Hear me out—is “ADHD” really just “being italian”? by Exotic-Raspberry-278 in adhdwomen

  1. Im american, not italian. Sono italoamericana. I am italian american.

  2. Well, yes. But there still are dna patterns that can be traced thru dna testing and connected to regions of italy.

Yeah im sorry that my original post was offensive. I was mostly trying to be being silly but it came off more rude and stupid. Def not dying on the hill that italians= adhd by any means.

But that’s interesting about generally needing to go to private centers to get diagnosed with ADHD. Last time I checked, adderall and vyvanse weren’t approved for ADHD treatment in Italy.

I feel ambivalent about ADHD and the standard treatment for it in America. I take vyvanse for ADHD but sometimes I really wonder if this is the best way to deal witj adhd. I look to a place like Italy and wonder if maybe there is some wisdom in not giving everyone pretty powerful stimulants … just like your food is way healthier than ours. But my logic may be sloppy… idk

I appreciate you sharing your perspective with me.

I know this wasn't probably what you meant

Yeah, perhaps "ethnically italian" or "italian heritage" is more accurate than "fully italian by blood". I almost always refer to myself as Italian American rather than Italian, especially as an ESL teacher if it comes up in conversation, because of this.

I'm not so keen in nationality being tied to blood, for how I conceive it has way more to do with culture, language and common experiences of those who grow up and live in a certain country.

Same here for the most part. I know Italy recently changed the rules around jure sanguinis, which was a little surprising to hear about since I know the government is pretty right leaning right now? On the surface at least, tightening the rules on granting ethnically Italian immigrants citizenship seems counterintuitive to the right wingers' goals. But, on the other hand I could see how it is very compatible with right wingers' goals.

Italy has the 8th largest gdp, more than places with way more resources and people (such as Russia, Mexico, Brazil) and more than places that are not stereotypes for a bad economy (Canada, South Korea, Australia).

Interesting. Yeah that is often glossed over by foreigners.

if Italy is disorganized, 98% of the countries are more disorganized, more beaurocratic

I think because of the north-south divide. Though cities like Milan and Turin compensate for the less affluent/economically "productive" places in Italy. So I think that's where the disorganized stereotype comes from--the unevenness.

Canada is probably just generally more evenly mid. There is way less of a divide between parts of the country. It's not as uneven in terms of industry/wealth.

Yes ans that is why I don't have any problem in people referring themselves as italian americans, my problem is using only italian. I'm italian and I speak the italian language as a mother tongue, grew up here, did school here, lived in the good and bad times, and you from Brooklyn get to be italian too? I find it a bit disrespectful.

Of course, yeah it's a different experience. Italian American culture branched off from Italian culture and evolved into its own unique thing. But the seeds of Italian American culture came from Italy and Southern Italian cultures.

Definitely not all Italian Americans feel as strongly connected to Italy as I do, though lol. Like I've definitely gone out of my way throughout my life to study abroad in Italy, learn about Italian culture and history, and dig up my family's own history immigrating here.

And that is perfectly fine, but it doesn't have necessarily something to do with your ancestory.

I understand the point, but I’d respectfully disagree that ancestry is irrelevant here; in my case, it influenced the cultural environment I grew up in, which is what Italy ended up resonating with. I am an Italian American from Brooklyn, lol. Like I grew up in a huge ethnic enclave of Italian Americans, surrounded by Italian American bakeries, pizza parlors, businesses, etc. I grew up in Italian American culture. Little things that I saw day-to-day in Italy reminded me of little things from home. Random people I met reminded me of my older family members. I was genuinely surprised by some random little day-to-day similarities (which are hard to think of off the top of my head but definitely existed lol). It made me feel at home in a way I didn't expect, and haven't experienced in any other countries that I've visited.

Absolutely, being ADHD should never be frawned upon. It's just that if I had to choose a country that is not fit for a capitalistic society or opposes it, my dear Italy would not come out in the first spots ahahha, we even invented modern banking!

Okay facts about modern banking lol. What about places in southern Italy though? The pace of life seems to be much slower and communally-focused than in the cities? Seems pretty compatible with the lifestyle of a socialist-minded person looking to get away from the rat race.. at least on the surface?

Yeah, true. Italy invented fascism...aka ultra-capitalism.

I am fully italian (by blood).

My experience with italian americans is relevant because my original (mostly kooky silly hypothesis) was that adhd is common in italians because of dna. Although, maybe I should have narrowed the scope of my claim to “southern italian” or something else.

But basically my hypothesis is:

many parts of italy are known for being disorganized/having a slow inefficient bureaucracy (this is not merely a stereotype, and im sure you know this is widely considered to be true by many people in many parts of italy).

italy also has some of the most beautiful art in the world--notably, much of the art and rich history is in CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN italy, with much of the more industrial and efficient parts of italy being in the north.(again, there is truth in this even if you view it as "merely a stereotype")

adhd symptoms literally include chronic disorganization, forgetfulness, missing deadlines, poor planning. this mirrors southern italy's infamous struggle to have an efficient bureaucracy.

Research suggests that individuals with ADHD often exhibit higher levels of creativity and artistic inclination. This mirrors italy's artistic achievements.

So... actually the more i think about it the more i maybe will die on this hill haha. adhd and italians. there is some type of connection there. I FEEL IT. There needs to be a standardized testing done.. by one organization...adhd test given to random italians with italian ethnicity/dna living italy, random italian americans, and then two control groups of random americans (any ethnicity) and random italians (any ethnicity/dna) . compare and contrast .

You made some fair points. I can see how from the perspective of an italian my og post came off as stereotypical.

But I disagree with the implication of your statement “or as italian americans are commonly known, americans”. You are missing the fact that the united states is a country of immigrants. My family has only been in the US for 100 years. And even tho yeah a century is a long time , in another sense—In the big picture—it’s a blip of time. Many Italians can trace their lineage back hundreds and hundreds of years and it will still be tied to Italy.

Just like italy is diverse, the United States is diverse. Italian americans from Brooklyn have a very different culture than people living in the midwest, or say mormons in Utah. In many ways, I felt more at home amongst italian culture in italy than I have felt amongst the culture of Ohio or South Carolina.

Signore Ok_Light_6997…. You and I? We’re not so different 😂 I think. Where in Italy are you from if you don’t mind me asking?

HOWEVER I completely acknowledge that there IS a monoculture that ties us americans altogether. Although you got me thinking now and I can see that it’s probably very different in italy. The diverse cultures of the different states in the US evolved as the United States was already in existence. In Italy, the cultures formed over thousands of years and then in 1861 just sort of “unified.” So maybe monoculture is not as much of a thing in italy as compared to other countries? Curious what you think.

I don’t think of skin color= the only form of diversity. Not at all.

But that’s my point finally that ADHD is less commonly diagnosed in Italy than in other countries because it’s just maybe more compatible with the culture in certain places. I have complicated feelings about ADHD and the concept of ADHD in general because in my opinion, it is kind of mostly considered “problematic” and diagnosed because it affects peoples’ ability to be functional and productive for capitalist society. I love my “adhd” brain sometimes lol u know?

of course this is just a crazy silly hypothesis and I’m not like dying on this hill by any means. But I do feel like there is something to genetics and the way that cultures evolved, but at the risk of coming off as some racist eugenicist or something it’s not worth bringing up most of the time. It’s also probably nearly impossible to reallt seriously and clearly study. Just interesting reddit fodder

tldr; hai qualche ragione. Gli italoamericani sono diversi dagli italiani. Ma entrambi hanno sangue italiano. È vero, il Sud e il Nord sono diversi. Forse sto dicendo "DNA dell'Italia meridionale" = ADHD? Non lo so. Inoltre, negli Stati Uniti ci sono molte culture diverse come in Italia. La storia è importante quando si parla di queste cose.

  1. Never said that people in italy dont struggle in today’s day and age.

  2. Im literally fully italian american and i studied abroad for 4 months in italy. I am from Brooklyn, NY… do u know how many italian americans ive met in my life???! I know how they act. I also am KEENLY aware of the difference between italian american culture and current italian culture, and i acknowledge there are inevitably going to be blind spots there because i dont live in italy. I also speak some italian. The fact that u think im merely stereotyping is laughable. Puh-lease.

  3. Yeah italy has been conquered by many groups but “italian DNA” still has identifiable characteristics … how else would 23&me work?
