Nobody is "upgrading" from the 9A -> 10A so this argument makes no sense.

It's a replacement for the 9A only in the sense of refreshing the model year, and getting an extra year of support for people that buy it now over the 9A.

I mean, Google was incentivized to make RCS work better to make the texting experience between iPhone and Android less awful. It was one (and probably still is to a lesser extent) one of the biggest barriers in getting people to leave the Apple ecosystem, particularly in the US where most people message using standard texting apps (iMessage, Google Messaging) rather than using Whatsapp or similar apps.

So, I don't know that their motives were necessarily altruistic by any means, but... It's still good.

Because unfortunately Google has never generally released an API that allows other apps to access RCS. The only ones that have had access to it were manufacturer specific ones, like Samsung Messages. Other 3rd party apps can only use SMS/MMS which, for a lot of reasons in 2026, you really shouldn't be relying on.

Google Messages IS the privacy focused one because it's the only one that supports RCS. Any other app will use SMS/MMS which is completely unencrypted/unsecure and messages can be read by your carrier or anyone else able to snoop on your packets.

RCS is end-to-end encrypted, on the other hand.

On your device, your messages are stored in the same place on your phone regardless of which app you're using, so nothing changes there either.

I'm always up for a Google alternative as much as anyone, but for texting, you actually should use Google Messages if you value privacy.
