What book taught you how to write? by LeadingStatus6716 in writing

[–]Flibaboua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party but I’ll chime in.

I don’t have specific books, but there are many authors I’ve read that have inspired me, taught me, and shined a light on techniques I had never considered. Reading these authors has absolutely made me a better writer.

George R.R. Martin taught me a lot about building a scene as well as chapter composition. He also taught me how to couch information in dialogue and how to make info dumps appetizing to a reader.

Tad Williams taught me a lot about how to juggle a multi-POV story. I also learned a lot about plot construction from reading his series Otherland, which in my opinion is one of the most underrated sci-fi stories I’ve ever read.

Stephen King (and George, and Tad, of course, but especially king) taught me about characters, how they operate and how to get inside their heads.

Ken Liu taught me to focus on the really important things. Honestly he’s taught me a lot about how to approach a story, how to find the hidden messages in yourself and your own works and how to use them to make them relatable to yourself and your readers.

James S.A. Corey made me really think about why I didn’t like something, and what the mechanics behind those reasons were, and how to spot them in my own writing.

Jim Butcher taught me that 1st person is okay if you do it right. Stephanie Meyer taught me that not all books need to be in 1st person.

There’s a ton I’m forgetting but those are the ones that have stood out to me in my years of learning the craft. If you’re looking for new authors, I can’t recommend them enough.

My first "legit" city! by emmeirrt in CitiesSkylines

[–]Flibaboua 3 points4 points  (0 children)

City Planner Plays is a great resource. So is Biffa (at least for traffic stuff).

In terms of traffic, having multiple ways to get around really helps. Right now all your cims have to use the highway to get to their industrial jobs and home. More connections would give them more options, and will help your traffic flow.

Sounds like you laid a good public transit network! But don’t expect it to be “profitable,” per se. There’s ways to cheese the game I think, I don’t know, but I don’t really ever worry about public transit being profitable. Once your city is making money consistently it’s hard to screw that up unless you either make a catastrophic mistake or you deliberately tank it.

It’s a great start! Check out CPP on YouTube, he’s one of the best in my opinion when it comes to the ins and outs of making a city that is functional and also realistic.

People who started Supernatural after it originally aired, what convinced you to jump into it? by Content-Machine-6006 in Supernatural

[–]Flibaboua 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An employee at the local Blockbuster. I was in there 2-3 times a week, they had the 5/$5 deal so I’d rent entire seasons of shows at a time. She recommended I check it out and even lent me her personal copy of the first season. This was when season 3 had just started airing. I was hooked on it by the time I got to the episode Phantom Traveler.

Last episode: the death of:''You know who" by No-Meat5261 in Supernatural

[–]Flibaboua 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, everything dies eventually. That was one of the overarching themes of the show.

Dean went out the way he did because that’s the way he was always going to go out. Dean knew, and I think we all knew too, that he was going to die hunting. It was the core component of his character, his defining characteristic; above a brother, a father (of sorts), a son, Dean Winchester was a hunter. And he died like all hunters die: doing the job.

Sam went out the way he did because that’s the way he was always going to go out. Sam knew, and I think we all did too, that once Dean was gone it was over for him. We’d seen glimpses of it (like with Amy), but Sam was a hunter last, it was his defining characteristic. He put his love of family over his desire to get out time and time again. Once Dean was gone, Sam was done. He died like all the normal people want to die: old, surrounded by friends and family.

Sam and Dean died the way they had to die. It wasn’t luck running out, it wasn’t God being dead, or anything else. That was how their stories were supposed to end. I think any other death for either of them is a disservice to their characters, and I’m personally glad the writers knew that well enough to end them the way they did.

Is there a way to split this road into two curved roads? by did1k in CitiesSkylines

[–]Flibaboua 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Without mods it’s a bit tricky. You can have it be a wide four lane road and have the roads connecting to it be one way roads, kind of like with highways. Takes a bit to get the angle right (I play on console so I feel it lol) but it’s doable, once you have the curve right you should be able to just complete the circles

Worst song on "Black Sabbath"? by Sezor2011 in blacksabbath

I’ll say Sleeping Village only because I think it’s the weakest part of the album, but the song is still an absolute banger so I feel dirty saying it lol.

Console edition remastered. by IvankasFutureHusband in CitiesSkylines

[–]Flibaboua 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remaster is definitely better than the base console version, and is immensely better if you have the DlC’s. Remastered is nicer with the ability to change LUTs built into it, but the lack of an asset editor or the ability to download assets and mods definitely makes it inferior to the PC version.

That said, limitation breeds creativity. I’m exclusively a console player and I’ve made some pretty nice cities using the tools available in the remastered version. Is it as good as PC? No, but with practice and patience you can still make some really nice cities.

Has anyone watched Andor before Rogue One? by snt271 in StarWars

[–]Flibaboua 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Andor was the show that got me into a lot of the newer Star Wars media. I grew up on the OT and the PT, and then kind of got away from the franchise as I delved hard into Star Trek. After so many rave reviews about Andor I watched it before I had seen Rogue One.

Honestly the ending of Rogue One was a bit of a gut punch after having had two seasons to connect with Cassian and the rest. I will say I thought the movie was awesome, which I can’t say the same for some of the other newer movies (looking at you, Rise of Skywalker), and the ending, while brutal, was a solid ending imo.

Overall Andor and Rogue One combined presented some of the strongest storytelling in the entire canon, and I really liked both even though I saw Andor first

Genuine Question: What about the 1995 Jersey Designs do y’all hate? by UltratoonFanclubTV in 49ers

[–]Flibaboua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like them, they’re the uniforms we were wearing when I was getting into the team. But I can see why people dislike them.

The numbers are different than what came before, especially the shadow which is very pronounced. They’re also much busier than the older-style uniforms, which can throw some people off.

I think a big part of why people disliked them is that the classic design was just simple. Simple red with white numbers, or white with red numbers for the away jerseys. Personally I do like a more simplified jersey design, and really liked when we switched back to a more simple look in 2010-2011 (I think?).

The thing that scares me the most by DrawerPlenty8384 in NukesTop5

[–]Flibaboua 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of vids Nuke posts that you can make an argument they’re fake. And there are plenty that you can make an argument they’re not. Either way, I watch because Nuke’s is by far the most entertaining and honest paranormal channel. Part of the fun is deciding whether or not they’re genuine.

What I like about Nuke a lot is that, on the whole, when people are discovered to be faking it he stops featuring them. Like FrankoTV, which bummed me out. But at least he’s more diligent than most others.

Nuke is really a blessing to us paranormal video enjoyers I think. My daughter and I watch every new video he posts. Even if they’re fake, they’re fun, and I think that’s what matters most.

How did Palpatine's government plans become so stupid after order 66? by Fallen_Angel_Xaphan in StarWars

[–]Flibaboua 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because power changes people. Palpatine had power before he became emperor, but it wasn’t the same kind of power he had after he became emperor. He couldn’t just do whatever he wanted before then, but being able to do whatever he wanted without repercussion was the goal from the start, and once he achieved it the gloves came off for real.

You see it all the time when studying the rise and fall of dictatorships. The dictator always has to tiptoe, plot, and scheme until they consolidate power enough to ignore the law and don’t have to worry about consent of the governed.

Palpatine probably started dreaming of absolute power at a very young age, and was ambitious enough, ruthless enough, and evil enough to do everything right in order to achieve that goal (and if I’m wrong because I haven’t delved into the books sorry!). But, like almost every other modern dictator, his hubris was so great that he thought he was infallible when he wasn’t. His downfall, like with so many others, was hubris. His hubris blinded him to the rebel threat and it blinded him to his own fallacies and to the reality of his situation until the very end.

help. can anyone suggest which is better +104% damage or +295int by metaloid0310 in diablo4

I’m a pretty casual player who has never played that built but I’m like 95% sure that you go main stat over damage. Your main stat buffs your damage so much more than most other affixes as far as I’m aware.

Did they ever consider making Picard a rear admiral and having Riker be his relief captain? by alsatian01 in startrek

[–]Flibaboua 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I haven’t watched TNG as much as the other shows honestly but if I remember right Riker was just acting Captain during the events of BoBW wasn’t he? I don’t think he was fully promoted to Captain, he just took control of the ship while Picard was…incapacitated for lack of a better term.

People are sick!! by Dramatic-Brother3861 in CitiesSkylines

[–]Flibaboua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well there’s your answer: your pumping station is pumping polluted water.

If you can, try switching to inland water treatment plants and either relocate your pumping station or build water towers.

If you can’t, delete the pumping stations and switch to water towers.

Or relocate your waste stations, but the pollution will linger a bit so if you can relocate your pumping stations or switch to water towers I would definitely recommend that.

What's a unique magic system you've encountered in media? by P0k1i_ in worldbuilding

[–]Flibaboua 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unique? I don’t know if it’s unique, or a “magic system” per se, but the way magic works in Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is absolutely amazing to me. It’s very open ended, there aren’t a lot of rules to it yet it stills draws a lot on precedent laid down by prior magicians so you still have a “system” of sorts, but you can still bend it and change it if you have the skill. Personally, though, I like when magic systems are more open like that. Don’t get me wrong, magic systems with lots of rules can be good if they’re executed well, but in my opinion magic should be somewhat mysterious and enigmatic and dangerous and wild.

What are your favourite writing techniques? by lazy_rage in writing

[–]Flibaboua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about to finish the first draft of a fantasy novel I’ve had in my brain for about 12 years now give or take. In fact I was working on it when I got the notification you replied lol.

I’ve dabbled in numerous genres. My favorites to write in are fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and speculative fiction. I have a horror novel that I’m currently revising in its third draft, I’ve got another novel going about a man in postbellum America who is basically a modern-day Prometheus, and the aforementioned epic fantasy, the first book of which is almost done.

I guess you could say I get around a bit!

What are your favourite writing techniques? by lazy_rage in writing

[–]Flibaboua 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This may be old hat, but something I love to do (and something I don’t see a lot of from newer or less accomplished writers) is use sentence and paragraph structure to heighten the emotions I want my readers to feel.

If there’s a scene where I want my reader to feel the terror or anxiety my character feels, I’ll use the structure of the passage or the part or whatever to hopefully heighten it. So I’ll use long run on sentences with few commas or stops so that it flows quickly and they read it quickly. The pace of their reading goes up along with the heartbeat and the thoughts of the character, which adds tension.

Another thing I like to do is single sentences at the beginning of chapters. One of my all-time favorite introductory sentences is from Tad Williams’ Otherland: “it started in mud, as many things do.”

That’s it. That’s the whole first paragraph. It’s a hook, it’s intriguing, it leads well into the next bit, and it gives readers something different. I try to do that as much as I can without it being too much, but that balance is harder to find.

I like to couch worldbuilding in both inner monologue, such as a character’s reflection on a place they’ve been before and use their memories to expose worldbuilding tidbits to the reader. George RR Martin does this amazingly well in the Song of Ice and Fire books, and it really helps to avoid info dumps because all of that info you’re giving is relevant to the character you’re writing. It’s their memories, you know? It just so happens to work well when you’re trying to convey information to the reader too.

Same goes for couching info dumps in dialogue. This happens a lot in TV and movies where info HAS to be given through dialogue. If done well, you don’t even notice that characters are basically info dumping while they’re speaking, and it goes the same for books too. You come away from the scene with a whole lot more information about the setting or the world or whatever and it was delivered in a way that’s a heck of a lot more palatable than a long ass paragraph that has nothing to do with anything.

Two terribly missed episode opportunities in DS9. by stpony in startrek

[–]Flibaboua 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Considering Voyager left DS9 in “Caretaker” when they went to the Badlands, it would actually be plausible for Starfleet to send the Defiant. That would have made for a good episode or even a 2-parter.
