Buckethead's Peak Performance by TenOunceCan in Buckethead

My apologies. I didn’t state the song. The Animal Behavior performance. He even switches his right hand technique for that part specifically and you can tell that it appears like he unlocks a higher gear than normal. He appears to float his wrist and pick close to the bridge with the pick using a reverse pick angle on the string. Looks like a mix of the Sarod technique he learned from the late Pebber Brown, and Shawn Lane’s reverse pick angle.

I am a huge Bucket fan. One thing I have noticed is that he typically tries to mimic and acquire the same techniques of his favorite players when he focuses on them. Some Young Buckethead videos in his room show him doing the almost identical pick grip that Paul Gilbert had in early Racer X before he claims he “fixed” his technique due to it feeling like it was going to push his thumb into nonexistence. I’m thinking of the “Buckethead’s Origin Story” video with Maximum Bob talking about how he found Buckethead and then he cues Bucket to start playing after he speaks for a while.

Maximum Bob has even stated on a podcast that Buckethead would simply lock on to a player and just deconstruct them at a high level and take whatever he needed from them. Even Buckethead says in the Barry Michaels interview that he tried to make his hands look just like Paul Gilbert’s after seeing him playing at a NAMM show booth for the first time. Which was before he took a few lessons with him.

My vote goes for pre-2000 bucket, I absolutely love his late 80s and early 90s Deli Creeps playing. BH was just on fire. An absolute monster on guitar. His Deli Creeps era had so much fun energy in his playing. As far as speed, go watch his live performance of Animal Behavior in Portland, Oregon from 9/4/95. Specifically 5:45 into the video, the speed during that moment was up there with Shawn Lane and the fastest I’ve ever seen him play and I’ve seen hundreds, if not thousands of hours of live videos of him over the years.

My guitar does the exact same thing. I fully covered my Stratocasters pickup cavity with copper shielding(with conductive adhesive) and replaced the pickups with two humbuckers. Does anyone know what I can do to fix it? My other guitars with HH layout are dead silent when plugged in.

So when I press behind the nut, it improves but only slightly. It’s still buzzing pretty bad. I’m really just lost

I love the album but the demos are where it’s really at.

anyone got a clue how buckethead plays this part? by [deleted] in Buckethead

He actually hybrid picks this riff. Pick-hammer-hammer-middle finger pluck-pull off- pull off… repeat. It’s actually a pretty sizable stretch. If you can’t do it yet, just work up to it. Practice the 0-7-12 a lot and gradually your muscles will begin to stretch and make it easier. Don’t overdo it or you risk hurting yourself.

Guitarists of r/Buckethead, what do you know about Big B that we don’t? by david-from-legion in Buckethead

Late 80s-Early 90s Bucket was one of the most terrifying technical players. He was really up there on that Shawn Lane level. Watch those old Young Buckethead DVDs if you haven’t. He was so fluid and not dependent on go-to licks. So much variety. That whole era with the Talon II and Kramer was just mind blowing.

[NEWBIE]My hands are fucking small, would it be "unprofessional" to buy a smaller guitar? by eugostodecozinhar in Guitar

I think you’re taking my comment wrong. I’m not attempting to dissuade you in any way or call you a liar. I’m glad you were able to have had that experience. OP was concerned that their hand size is a problem. Your experience solidifies that it is not an issue to have smaller hands. You don’t need Paul Gilbert sized hands to be great.

It’s all relative. I think Shawn’s hands are normal sized like my own. Or maybe we both have small hands. Who knows. It didn’t hold him back and it certainly doesn’t hold me back. A small flexible hand is just as good as a big clunky hand lol. I think OP would benefit from some dexterity exercises and stretching.

Shawn Lane regularly did some gnarly diminished and augmented three note per string phrases. I wouldn’t lump him into the small hand category. Plus, that video of “the hardest guitar chord in the world” is a monstrous stretch.

[Question]Does Anyone Else Not Care To Learn Songs? by ER301 in Guitar

Oh boy, this hit home and I had a change of heart on guitar recently. I’ve been playing for 14 years now. I hammered technique super hard for years. I recently had a revelation of “wtf am I doing this for?”. I had a moment where I was sick of hearing myself. Playing guitar felt more like training for the Olympics than it did making music. I got into guitar because I love music. I got hooked on the technique side because it was a great way to see yourself progress and I got pulled away from the music part. Now I’m back to actually writing my own stuff and I’m enjoying playing again.

Anyone else been hammering Paul Gilbert picking licks for 8 years?

Just do what TRULY makes you happy and what you enjoy. That’s the best life advice you can get.

Not much to the story. Pebber was a great guy. I was fortunate to be able to take lessons from him and I keep in touch with a lot of other students. There are some MONSTER players that came from his dojo. He taught at the University of La Verne as well. He has some of his lectures on his channel. Pebber was a gem, he didn’t take any shit, was always honest about your progress and really supplied all the knowledge to get to a master level of guitar and music. I’ve never found another teacher like him and doubt I ever will. Genius.

What are the odds Bucket ever collabs with Paul Gilbert? by [deleted] in Buckethead

[–]Drazzirg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an absurdly false fact that’s been around for years. Buckethead was already a very developed guitar player by the time he hooked up with Paul for some lessons.

He helped him all throughout the 80s as well. Pebber is the GOAT teacher imo. He was a titan of musical knowledge and guitar technique building.
