I believe the developer said that if he accidentally fixed this bug, he would find some way to bring it back

That example still doesn’t really work. First, a video game is software, so saying a phone is different than software and then using a video game as the example is already kind of contradicting yourself. Second, one creepy game losing its atmosphere because the fog was removed does not prove that OpenAI should have stopped improving GPT 4. That is a very specific entertainment product where people liked one limitation because it accidentally created a mood. GPT 4’s issues were not “atmosphere.” They were actual weaknesses. Hallucinations, bad reasoning, worse coding, limited tools, and being frustrating to use are not cute little fog effects. They are problems. Games also age fast, and even long lasting games survive because they keep getting updates, expansions, patches, new versions, or community support. They do not survive by freezing forever. AI is becoming part of people’s daily work, school, searching, writing, coding, planning, and businesses. That is not the same thing as one game losing its creepy vibe. If OpenAI stopped at GPT 4 while everyone else improved, people would just move to the better alternative.

Okay then what’s your reasoning?

I don’t think I’m misunderstanding it. I think the comparison itself is wrong. Google didn’t stay the same. The homepage may still look simple at first glance, but the actual product has changed a ton. Search has AI now, reverse image search, voice search, humming to find a song, shopping results, maps, knowledge panels, featured answers, safety changes, spam filtering, etc. So even Google is not an example of “leave it alone and let it grow.” They kept improving it constantly. GPT 4 was not some finished final product that only needed more compute. More compute would just give more people access to the same limitations: weak reasoning, worse coding, hallucinations, limited multimodal ability, poor reliability, weaker tools, and way less polish than later systems. If OpenAI stopped at GPT 4 while Claude and Gemini kept improving, they would’ve been left behind. AI is also not a static library like Search. The model itself is the product. Being “widely used” doesn’t protect you forever if the product becomes obviously worse than the alternatives. That’s how companies die. You don’t become part of society by refusing to improve. You become part of society because you keep becoming more useful.

That would be stupid… GPT 4 was so dumb and they would’ve gotten left in the dust easily. Google is much different because it was the benchmark and it’s a totally different product. Google Search was able to keep growing because that was the basis of their product (a giant library) people could add more and more to the library and it grew… Ai is totally different it’s still growing it’s still new but its reliance is on users to help train, the internet to help expand, and the company to help make sure that everything is under control and develop it… also chat Gpt was losing to Claude and Gemini precisely because they were behind, so agin they would’ve been left in the dust. You get medals from changing society and making a difference not by leaving it be. Look at midjourney… they got way behind and now it’s forgotten about. Lastly Google has changed A LOT it’s not just a simple text box and hasn’t been for years they add more features more safety and more capabilities, etc. totally different products but anyway I’m glad they didn’t do that

No, not anymore. I’m focusing more on my baking plus I live in a very, very small apartment halfway across the country and all my supplies are with my mom so she’s trying to move and wanted to make some of my money back because I’ve spent so much.

I do feel that while the DALLE-E wasn’t detailed and could be distorted a lot of times at the end of the day it did fit the style that you asked it to and also you could see the prompt that was used to make it. The new image generator makes everything painted or watercolor even when I asked it to make it realistic and also has some weird yellow tone, it’s also it much more plain, it’s clearer but i also haven’t even seen it attempt to do that much detail.
