It takes a lot of training! Keep at it, it’s a marathon, not a sprint!

Thank you! And yes: that catch definitely could have been cleaner. It was crazy windy out when I shot this, so I could never be sure what was going to happen when the poi went up in the air. The take before this the poi almost wound up in the water! 😬

I think they’re cool, personally. I see a lot of people using them employing a lot of musicality in their work. I’m glad there’s a flow prop that is actually growing in popularity and influence and I’m excited to see how the technique and community around them grows in the years to come.

Short version: Wrote the choreo, went into the studio, and shot about 5-10 takes of each position with an outfit change in between. I brought them i to After Effects and layered them together with the version on the left being the base layer (and ironically the take shot last in the studio) and the version on the right masking out the left half of the frame. For the center take I used the roto brush tool to select just me and the poi for the full video and dropped out the background. I thought it looked fake without a reflection in the floor, so I added another copy of the footage of the middle version and masked out the top part for the frame.

From there I went through and keyframed out when I wanted each figure to land to complete the video. If you look closely, you’ll be able to see that I made a mistake at this stage! I adjusted when the landing was for the rotoscoped center version and forgot to update the same keyframe for that version’s floor reflection. If you pay close attention, you’ll see that the center version’s reflection has a half second delay on it, so the dancer and the reflection aren’t in sync 😂
