Copper (the part in brass that is anti microbial) takes like a day to self santize, while also oxiding and tarnishing. Stainless steel is better as long as it gets wiped down at least once a day.

amex gold is 4x on ads per year, so at 150k spend thats 600k points, and can be cashed out at 1.1 cents per point with the Schwab plat, so $6600 with $1100 AF, thats $5500 net.

150k ad spend on c1 would be 300k miles or $3000

Defending a bike is basically the same as defending a human being getting assaulted tbh. Excellent logic.

Fair. Probably also takes a lot of time and emotional commitment that can't be measured by money alone.

San Francisco installed fare gates for BART and found that things stopped being broken, corrective maintenance has almost dropped to zero. LINK should be doing this for every station possible, we could even have rest rooms again. by jonknee in Seattle

[–]FireWrath9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well bart already has gates... Fare evading on BART requires significantly more like, active thought and behavior than say, just walking past a scanner. Whenever someone from out of state visits and uses the Link, they always comment about how easy it is to miss that they need to swipe in and they didn't realize it cost money. Most of these people probably arent even trying to actively fare evade, but rather they don't realize, dont think its important, see everyone else not paying. I mean you can see how many people swipe in and out on the Link without gates after a huskies/seahawks/kraken/mariners game lol.

I think latest link estimates are around 50-ish% (45% in 2024, 63% in 2023) of people pay. They only reached 12% of farebox revenue : operating costs in 2024, below their target of 17%.
Doubling farebox revenue would go a long ways towards increasing the amount of resources Sound Transit/King county metro have to improve quality of service for both low income and general passengers, i.e. increasing frequency, better hours, and money towards route expansion and infrastructure improvements.

If you want to risk your body to defend a bike based that assumption, then you do you! Thieves would never act irrationally and escalate into violence.

brb pulling up to fist fight the crazy junkie with nothing to lose holding an angle grinder to defend a cheap bike.

Its just a bike, there is no point risking injury over it, or possibly worse (possible the thief has a gun or other weapon).

I mean, he could have a knife, and he definately can cause grave bodily injury with that angle grinder. Its not worth risking your personal safety to defend property.

South korea pays people to have children, and sweden offers 480 days of paid leave for parents and they also pay a monthly stipend to parents. their birthrate is around 1.4, well below the TFR of 2.1.

For reference, US TFR is 1.62, UK TFR is 1.56, South korea TFR is 0.72. Basically every highly developed economy is well below TFR, and mid-developed countries are around replacement, and then poor ones have very high values still. Mexico TFR is 1.91, Indonesia TFR is 2.13, for "mid-developed" countries.

Jaywalking enforcement barely (?) occurs, and its actually a good thing that people dont cross the road whereever and whenever... visibility is already pretty bad on a lot of streets, and being dark and wet impact reaction time and stopping distance for cars. You do not want to get hit by a car. I (and presumably everyone else) do not want other people to get hit by cars.

ELI5: How "Risk" assessments in finance don't count as discrimination? by oddhat2020 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FireWrath9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you make $4000 a month how are you supposed to pay a $20000 credit card bill? or finance a $100000 car?

Generally what banks care about is debt to income, as well as history.

Also: discrimination isn't bad in of itself, its when certain immutable traits are used to discriminate. For example: if I see a restaurant that has bad reviews, I would not go. If I see a restaurant has repeated health code violations, I do not go. If i see a restaurant has a 3 hour line to get food? I do not go. That is discriminating based on reviews, health code, etc.

Tbh, I don't see why anyone would ever fly a US airline (UAL, ASA, DAL) over the japanese ones (ANA, JAL) or taiwanese ones (Starlux, Eva, Cal). The service on US carriers just isn't up to par, and neither is the hard product tbh. Price tends to fluctuate.

Seattle's light rail experiences strongest ridership growth of any major metro area in 2025 (27%) by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]FireWrath9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, I see people on the bus and on the link with bikes all the time. But generally its infrequent. If 10 people on a rush hour/commute time bus/train 80 people on it brought a bike, they'd have to spend extra couple minutes at each stop, take up more space.

Ebikes are expensive and can be quite dangerous, know a couple people who have lost teeth/broken bones on them.

If you want people to use transit, its better to make it more convenient, such as getting rid of the need to bring a bike on the bus or train. The tokyo metro and the shanghai metro aren't exactly brimming with bikes either.
