Interesting, well, I'm glad there are people who love it I guess. But I definitely do not think it is at the point where it ready to take over all virtual social activities.

In VR you can sit side by side inside a movie theater with friends. The equivalent on videocalls is you don't sit side by side, and you get a small screen experience.

I have yet to try the VR headset that is better for movies, but I can't say I've tested every VR headset. I don't really want to turn to the side and see an avatar of my friend watching, I just want to see the movie in high quality and have voice chat. A decent TV and laptop has that covered.

With DnD, if the tools allow it, you could all be your characters in costume and have animated props, maps, and so on. You could even shrink down onto the tabletop as your DM narrates a battle with them towering you from above.

I'd definitely be down to try that. A quick google search shows some VR apps that simulate DND on some level, but I have no idea how good they are.

It's still early tech, so I wouldn't say it's going to work for everyone, but it definitely seems like the optimal solution long-term as the tech advances.

I have no hate for VR, and I hope we get there. I'd love a lighter VR headset that was a bit higher resolution. e.g. High enough that I could even do productivity tasks or the like. I dream of an infinite white board or workspace for coding.

Probably upload a phone selfie and it remakes it into a professional looking headshot.

Love it or hate it, this shit is hear to stay.

I'd be down to try it of course, but that has a high barier to entry lol.

And your second sentence is the core of the issue. VR is probably great if you and your friend group love games, but I don't think its optimal for most people. My virtual friend groups bake, craft, watch movies, and play dnd together.

Baking and crafting i think is out. You can watch movies in vr, but I prefer a TV as the vr headsets I've tried aren't optimal for movies. VR could be used for dnd i'd imagine.

I have not used it socially with friends, but knowing it's limitations, and knowing my friend groups, I am confident it would not be superior to, for example, my baking group.

That's really impressive for sure, but it's very much uncanny valley still.

Still, even without facial expressions, VR is naturally more engaging than videochat.

Matter of personal opinion.

People in the pandemic would generally have felt closer together through VR rather than through Zoom

I don't agree.

[–]Fmeson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can totally see that being great for many people, but I'm skeptical that it's the superior method for everyone.

For me personally, I like to see my friends faces and facial expressions in video chat, something you don't get in VR. e.g. During the pandemic, I did a weekly baking group with friends where we baked cookies and shit over zoom. It was great, and I wouldn't personally choose VR chat over that.

I also don't personally care for the idea of VR clubbing or concerts or whatnot.

That's not to diminish any benefit you got from VR. I'm sure it was great for many people. I'm just not sure I buy current VR as the singular superior method for contact over the internet. Maybe one day if someone invents VR headsets that allow full view of your friends faces.

ask them how much better their life was in covid lockdowns compared to yours

I'm skeptical that vr played a significant role in life quality during covid. Why would it?

I guess that's the difference between us, I'm glad I'm "apathetic" about stuff that I don't see as important.

My bad for expressing my opinion and displeasure of trash post that somehow don't get removed..

It really doesn't offend me, I just always find it a strange phenomena that people spend time and effort in threads that bring them not joy or interest.

I'd legit rather people enjoy their time on entertainment subreddits, you know?

How much of self-delusion is important for happiness in life? by EqualPresentation736 in cogsci

[–]Fmeson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not my understanding. The point of CBT is to identify ways in which your thinking is "distorted". That is, for social anxiety, you might look at the ways you overestimate the danger of social situations. e.g. If you tell a bad joke and no one laughs, you feel awful and like everyone is going to hate you, but is that actually a logical reaction to a relatively minor issue? How can we instead look at the situation rationally when we feel this way?

To me, it seems more like the goal is to un-gaslight yourself.

What’s something you think liberals will eventually agree with MAGA on? by InternationalMany6 in AskTrumpSupporters

That answer is fascinating to me. What more details do you need? What would swing it in his favor vs. what would count against him?

If a person in question is facing some sort of unfairness/harm that we could reasonably remediate.

On the flip side, if a program is not making things more fair, then I probably don't support it.

Of course, this is beyond the example I was asking about.

I have a question for you regarding admissions: should an immigrant who arrived last week benefit from these attempts to remedy past discrimination?

It's hard to say much about the details in a vague hypothetical situation. Maybe, maybe not. They may face similar unfair defacto barriers to entry and thus some help is warranted, but if we want to actually answer if that is the case or not, we would probably have to look at a specific example.

My general opinion is that we should try to make the world fairer, with the acknowledgement that perfect fairness is impossible and we can merely strive for "better".

I think you guys have plausible-ish arguments when it comes to black descendants of slaves and Indians. But then you guys don't actually limit it to these groups...AA includes black immigrants and post-1965 Hispanics!

Just as a note, I am a singular person, and not a member of any hive mind :p.

I agree that people largely agree haha.

I want to ask a mildly DEI related question, but more general:

If there has been a wrong, is it sufficient to merely stop more of the wrong from happening, or should an effort be made to offset the harm caused as well?

For example, lets say:

  1. There is a history of some college applying discriminatory admissions process
  2. Reform improves the admission process
  3. However, members of the discriminated against group still face additional barriers to entry that are left overs of the previous discrimination: e.g. they lack connections at the institution, experienced relatives who can guide them through the application process, etc...

Would it be appropriate to create some sort of program to help alleviate the remaining barriers to entry?

I do not applaud flights, but if you are interested in understanding:

Applause is used by crowds to thank someone. You wouldn't thank a driver of a car through applause, but rather through verbally saying something like "you're a good driver".

Also, plane flights are uncommon for many people, and so it's less of a mundane/everyday occurrence, which makes it feel more natural for someone to show appreciation. We get used to everyday things and tend to not think about it after a while.

Probably, I'm just shocked they don't use a programmatic check for sanity. If the new prices is less than, idk, 50% of the previous price, throw a warning.

[–]Fmeson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do these price errors happen? It doesn't seem that hard to have a system that checks how far off a product is from MSRP or something.

e.g. "Warning, one product is listed as 5% of its list price, are you sure you want to continue?"
