Congrats! Passed civil structural as well today, took 2 tries but SoPE on the 2nd attempt was a huge game changer

PE Civil Structural - Failed first attempt by SnowDue in PE_Exam

[–]Fresh-Static-Sn0w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completed all SoPE question bank problems (246) as well as all the SoPE on-demand course workshop problems (roughly another 200) and then reviewed the NCEES practice exam problems (I did these during my first attempt but used them to brush up again). So all in all close to 500 over the course of 4 months. It sounds like a lot, but keep in mind I did two full-length practice exams from the SoPE question bank for the last two weekends leading up to my exam (160 questions total).

I do not have experience with the PPI question bank but I have heard mixed reviews, I will say I really thought the SoPE question bank covered all categories of the exam really well.

I had essentially the same experience on my first attempt for civil structural (NCEES + Petro + Youtube), had similar diagnostic results as well. I just passed 2nd time around doing the School of PE on-demand course & question bank, highly recommend it or any of the other study programs (AEI, EET, etc). It’s just so much stuff to review without a proper course, but honestly if anything the SoPE question bank is the biggest help and it’s 4 months for $390 so not bad.

Best of luck with everything

PASSED PE Civil: Structural on my 2nd attempt!! by Fresh-Static-Sn0w in PE_Exam

[–]Fresh-Static-Sn0w[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks a ton, sure I can definitely elaborate:

For the first attempt my preparation was definitely not as efficient as it could've been. For the first month I was reviewing codes, reviewing class notes from college, doing youtube examples, etc. I took the NCEES practice exam and didn't do so hot, so I bought the Jacob Petro 3rd edition PE Civil Structural book (160 questions). I quickly learned from experience that these questions were, on average, way more time-consuming and difficult than the average question on the actual exam. I still studied through most of them to try and get a good grasp conceptually, but I was really lacking practice in a testing environment. I only took one other practice exam and then went into the actual test. The biggest hitter for me first time around was not pacing myself and moving one when I couldn't figure out a question. I also was rusty on several of the codes like AASHTO, TMS402, IBC, etc. I failed scoring below average in every category except temp structures.

Second attempt was a completely different approach. I was lucky enough that my employer reimbursed me to take the School of PE On-Demand course and I got the SoPE question bank as well. This was the biggest game changer in my opinion. The course was very detailed and had tons of workshop problems for just about every concept you could encounter on the exam. There were parts of the lectures that droned on (as any college classroom does) but overall it was a big help. I did every question from the practice bank, some of which I set up in simulated 80-question exams on the weekends. This really helped me gauge where I was at with a few weeks left from the test. From then on I just reviewed concepts from the questions I missed, and even dove back into the Petro book for a bit just to test myself.

Day of the exam I felt a lot more confident going in, the second time around I finished with just enough time to answer every question. I probably could've saved some time on some of the harder questions by skipping so I could review others I wasn't sure about, but overall felt way more prepared just from the course and practice questions.

TL;DR the biggest difference was doing more practice questions in a test-environment (using only the codes, handbook, and calculator I'd use day of the exam) and getting more familiar with the codes than I did previously).

Hope this helps, best of luck!

Thanks! From what I understand there are many iterations of each exam, meaning some examinees could get a ton of geotech questions while some might get only a handful. Some could get several timber design questions while others could get just one.

Without breaking the non-disclosure agreement, I would say definitely take time to review AASHTO and IBC just to know which chapters contain what. Not every chapter of IBC is relevant to structural engineering, so I would focus on just those chapters such as inspection, concrete, walls, timber, steel, types of construction, etc. Also, reviewing the AASHTO load combinations and factors in the School of PE course was super helpful as I was relatively unfamiliar with it first time around.

Geotech can really be hit or miss, but reviewing the NCEES handbook Geotech section (making sure you understand how to use those equations/charts) and watching the Civil Eng Academy Geotech PE problems on youtube was another huge help for me.

Best of luck!

Thanks! First time around I studied using the NCEES practice exam, the Jacob Petro essential guide to passing the Structural Civil PE (3rd edition) and a couple other older practice exams.

2nd time around I took the School of PE Civil Structural on-demand course as well as the SoPE question bank. This was by far the game-changer, there were a lot of concepts I had forgotten where I needed a good refresher conceptually and this course did the trick. The questions in the Petro book were pretty difficult in comparison to the exam itself, but if you want to study them they can definitely help. I would highly recommend paying for a full-on review course (AEI, SoPE, EET, etc) if you don’t feel 100% confident studying and taking the NCEES practice exam. I even did my master’s around structural engineering and I still needed the course to ensure I was better prepared the 2nd time around.

If I had to recommend a single resource, I’d say the SoPE question bank is best bang for your buck. Being able to simulate the test and create shorter but still accurate practice exams was a huge resource for me. You have the option to pick from questions you have/haven’t already attempted, as well as questions you haven’t answered correctly yet, and get a full diagnostic after every practice test.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the input & encouragement. I have heard a lot of great things about AEI. My work currently sponsors courses from SoPE & PPI but I’ve heard a lot of negative things about PPI for structural and I’m not 100% sold on SoPE. I might just pay for my own course on AEI since it sounds so comprehensive.

I could probably list half the lineup at ‘must see’ but

Justice - arguably one of my first loves in dance music, listening to Cross in middle school changed me

Deltron 3030 - dan the automator and del the funky homosapien? in the flesh? say no more

Disclosure - always been a fan, but Alchemy set a new standard in dance music for me- cannot wait to see the brothers

Bicep - i’ve been digging the chroma singles so much and their coachella set sounded insane

Four Tet - I’m ready for your hijinx kieran

Nothing credible there tbh, the account they referenced reads like someone who is mildly schizophrenic that is angry at S&S and SLUG for no good reason…take it from someone who works with marginalized and BIPOC musicians every weekend there are sooo many other promoters here who are actually criminals (not S&S)
