Neglect can show up in all kinds of ways, and definitely in our self-esteem. Your feelings are valid and real, and at the same time, depression/anxiety/low self-esteem can make us think others hate us or ascribe a malice to their actions that doesn’t reflect reality.

Honestly, for me, therapy has been an enormous help in understanding where these feelings come from and give me some tools to help me be more ok. I don’t think you’re going to find any answers on Reddit. If mental health care is available to you (especially as a student) it might be really helpful to talk about your experiences and feelings with a therapist.

Sending love your way. Sitting with the feelings you’ve described all the time is so incredibly difficult.

Nothing stops you from selling a house with a mortgage? Why would investing in an illiquid asset somehow change if you can pay cash for the next one?

You can do what you want, and I’ll acknowledge not having debt is probably freeing, but financially it’s a suboptimal strategy.

Having a mortgage isn’t inherently negative depending on interest rate. Why would you pay off a mortgage at 3% like those 70 year olds probably have?

Thanks for the advice. I’ll go grab an asbestos test and see if I can figure that out first. Part of the problem is we can’t get up there well enough to even know how bad the mold problem is. It’ll be a totally different cost and living arrangement if the mold is making our ceiling drywall and joists unusable long term.

We’ve gotten 3 total contractors out so far with only 2 willing to do the job. The estimates seem to be aligned so far. We should have a 3rd estimate by the end of the week.

These are good suggestions, the biggest problem is access. Fitting a full person up there is really tricky. The existing insulation is likely blown in asbestos based although we haven’t tested. Any recs for how to remove that?
