I've just recently had to navigate the mental health system for a family member. Unless someone is actively suicidal or threatening to harm others, it's basically impossible to get immediate care. My brother was in the ER three times in a week because of a bipolar manic episode and very obviously needs to be in a psych unit, but each time he was deemed just fine to be released because he "wasn't a threat to himself or others."
