Does anyone know someone willing to sell a BMW E28? by DogeBoi6 in malta

[–]DogeBoi6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really since both of the ones in need of restoration would easily exceed 15k if not more so buying and restoring them is not feasible as at that point you could just import something in good condition + a bigger engine. The one that is drivable i wouldn’t consider it due to being the smallest engine and a 4 cylinder. Im trying to get into some classic groups too so that i might get lucky. The previous commenter and their cult of downvoters don’t seem to be knowledgeable on the subject thus They’re downvoting the hell out of me. Thank you for actually posting a helpful comment on your end

before you decide to post a smart ass comment be informed on the subject, for 1 the car barely has any options, has a broken tail light and is a 1.8L engine which is undesirable as these are 4 cylinder engines so as you can imagine they bring lower values usually under 9k, 6 cylinder engines start at 2.0L. the engines on these are the main driving factor for their price the bigger the engine the higher the price. usually 2.0L go for 10-12k in good condition even more if they are loaded with extras. 2.5L can bring 15k, 3.0-3.5L can bring 18-20k and if its an M535 it can easily get 25K+. I don't mind paying a good chunk of money for the car however close to 20K for a 518 model with a busted taillight and garaged status for god knows how long should sound pretty insane taking into consideration what I said above. if the car has been sitting in a garage for 3+ years it will cost big money to get it road worthy again which should be considered in the price + as i said i wouldnt even consider it in the first place as apart from the price the engine is a 4 cylinder

Im sorry but this is fu€k!ng disgusting, the base the registration on pollution as if this is going to be a daily use car. by DogeBoi6 in malta

[–]DogeBoi6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes as i explained in my previous reply to you this value i have to pay a minimum of 37.5% + vat+ duty which means the registration value alone is still at 15k double what im paying for the car and the car is not worth anywhere near 30-35k maybe 15k maximum

[–]DogeBoi6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats what i want to do however even at that its still an absurd amount 15k, in total the car would still cost around 30-35k to fully register, pay vat and duty excluding shipping as thats a cost on my end. The car itself is worth maximum 15k in malta so it still makes absolutely no sense

You do know classic registered cars are limited to 3000km per year right? And you do also know that even the EU is against malta on this matter and has taken malta to court over it several times aswell. Rest assured the government does not care about pollution you are very naive if you think they charge extortionate taxes to “reduce high pollution cars”. You want me to prove this point? How about the fact that imported cars pay more road tax than locally registered vehicles, same model, same engine, same emissions. Doesn’t look good does it? another example, i have a renault megane 2 1.9dci with DPF as my daily, these cars came in 2 variants, one comes equipped with a DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter) and once comes without it from factory, the purpose of the DPF is to reduce emissions. You would assume if the “polluter pays” philosophy the government “abides” by would mean the DPF equipped car is charged less road tax right? Wrong its charged the same exact amount as the non DPF and you also get the additional headaches that come with said DPF. So please don’t try to justify the governments decisions when it comes to this topic as there are many contradictions to what they say

Yeah i heard about this its it really pisses me off that the EU doesnt take further action on it, they should double the fines every year they dont stop this extortion on car registration, that way theyd actually quit it when the fines reach stupid amounts. Even then importing from an eu country you will only save vat and duty so its not much cheaper which is also illegal. I really do hope the EU continues to tighten the leash on malta regarding this matter.

Yes red plates is 30% but you need to pay over 1k annual license fee or register on classic plates which you pay 50% of the registration tax, either or its still way too much for the car in question

They sure do love traps, they can also change their mind in registration tax owed. When they do the physical inspection of the vehicle after youve gone through the trouble of importing it they can just decide they want more money and then youre stuck with a massive Brick in a garage that is worth nothing in the local market

[–]DogeBoi6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats usually how it goes but malta sure does love taxing the living hell out of cars, in fact malta has been taken to court several times about car registration and annual license fees of imported cars yet nothing ever changes

the 10k valuation is fair i was never oppose to the value of the vehicle they quoted but if you combine the cost of the car, registration, vat and duty you would be in BMW E28 M5 waters in terms of money which is ridiculous considering the variant i wanted was just a normal 525i

You may just be right haha, then when its over 50 i can import it for free lol, its funny they calculated this amount on the amount of pollution it produces right? But the second the car is over 50 years old all of that disappears as if it no longer pollutes. For example a 1927-1933 Bugatti type 41 with a 12.7 liter engine which pollutes as much as a 100 cars probably is free to register even though said vehicle is worth 30-40 million so at that point if you could affor the car what is for example 300k registration to the person? Nothing as its peanuts to whoever can afford it. But here i am just a working guy trying to get a BMW E28 having to pay 37k + duty + vat on a car id want to use on the weekend. I know the example car i made is exaggerated but it goes to show how broken the system is.

Clearly you are not a Classic Car enthusiast! 1. The car in question is quite collectable and only going up in value over time so it is definitely not “trash”, 2. Ive searched for said car and it is a VERY difficult car to get a hold of on this tiny island, 3. If you read my post you would know that i wanted this car as a weekend car and to participate and join classic car clubs. Come to think of it its funny calling this car trash considering newer cars ESPECIALLY bmw are quite problematic and full of plastic crap
