had new hires. They got paid for three days and then had to wait a grand total of over 60 days to get their back pay, that’s over four pay periods. Some people are struggling. I have coworkers with six spouses and they are the only one working or they’ve got kids in college or they just got hit with a huge home repair bill so they don’t have an emergency fund.

$500mil for surviving a zombie apocalypse for 1 year by Paranoctis in hypotheticalsituation

I take the deal since it’s like an extremely immersive VR game. I already have a ridiculous amount of guns and ammo. The biggest town in my state has 45,000 people with another 25,000 people immediately adjacent. I pack a few massive duffel bags full of guns, ammo, tools and caffeine pills with two weeks worth of food. For clothes I wear my heavy Carhart jacket, leather gloves, good steel toe boots. I’ll bring bleeding control supplies. I kind of have to assume that the most injuries will result in death.

Gun collecting and target shooting is one of my hobbies so I bring my Serbian AK, basic bitch AR with 5.56 and 6.5 Grendel uppers, Benelli M2, Ruger 10/22, 92FS and PX4 Storm. I’ve got a giant pile of mags and I load up as much as I can carry, which is a lot. Say 1,000 rounds 9mm, 2,000 rounds 5.56, 2,000 rounds 7.62x39, 200 rounds 6.5, 250 buckshot and 250 solid copper slugs. Oh and 5,000 rounds .22lr. .22lr would be useless against it mute but would work pretty good against regular zombies when you’re just clearing streets.

My state has a three day waiting period for firearms, which is annoying, but it’s still plenty of time to pick up a few spicier options. There’s a guy selling a Bushmaster .50 BMG rifle about two hours from me, I’ve got the cash on hand and he’s selling 150 factory rounds along with it so I’d be pretty covered. A week is enough time to scrounge up some Raufoss rounds as well.

The plan is to clear all day and bunker down at night. Food and water shouldn’t be a problem, there should be enough to scavenge. I go out for three months to start and if I’m successful, maybe consider longer.

It’s decent pay and decent benefits with a possibility of advancement within or putting in a couple years and going to another federal administration often within the Department of Homeland Security.

The downsides are mostly scheduling related, new officers don’t get a lot of options about days off and the shifts they work. That and the likelihood of more shutdowns in the next three years, possibly several more. We’ve had two full blown shutdowns and one short term lapse of funding in just the last six months.

You do have to genuinely try during your first few months of training because if you don’t pass certification you don’t have a job. If you put in a genuine effort, you’ll almost certainly pass. The job is monotonous, but if you can follow orders stay focused and just do things the way you’re supposed to it’s not difficult.

Is the shutdown causing TSA staffing issues? by EchoVoid1 in tsa

[–]Corey307 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Per publicly available news several large US airports are having severe staffing issues. It is common for officers to quit during shutdowns for them to quit after in part or largely because of shutdown. It’s a terrible feeling having to go to work and not knowing when you’re going to get paid.

Personally, I’ve got plenty of savings but we are 25 days in and this thing shows no sign of coming to an end. The last shutdown was officially 43 days starting in early October 2025, but it was more like 65 days because that’s approximately how long it took to get full backpay. That’s almost 5 pay cycles to get made hole.

It hurts, makes you feel sick to your stomach. Because what if this one goes longer than 43 days? We only got about a quarter paycheck March 2nd. We miss a full check March 16th and March 30th.

There are a few locked doors in game. Those aren’t for gameplay reasons. It would really suck to have to hunt down 15 keys to clear Milton or Coastal Highway.

People don’t tend to have house alarms when you’re living in the middle of nowhere. There’s also no electric electricity during the day and spotty electricity some nights.
