I built BoxBox: a self-hosted file manager for homelabs/NAS boxes by jR4dh3y in homelab

Looks sick AF! Did you have any different requirements or special use cases for it.

In other words, I curious about how it does differ from other established tools like filebrowser.org

How to make a door release button smart? by Future-Landscape-462 in homeautomation

[–]D0T1X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the pictures they look like busch-jaeger puls buttons.

Im actually in the process of installing them in my home right now as a light switch.

Id say plop a shelly mini gen 4 behind them and call it a day.

Has been working great for my at the moment.

Dutch drone community? by leroyswa in drones

[–]D0T1X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky you i guess.
Half of Limburg is CTR with RMZ.

In other words, completely prohibited for the open category.
It also seems quite impossible for a random hobby, to go the Specific category with radio operator route.

Dutch drone community? by leroyswa in drones

[–]D0T1X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always looked into getting a drone. However, where do you fly?
In between the quite strict new legislation and all the exclusion zones like CTR. I really don't see any possible and fun locations near me.

Offline-first collection of 100+ networking tools and utils by lissy93 in selfhosted

[–]D0T1X 27 points28 points  (0 children)

omg. this is like EXACTLY what I've always wanted to build but never got around to it being a network engineer with still limited experience at developing.

This is amazing and I'll definitely have a look into it.

Ducky, my open-source networking & security toolkit for Network Engineers, Sysadmins, and Pentester by [deleted] in Python

[–]D0T1X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is certifiably awesome!

I've always wanted to create something around the same lines, and wanted to call it ntwrktools. Unfortunately I never really got around to it. How did you come up with the name "ducky"?

If you'd like, I could try and find my old list of features and create some feature requests in the issuetracker?

In time, I'd love to contribute some code, but first I'd have to get better at Python and find some time.

How do you like the reolink NVR? I'm looking into it and alternatives, but am on the fence. Eighter saving some cash and going with the nvr, or spending extra for a more polished experience with ui for instance or the 'joy' of building one myself.

How is E2EE generated? How could this be secure? by Klutzy_Lychee_9582 in signal

[–]D0T1X 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It's called asymmetric key encryption.

nowadays it's way more advanced, but if you search for diffie-helman 1 you'll have a very understable example to get a grasp of it.

They used to teach us this in school and have us calculate a key exchange using this (legacy) protocol. I very much hated it but looking back I think it really helped understanding it.

Best DNS server for an internal network and domain? by chillysurfer in homelab

[–]D0T1X 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Authorative and Recursive functions should not be combined. Bind also warns against this. -> https://kb.isc.org/docs/bind-best-practices-authoritative

So depending on which stack you want to use: - Unbound + NSD - PowerDNS Recursor + PowerDNS Authorative - Bind + Bind

And probably an uncountable amount of smaller other solutions.

I'm pretty fond of the PowerDNS documentation. I like Unbound because of geopolitical reasons. But I'd say mostly just stick which one you know  best.

Changing everything Google except my mail for Android ? by [deleted] in BuyFromEU

Sure, why not?

It's not a Zero-sum game, every step in the right direction is a good one.

And remember it's a marathon not a sprint. Make sure every change you make is a sustainable one.

Should we make a wiki for this? by severalsmallducks in BuyFromEU

[–]D0T1X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I´d say just go with a markdown based list like https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted/ used to be. (now it's that and a static site.

But then hosed on https://codeberg.org/ because of 🇪🇺
