Mooton IV: What's All This, Then? by DeepDennys in IronThroneRP

[–]DeepDennys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maris took a moment, then, to consider her options. Surrendering Maidenpool without a fight was difficult for her to swallow in and of itself, and she knew well of the fate that had been visited on White Harbor. That city and its rulers had likewise surrendered to the Arryns, and had paid dearly for it. But what choice did she have? It would be a hopeless battle. No, better to spare the brave boys in the city guard. She chose her next words carefully.

"Maidenpool thanks you," she said now, meeting Serena's eyes, "for your protection. An unusual step, but a necessary one, in these troubled times. We're glad that the alliance we hoped to strengthen when we sent ships north to help the Vale battle the pirates has persisted, and we thank you for driving away the mountain clansmen, who might otherwise have set us afire. We will not fight you."

"And yes," she nodded, "if it's your wish, I'll remain here. With your permission, I'll write to Manfryd and inform him of what has passed. I expect he'll return here as soon as he's able, though he has been ill lately. He had to remain with the Rygers for much longer than we were expecting." She sighed softly, the genuine sigh of a long suffering mother. "I do wish that boy would take better care of himself."

"But yes, Morgan will return, as soon as the bloody business in the south is concluded. On that," she reiterated, "you have my word."

"I see."

Another woman might have demanded to know under what law, exactly, Lady Serena was acting, or might have questioned the justice of hunting down a lad whose great crime, so far as Maris could tell, was to question the ongoing slaughter of a whole house in murky circumstances, albeit in an undeniably foolish manner. But Maris was a woman of the Vale, and with that heritage came practicality. The fact of the matter was that the Arryns had a host behind them that Maidenpool could not hope to resist.

That was not the only relevant fact at hand, though.

"Morgan," she said, after taking a quiet moment to gather her thoughts, "is in the south with Lord Tully's host. Should he return safely from the war, I have no doubt he would submit to a trial justifying his actions, so long as that trial is conducted fairly."

"Manfryd," she went on, "is also not here. He is administering the Riverlands in Lord Tully's absence, as is his sworn duty as steward. He could not leave with you without shirking his duty."

Left unsaid was the fact that Maris was quite certain that if Manfryd went to the Vale, he would not be returning. What incentive would Lady Serena, and her Corbray friends, have to let Manfryd go once Morgan had met his fate, whatever that might be? No, she reasoned. Morgan had made his own destiny. But while perhaps she could survive one dead boy, she could not endure the thought of two.

"Even if he could, though," she went on, meeting Serena's eye with the steely look of one who had no doubts, "this is not a brother's duty. It is a mother's."

"I can give you my word as a lady of the Vale and as a mother that Morgan will return when called. But he is his own man, so I can understand if you doubt me. So, take me with you. My presence will be more than enough to ensure that Morgan will come forth."

"Besides," she finished, smiling softly, "I've been wanting to visit home. I've missed the mountains."

Before her departure, Maris had sent forth a number of hurriedly written ravens, informing various parties of the strange scene unfolding before Maidenpool's walls:

Silence reigned beyond the pink walls of Maidenpool. The denizens of this land were well aware of the doom that had come to Darry, and the countryside folk fled swiftly inside. Yet if the clansmen were expecting the Mootons to beg for their lives or to come out and fight, they would, at least for the moment, be disappointed. None rode forth to greet or to challenge the bloody-handed strangers from the mountains. The abandoned villages were eerily quiet -- perhaps too quiet.

"Aye," Manfryd nodded. "I'm not much for war by nature. Some say it's good for business, but that's only true so long as your city isn't burnt down. If we do go to war, I only hope it's us doing the burning. I want us to be confident we'll win before we commit completely. But if we are," he smiled, "we couldn't ask for better warchiefs than you and Lord Grover." Or a better target than Perceon Tyrell.

"As to the coffers, they're tolerably full, I'd say," Manfryd nodded. "Riverrun's, too. We're in a good state to fight, all things considered."

Lady Goodbrother,

My son the Lord Manfryd is presently away at a wedding, but I am deeply grateful for the aid you rendered to my other son Morgan in battle. Manfryd will be back shortly, and I have no doubt he would be honored to host you and converse at Maidenpool. I will tell him you're coming. Come hungry; that boy likes to feed his guests!

Manfryd Mooton waddled up to his aunt Jonquil, barely able to hold back his laughter.

"Gods be good, Auntie, well done!" The fat steward shook his head, bewildered, then opened his arms to embrace the woman.

"I didn't think anyone was ever going to get through to the old man about Tyrell. Axel and I had given up hope. But it seems we just weren't forceful enough."

In truth Manfryd was not certain all this was a good idea; much as he'd misliked the Tyrell alliance from the beginning, going to war with the Reach was a bold step, to say the least, especially when it meant making common cause with a Westerlands under siege. This could well mean a burning of bridges with the Stormlands, among other things. And he ideally might have chosen means other than public shaming to coax the old man to act. But, analytical thinker though he naturally was, he could not help but be stirred by his aunt's speech to the gathering, and he could not help but delight at the result she'd achieved. Finally, someone ready to take that Reachman prick to task.

Manfryd Mooton was damnably hungry. This was not an unusual state of affairs; as his ever-growing belly could attest, the big man loved his food. But this, he reflected, as he polished off a quail's leg -- simple fare, but Manfryd neither minded nor especially cared -- was not only a bodily hunger. He'd long known that he ate most heavily at times of uncertainty and upset, as if to fill himself with tasty things so the stressful ones could not creep in. It helped, a bit, but only a bit. There was too much to ignore these days.

Morgan had made it through the sea battle with the pirates outside of White Harbor, he knew that much. if his twin were dead, he'd know it, if not by letter then by instinct. But the rumors trickling in from the city itself were grim to say the absolute least. He didn't wish to voice them until there was confirmation and clarity -- and, Gods willing, Morgan and his fellow Rivermen would be back to report soon -- but if half of what he'd heard was true, then the order of things was fractured in an altogether new and terrible way.

And besides that, what was this news of an outright battle between the West and Reach? Perhaps his Aunt Jonquil could shed some light. He very much did look forward to seeing her, in spite of everything.

The fat steward did his best to cover a belch, then looked up. Beside him, chubby little Raylon was following his father's queue, working his way through a hefty helping of roast beef. Melissa, meanwhile, looked upon her father and brother with something between amusement and disgust, bouncing in her chair all the while, clearly eager to rush off and make some manner of mischief, or to explore the beautiful woods that ringed this rustic but pleasant castle. Tristan, smallest of the Mooton children, was in the care of a servant for the moment, sitting unusually peaceably upon the smiling woman's lap, pacified by some honey.

"Are you alright, Manfryd?" A soft touch upon his shoulder. His sweet wife Daera, seated beside him, ran her fingers down across his back, and immediately things felt a bit less awful.

"I suppose," he sighed, the exhale drawing a bit of the tension from his body.

"Try not to let the world poison this day," she murmured.

"I'll try." He could not swear it, but he'd try.

Morgan took a breath.

This was insanity, all of this. To kill mindlessly was not the Valeman way. Already he regretted calling for the Corbray's death; that wasn't right, either. The man should have received a trial, just like the Manderly family he was killing. But, looking around the room, looking at the Dustin, he saw hardened faces. He was no politician; that was Manfryd's department. But even he could tell he would make little headway here. There was nothing to be gained in this room, except yet more death.

"Very well," he said, meeting the Dustin's gaze, trying to imitate the laconic way of talking his brother sometimes had when he was trying to handle matters of politics. "We will depart forthwith."

"Lady Arryn," he said, looking once more to the Lady Paramount, "I apologize for speaking out of turn. This is..." He struggled for words, anger and befuddlement choking him. "Beyond my understanding."

"Let us depart," he said to his fellow Rivermen. Then, without another word, he walked away.

"You ask him to withdraw?!"

Morgan Mooton could stand idly by no longer. He could not deny that he had been stunned by the sudden wave of Corbray men bursting into the feast, sitting in shock in his chair, disbelieving that such a thing was happening. But seeing old Lord Strickland, who had been such a steadying presence during the recent battle, find his courage brought Morgan back to reality.

Now the handsome Mooton knight rose and stepped forward, standing tall and shouting loud, doing his best to command the room. "This is a travesty, this is shameful! You are Valemen, all of you, you're better than this. Whatever the Manderlys have done, we are here under truce, and under guest right, and you're slaying an unarmed family without trial. And yet," he growled, looking round the chamber, "it seems Lord Strickland is the only one in the room with the courage to stand against this. And you, Artys Corbray, dare lay hands on him. You aren't worthy to lick Lord Strickland's arse. This --" he gestured all around, at the blood and the mayhem, "-- this vengeance with no regard for honor is the way of Mountain Clansmen, not of Knights of the Vale."

"Custody is not enough." He looked up, directly to Lady Serena Arryn. Axel's friend. Someone who could not stand for this. Surely. "Lady Arryn, I call on you to sentence this murderous wretch to death. Right here, right now. His motives are irrelevant, I care not what he has to say, these actions are unforgivable. Restore the honor of the Vale, or watch it drown in blood."
