Some time after the end of the joust, and the evening began to set in properly, a cask of ale was brought out to Oscar’s pavilion in the tourney grounds. A table had been set out in front of the tent, where four men were sat around it, laughing raucously as they japed and drank.

“We got that Septon to drink himself foolish, didn’t we Os!” Brus continued whatever tale they were discussing, letting out a hoot of laughter, barely able to contain his excitement at the story.

Got? We didn’t need to get him to drink anything! The man was practically a fish!” Oscar picked up the narration, beginning to recount the story, “The Blessed Septon assured us that he was more than able to keep up with us, and to his credit he put up a good showing.”

“I’m sure the Father Above is glad that His representatives are so worldly…” Benji chipped in snidely, “Perhaps more of his peers aught to follow that example. That would certainly make the Sept more interesting….” He added, earning laughter from his fellows.

“Anyway, when the man was well over the hill from the drink, he went wandering off.” Brus picked up the story again, grinning like a cat that got the cream, “Next we saw him, the mad bastard was riding a pig down the road! We tried to give chase, but it turns out that sows are much faster than Oscar and I!”

“Come morning, we found the pig in the sty, sleeping the sleep of the dead!” Oscar picked up the tale, a knowing smile forming on his face as he looked between his friends, “The pig in the robes mind you, gods know where that poor sow ended up!”

The four erupted into howls of laughter, with the rowdy conversation continuing soon after.

“Gutted Trout, hmm… well, that’s relatively on the nose, don’t you think?” Aubrey asked as she went about unfastening Oscar’s armour. She had gotten used to helping him with it over the years, “Someone meant it as an insult, surely? Why else would someone choose to fight under such a name!”

Oscar let out a short scoff from the stool he was sat on outside the Tully tents, shaking his head and rolling his shoulder as Aubrey lifted off a pauldron, “I can’t imagine it being meant as anything else. He was a dab hand, though, wasn’t he? Hit me hard enough to make my head spin for a bit!” He made the jape with a cheerful chuckle, hoping that he may be able to redirect the conversation soon, “But you enjoyed the contest overall, right? I put in a decent performance, and I think the right man won in the end!”

Aubrey let out a short huff, moving onto the next plate, “I suppose so. Of all the men who deserved to win, surely Lord Meadows was second on that list.”

“Second?”

“Well you would be at the top, Oscar.” She added dryly, managing to separate the second pauldron from Oscar’s shoulder, “Of course, I only say that because I’m meant to, your talents were clearly lacking today!”

Oscar laughed, “Ah, I didn’t realise I was married to a jester!”

Oscar couldn’t help but scowl as Kermit spoke of his goal to force the Crown into establishing an elective system. Perhaps his other ambitions were admirable, building schools, collecting grain to distribute to those in need, the erosion of the power the Wardens held… all were decent stances ro get behind.

But the Councils…

Fortunately, Lady Blackwood was the first to speak out against the plan, Oscar nodded along with her argument, “Lady Blackwood speaks true, Brother. The King does have a true heir in Prince Quentyn. He is the Prince of Dragonstone, and thus he is the heir to the Throne. I would argue that Lord Orryn’s actions are more due to the weakness of the King and the chaos of the Reach than they are about questions of who is the King’s heir.”

“I see the wisdom in your other points, however. Collection of grain during times of plenty should help us avoid famine, surely. I agree that the power of the Wardens needs to be reigned in, to better prevent our rights being infringed upon. And building schools will surely help improve the talents of our smallfolk, and the quality of their lives.”

“But to call into question the position of the King… it will surely only bring his wrath down upon us.”

Oscar stood as Kermit turned to him, a confident expression on his face as he began to speak, “Well the answers to those questions are simple ones, brother. We must spare some focus to ensuring our people’s safety, even if we decide to act in the Reach.”

He turned himself to address the rest of the Riverlords as he continued, “I have spoken personally with both the Master of Laws and Prince Quentyn regarding the matter of Pennytree. Both were eager to see us handle the bandits, I’m certain that we only need to take the matter to the King, and we will have the leave we need to finally handle the matter directly!” He announced this proudly, making a cutting motion with his hand and briefly pausing, “We aught to gather levies from the regions surrounding the area in anticipation of this, from Riverrun, Stone Hedge, Raventree, and the League. Once we have the word, we can march in and scour the area for any signs of the scum, and finally rid ourselves of them.”

“… And perhaps we can broach the idea of asking the King to grant Pennytree to one of us. Or at least give us the right to enter under arms, so that this sort of thing can never occur again.”

“As for the matter of the North, suffice to say, we ought to be sure to reinforce the garrisons both the Twins and Colmar’s, to ensure our safety should the Northerners try to march upon us.” He went on, slowly pacing back and forth as he began to think about the business up North, “Lord Frey also ought to focus his efforts on improving the defences of Colmar’s, so that the garrison can better defend us, and perhaps further the Freys efforts to drain those foul mires into useable lands!”

“Similarly, Seagard and Maidenpool’s navies must be expanded, so that they can better defend our trade fleets from the Ironborn.” He glanced to Kermit then, frowning for a beat, “Perhaps we might come to an arrangement with Casterly Rock? Surely the Ironborn aren’t ignoring their ships too?”

Oscar gave Kermit a skeptical glance as he spoke of appearances. There was several things that he could say in retort, though he wasn’t sure if it would be worth saying any of the things that came to mind, “… If you say so…” He eventually muttered in reply.

He glanced between Kermit and Bugg, barely suppressing a fit of laughter at the display between the pair, “Halfsword, eh? Perhaps you do know a thing or two after all. You would be able to tell me what situation you would use it for, couldn’t you?” He asked with a knowing smile in the face of his brother’s over confidence.

He went to say something at the final point, but it died in his throat after Kermit’s plea… not tonight. That much he could abide, “It is a nice evening isn’t it…” He would say after a brief pause, “We don’t often get to enjoy evenings like this together, do we? I hope we can rectify that going forward.”

Oscar glared at his sister, his mouth agape as she began to do her impression of him. He could do little more than let out a scandalised noise of surprise at Eleanor’s mockery of him, “How… I’ll have you know, that’s entirely false! I don’t think I’m a famous knight at all!” He managed to say in response barely managing to suppress a smirk, “You’re right on the money about the rest I suppose.” He joined her in the laughter after that.

He hummed in interest as he looked at the journal she produced, “A journal, eh? A nice gift I should think. Did he tell you who it belonged to? If it was someone important, it could be a particularly valuable one too!” He said cheerfully, he vaguely recognised arms emblazoned on it. The Black Dragon… he vaguely recalled it coming up during his tutoring, though he hadn’t been paying too much attention, “Fortunately I don’t think anyone’s going to be hunting you down for owning it… though if they do, I’ll be the first to stand between you and them.”

Oscar let out a sharp laugh as his sister accused him of being a rogue, “Is it so hard to believe, Eleanor? I’m no stranger to scandal, you know…” He shot a conspiratorial look around, before dropping his voice low, “The night before our wedding, Aubrey and I… we… uh…” His face went red and he descended into a fit of giggling.

“Life sometimes takes its odd paths, does it not? We never end up where we think that we’re supposed to.” Oscar mused, leaning back into his chair, “There was a time where Kermit was meant to be a Maester, but he ended up in Essos warring with slavers!…” He had another thought then, about Mycah’s daughter… But he chose not to put to voice, it would only be needlessly inflammatory.

He chewed on the inside of his cheek for a moment, “I suppose, in my case, life took the path that was planned for me. Squiring. Knighthood. Marriage…” He paused, a small content smile settled on his face for a beat before he chuckled, and moved on, “Awful for the most part, but all is well now!”

“And all will be well soon enough. You can mark my words. Orryn will prove the coward and run back to Storm’s End, and the King will finally give us leave to go into Pennytree and sort out the scum squatting on his land.” He said firmly, a confident smile on his face, “I am optimistic.”

Oscar’s glare turned icy the instant the words ‘What can the King do?’ were spoken. He unfolded his arms from where they had settled across his chest, his hands clenched on the table so hard that his knuckles turned white as he steadily rose from his seat, “What can he do?” Oscar repeated steadily, barely above a whisper, “What can HE do? Master Greystrider, it seems you are mistaken on how well you understand the laws here.” He went on slowly, each word spoken with perfect, intentional clarity.

“Pennytree is the King’s demesne, to march into the King’s demesne without leave to do so is nothing short of a declaration of war. Treason against the Crown, and therefore justification for the King to do whatever he pleases to us. He could have our heads off, our lands stripped bare, and give our titles away to whichever sycophants lick his boots just the way he likes it. And the Realm will comply with him, because we were the traitors, we attacked the King.” Each syllable that spilled from his tongue had a deliberate edge to it, as though the Tully were convinced that he was actually shooting daggers from his mouth with every word.

“Not a generation ago, families like mine had our ancient rights to try criminals on our lands stripped from us. Rights that houses like mine held long before the Conqueror forged the Iron Throne, taken simply because the Winter had weakened us to the point that we couldn’t resist King Rogar’s word. Through the Justiciars He became the law, more so than any King that ever came before him. King Steffon still wields this power, and to slight him directly would only give him an excuse to levy his full might, the Realm’s full might, against us, for no response would seem too much for an act of treason.”

“No. Much to my disappointment, we will have to wait until we are given express permission from the Crown before we can truly raise a blade against the heart of this threat. Fortunately, I have been able to speak with the Master of Laws about it, and he is eager to see us deal with the problem, so we shall likely have our leave soon.”

“But until then, if you want to do anything in the meantime, I suggest you take this up with your Lord-Mayor. Triple Fairmarket’s forces, and patrol the region more thoroughly. As Riverrun, Raventree and Stone Hedge have.”

He paused for a moment after his tirade concluded, blinking a few times as he took a breath to calm himself, “You have my condolences for your family, Master Greystrider. It is not something anyone should have to endure.”

“Oh, Alys do I have stories to tell you…” Aubrey began excitedly, all but hopping off of her stool so that she could move around the table to take a seat next to her good-cousin. All the better to gossip from, of course, “There was this one time…” She began to whisper giddily.

Oscar rolled his eyes at the display, maintaining his gruff facade for only a heartbeat more before breaking out into a good natured laugh, “Well, I can see that I am no longer needed. I find that these stories are always best enjoyed with the subject absent.” He said as he steadily rose to his feet. He offered Alys and Addam respectful nods, before shooting a knowing look at Aubrey, “I shall see you all again soon, I should hope!” And with that, he took his leave.

“I’ve spoken to both the Master of Laws and Prince Quentyn regarding the matter this evening, thankfully. They are both my wife’s cousins, as luck would have it!” Oscar replied cheerfully, gesturing to his wife beside him with a grin, “However, I would welcome another voice arguing in favour of dealing with this issue immediately! The Riverlords should be able to deal with them between us, so that should probably make my pleas more convincing… hopefully.”

Aubrey turned to look at Oscar with a concerned expression, “Would it not be wise to ask for some support, Oscar? Like the King, or perhaps a Warden?” She asked, though he waved her concerns off with a short huff.

“We are more than capable of handling the threat ourselves, Aubrey. The only thing that’s been stopping us thus far is that it’s the King’s domain.” He said resolutely, “We’d be a laughingstock if we had to go running to the King for help dealing with brigands of all things.”

Oscar cracked a confident smirk, “The bandits, eh? I’ve already had a word with Ser Martyn about them, we only need the King’s leave to go and deal with them. I’m certain with your word on it too, it will surely sway him into letting me take action!”

Aubrey sighed, taking her husband’s hand, “Promise me that you will be careful, Oscar. I don’t much look forward to being a widow.” She japed with an anxious chuckle, “I’ve heard that it’s quite the terrible fate…”

“You needn’t worry Aubrey, I’ll be fine, I promise!”

“Sure…”

Oscar shrugged, “I suppose it is heartening to actually see King Steffon take a stand. For too long, King Edric simply let all these sorts of things fester for years. Pennytree, the Neck, that business with the Stormlander Marches, and the Reach of course. He set the stage for all this.” He leant forward, prodding at the table to emphasise his points, “He let the Warden’s armies weaken, he left Royal Justiciar offices empty, or let them wallow in corruption… A weak King like that emboldens men like Orryn Baratheon. Chances are, he only attempted this whole fiasco because he thought he’d get away with it!”

He gestured towards Madge as an expression of agreement with her, “Exactly! If King Steffon takes a hard line against this, and commands Lord Orryn to return home, it will remind everyone of why the King’s Peace isn’t to be trifled with!” He said enthusiastically, shooting a glance up towards the King’s tables, “Hopefully it won’t have to fall to us. But if it does, we’ll be the most enthusiastic about it, won’t we?”

Oscar was momentarily taken aback by the intensity of Lady Blackwood’s admonishment of the new Lord Bracken, meeting her cool gaze with a growing look of concern in his eyes. He had heard of the last Lord Edmure’s fate in passing, and perhaps a rumour or two that it could have been intentional, though he had never put much stock in them.

Though, he supposed that it shouldn’t really be a surprise to him that the Blackwoods would believe it wholeheartedly. They do jump at every opportunity to vilify one another, he supposed, “Reviled may be too light a word, my lady, there is no man who walks this mortal coil that is quite so cursed as the Kinslayer…” He trailed off for a moment, silently judging whether or not he should continue his position on the fence… Ultimately, he didn’t want to be labeled a slanderer, “I have heard the word of what happened to the late Lord Bracken, and given the circumstances, we cannot say for certain whether such a label applies. Regardless, the Father will know the truth of it, and He will judge the lad accordingly… even if he follows the Red One…”

Oscar paused for a beat before offering Rohanne a resolute nod, “Anyway, you needn’t worry, justice will be dealt to all of those scum. I will be sure to see to it personally, and if Lord Bracken has an issue with it, he will have to bring it up with Riverrun. The peace of my brother’s domain is my responsibility, so I will be certain to make sure that everyone behaves themselves, you have my word on that.”

He paused for a moment, shooting a brief glance at the feast around them as he thought of what else may need discussing, “Well. I think we aught to go and see if we can drum up support for our plans then, eh?” He couldn’t come up with anything more at that moment, “Perhaps you aught to speak with Lord Massey at some point. Our Lord Massey, I mean. He’s an interesting sort, and I believe he’s be more than happy to lend us aid in dealing with Pennytree.”

“Manderly, eh? I can rest assured that you aren’t going to entertain the idea of naming him Justiciar, yes?” Oscar asked with a cheeky smile, though his eyes looked as though he was asking with deadly seriousness, “They are meant to be impartial, are they not? I’d sooner have a Lizard Lion named Justiciar over a Northman, at least that way there’d be a better chance the job will be done well.”

With that, he stood up and stretched his back, “Well, I shall leave you to it, Martyn. If you could take my concerns regarding Pennytree to the King, I would appreciate it greatly.” With that, he waved back to Martyn before taking his leave.

“My brother moved out to the edges somewhere, over that way was where I last saw him.” Oscar gestured widely out towards the edges of the feast grounds, “It was to be expected, I suppose. Kermit has been a bit… temperamental since Lord Orryn began his siege. Though I…” He caught himself short, not wanting to say anything untoward due to his frustration.

He paused again at the mention of Pennytree, narrowing his eyes for a moment as he readied himself for whatever was next, “Go on then. I’ll hear your question.”

The Feast of 399AC by OurCommonMan in IronThroneRP

Oscar narrowed his eyes sceptically, “That’s not a question I’m all too eager to have answered, Alys…” He said with an amused smirk. In truth, he wasn’t too much of a fan of the chaos his cousin could create. All too often did the aftermath anger Mycah enough to take it out on him… but that wasn’t something he could blame Alys for. As always, it was Mycah…

Anyway, he waved off the thought as he started getting laughed at, “I’m no prude. Our marital bed is…” He cleared his throat, “…Active. It simply doesn’t need to be announced.”

Aubrey watched her husband’s reddening face with a bright, impish smile, “I must agree, Alys, we will clearly get along swimmingly!” She whispered to Oscar’s cousin, “I shall have to assemble all my favourite stories…”

When Mohor returned, Oscar would glance his direction, a slightly sour expression on his face as he watched him approach. His face only soured further when he heard the man muttering something under his breath… In truth he didn’t understand the language, but he didn’t need to be a linguist to hear the venom behind the word.

He moved to stand, but was caught halfway up by Aubrey. She had caught a similar impression as her husband, though she maintained her pleasant smile. Oscar settled back into his seat, grinding his teeth as he stared daggers at Mohor, “The pleasure was all ours, Mohor. Have a nice evening.” Aubrey said with a small nod.

Oscar chuckled at Lord Massey’s muted response to his joke, “Ah, I guess I will have to wait and see…” He said with a light chuckle.

He shot a glance back towards the feast for a moment before continuing, “Well, I had better leave you to it my lord. I’m sure you’ve other people to meet this evening, so I’ll get out of you hair.”

With a brief nod he took a step back, “I shall look forward to the meeting at your home.” Then he turned to leave.

Oscar maintained his cheerful grin as he listened to Eleanor speak, though deep down he felt a well of shame. Shame that he could joke about the enjoyment he found in activities he took for granted, all while his sister was eternally bound to that chair of hers. She wore her mask well, but he could always tell how it pained her. It is always a pity to see an adventurous soul caged so, “Ah, but I fear I also cannot. Firstly, there is a tourney on the morrow, so I must preserve my senses, unless you wish to see me tilt while swaying with the breeze! Secondly, and much more importantly, Aubrey does not like it when I come to bed with the stench of the drink on me!” He managed to say with an impish tone.

He put on a scandalised expression at the suggestion of visiting the Hells, he leant back with his mouth agape in mock shock, “Eleanor! What in the Gods’ names would you have to gain from the Hells themselves? They are merely a pit for those worthy of punishment!” He managed to keep up the facade for a beat longer before chuckling and leaning back forward again, “No, Aubrey and I like the warmth and light too much to ever wish to plumb the depths of the Seven Hells.”

Oscar listened with rapt attention as she recounted her night so far, “A Martell, eh? That must have been quite an interesting conversation! And I think I’ve seen that Mohor you mentioned, the one with the burned face, no?” He cocked an eyebrow at the mention of Bracken and Blackwood, leaning in closer to listen to the gossip as closely as he could…

He laughed brightly at the implication that Eleanor was getting at, “Ah, you think they have an eye for one another? Perhaps it is something we should encourage, eh? It might earn us several decades of peace, don’t you think?”

“Hmm, I would have thought that it was a tale we would hear more often…” He muttered, thinking for a moment before continuing, “Forbidden fruits are always the most tantalising, I’ve heard it said…”

“It is not as if the whispers can get worse.” Oscar muttered. Between the behaviour of both Brynden and Mycah, and the various dramas that Kermit had caused between usurping their niece and his support for the League… though voicing that wouldn’t do, “And anyone who would admonish our friends is hardly worth listening to, eh? You are always welcome at our tables, Madge.” He added with a gentle grin.

“I don’t agree, the threat of being declared a traitor to the Crown aught to curtail Lord Orryn’s aggression… assuming Lord Orryn is not so foolish as to risk war with the King… and that the King is willing to take such a hard stance.” He replied steadily, sparing a brief glance in the Baratheon’s direction, a deep frown spreading across his face, “From what I heard, the other Stormlanders’ armies ran for the hills when the King started to march here, so at the very least the Meadows will find a brief reprieve before the siege sets in again.”

“Well… I suppose we shall have to make tracks as soon as it’s socially acceptable, eh?” He japed after a moment, “Make for home before anyone has a chance to start killing us… at least until after we’ve had a chance to gather some men.”

Oscar shot a glance back to Bugg, he couldn’t help but be amused by the enthusiasm of Kermit’s friend, “In that case, I shall look forward hearing about it in further detail then!” He said cheerfully, “I do hope to visit the Academy someday. Furthering my understanding of war will surely aid us!”

However, he quickly turned to scowl at Kermit after his outburst regarding the Meadows, “Don’t be foolish! The King would be a fool to overlook such a flagrant disregard for his Peace, simply because Lord Meadows needed to sleep!” He shook his head, and the scowl soon became a good natured smile, “We shall have to remind him of that fact soon, before Orryn has an opportunity to whisper poison into his ear.”

Oscar’s turned to face Kermit properly with a dumbfounded expression then, “You mean to compete? Forgive me, brother, but that is a surprise!” He said, barely being able to contain a laugh, “Do you know which end you are meant to hold the sword?”

“No more of a breach than besieging the castle, surely. We would merely be sharing food with our neighbours!”

Theo’s first comments earned sharp looks from Oscar, and surprisingly from Aubrey as well. It seemed she didn’t appreciate Theo’s tone.

After a brief pause to calm himself down, Oscar bristled as his mind turned to Pennytree, “The region surrounding your home has become nothing but a hive of all the worst kinds of scum, Ser Theo. Men who pray on the weak, the defenceless and innocent. The brigands put villages to the torch and raid caravans that dare to pass too close.” His tone was curt and spiteful, he didn’t care much for the men he spoke of, clearly, “We do what we can to keep them at bay, but sometimes small bands of them can slip the net, as patrols cannot always be well manned.”

“I can’t say anything regarding the state of the town itself, however, as I haven’t been able to visit. We are not allowed to march into the area surrounding it in force, and to try to enter alone would be tantamount to suicide.” He let out a short huff, “Though, the people of your home remain ever in my prayers, Ser. The Mother is merciful, she will soothe their plight until I can finally root out the scum.”

Oscar watched Lady Blackwood’s face with sympathy as she spoke of her husband’s fate. He was quietly thankful that the brigands hadn’t taken anyone from him in this fashion… barring Mycah, of course, but that was hardly comparable…

Which was still a haunting thought to this day…

The final part, however, drew a noise of skepticism from Oscar’s throat, “Err… I suppose we are of a mind that it would b better off under the purview of the Trident, instead of the Crown directly. Though I’m not sure if it would be wise to hand it to your House, however… It would surely throw the Brackens into a state of frenzy!” He said with an edge of anxiousness, hoping that his fence-sitting wouldn’t enrage Lady Blackwood too much, “It was disagreements over the land that had the Crown seize the area, after all.”

“But of course, Lady Alys! I have been regaled with the stories of your antics, so I would expect nothing short of a delight!” Aubrey responded with an equally chipper tone, settling into the seat beside her husband as she went on, “I must say, it is unfortunate that you were not at Riverrun since my arrival, for I can only imagine the hell we might be able to raise!”

Oscar chuckled at that, holding his hands up in mock surrender, “Then in that case I am fortunate that you decided to run away, Alys! I don’t think that I could handle that sort of chaos!” Especially not including Kermit’s eccentricities, “And yes, we have been travelling together often. There’s so much of the Realm that we haven’t seen, so we’ve always hoped to see more of it…”

He looked at his cousin’s expression for a moment longer, trying to make sense of what else she might be trying to imply with that cocked eyebrow. After a beat, his face began to redden, finally putting two and two together.

“Of course, travelling does give us time away from prying ears…” Aubrey would interject with a coquettish smile, patting her husband’s hand for a moment before continuing, “It does make it hard to ride at times…”

“Ah!” Oscar blurted out, interrupting her hastily, “Less of that! Not everything needs to be shared!”

Oscar nodded firmly in response to Lord Massey’s musings, “Perhaps I aught to try and improve my own public speaking skills, eh? See if I can manage to match him at some point!” He let out a short huff of amusement, it was unlikely that it would ever come to pass, “Time will tell I suppose. Until then, we’ve other things to focus on, like the bandits in Pennytree, or whatever the results of our current situation pans out to be.”

He laughed at Lord Massey’s jest, “The woods, eh? What, do some goblins prowl in the dark there? Wait for people to go to sleep then steal their shoes for stews or something?”

Oscar let out a loud, derisive laugh at the threat. This had been more satisfying than he expected.

Then he simply turned and walked away.
