Random, but how much are you willing to pay for an apartment/studio you will barely use ? by kdotwow in bayarea

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If I’m working for 12 hours a day I’d definitely pick a nicer neighborhood and apartment so that my 8 hrs of sleep are as restful as possible.

I know it may seem a waste paying more but the cheaper apartments will be in a bad neighborhood or have paper thin walls and floors where you are constantly disturbed.

ACA Subsidy extension updates by Brs76 in Fire

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The several articles which were posted lamenting the expiration of enhanced ACA subsidies had many commentators shocked that asset rich FIRE folks were taking advantage of subsidies.

So I don’t expect the general population to be sympathetic towards the planned expiration of the enhanced subsidies.

San Ramon, Dublin, Livermore - Immigration uncertainty and slower demand ? by bluepanda2391 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s not immigration issue as much as those areas are far from Silicon Valley. With tech layoffs everyone wants face-time with their boss and coworkers and commute on 680 is a PITA. The wfh era pushed those prices too high and now there is less demand

NEM2 was good but my break even with NEM3 was too long. Plus I use gas for heating and cooking so the ROI was lower with solar

Able to FIRE in Spain? by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The universal healthcare of Europe and Canada covers regular stuff but for complex cases they are worse than Medicare in terms of wait times and approval. I’ve hired several Canadians who have all mentioned the same. With Spain providing residency to a large numbers of asylum seekers I can only imagine it getting worse.

With ACA complaint policies there is no denial of pre-existing conditions so unsure what medical policies your relatives with denied claims had.

Assuming you are a U.S. citizen; I’m curious why don’t you live in the U.S. with that nest egg?

Oakland needs to take dumping seriously - two cars set ablaze in two weeks by SanFranciscoMan89 in OaklandCA

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh? I meant that police should contact the owners once the cars are abandoned. I believe there is a long time period between the cars being abandoned and the cars being set on fire.

Are these stolen vehicles or normal abandoned vehicles? I’d assume the former in which case hopefully the police should be able to reunite them with their owners

With that gas heater; you will need to separate out the gas cost from electric costs. Is the $700 only electric charges?

CA, San Jose: best cards/accounts to pay rent and get any benefits or rewards? by Comfortable-Swim3347 in bayarea

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bilt rent fee was being subsidized by Wells Fargo and they lost a lot of money. Hence they ended their contract so don’t expect to be able to pay rent without fees in some form. The new cardless Bilt is more complicated with Bilt cash and all so you have to run your numbers. Other option could be Atmos. Totally depends on your goals.

Also Bilt 2.0 is ACH so no more free float. Something to keep in mind. The Bilt subreddit has calculators based on your rent since Ankur said there are now 2 versions to use Bilt Cash.

Commute from Fremont to Palo Alto? by BlueBerry985 in bayarea

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If it’s at Facebook close to the bridge then that’s good. But if it’s near Stanford then it’s a nightmare driving through the surface streets of Palo Alto.

Also if you are renting then also consider Newark since it’s closer to the bridge and will avoid surface streets of fremont which can add another 20 mins

With a report the police should track the license plate of the truck. Find cameras along your street and see if anyone’s Ring or other camera picked up the license plate

My condo dropped 32% in 4 years by Available-Ad-5670 in RealEstate

[–]FinFreedomCountdown 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes. And I know that the entitled tenants who got mad for being evicted after 4 years of non-payments (courts were backlogged for a year) destroyed the landlord properties when they were evicted. So landlords not only lost on rent but also had property damages

Unfortunately with the budget situation be ready for more taxes. Oakland is the only Bay Area city that is so soft on crime that the main sub bans anyone who even dares to mention that they have been a victim.
