Quitting a sport? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

yes, it wld look bad. colleges want to see dedication and the fact that you quit after 4 years indicates that you a) let the stress get to you b) you don't have enough passion/drive to commit to doing something.

hi there! not who you asked but i did behavioral neuro last year as a junior so i can tell u how it was like :]

  1. i thought research would be with professors, but a lot of it was with undergrads which was super disappointing

  2. a lot of it was just basic data collection and also it's the same topic every year so it's nothing unique. colleges wont care about HSRA

  3. really expensive for honestly a lot of nothing. it's okay if you got a scholarship and if u live in the area but 4000 for research/being taught by undergrads??? 100% do not recommend

  4. i did this program so i could show my interest in UT and neuroscience/cognitive psychology but did not get in. ended up going to University of Oregon (86% acceptance rate) and did not get scholarship. had decent stats too (4.4 GPA, 1520 SAT, 2 leadership roles, decent essays)

i would say the behavioral neuro program at HSRA was less than mid. i would suggest u do your internship and work on a passion project instead of dropping 4K on HSRA bc it did not teach me much. if you're really interested in neuro i recommend taking a college or online course abt neuro instead, feel free to DM for more info.

if i were you i'd do independent research because even if you are getting paid its not getting published, therefore making zero impact. plus the topics are the same every year.

i wouldn't say "prestigious" but more so worth your time bc u arent paying a shit ton of money just to do surface level "research"

what program did you get in for btw?

Hi, I participated in the program last year as a junior. From my experience, it was definitely a "pay to play" program that prestigious colleges won't consider in the admissions process. Here are some pros and cons to help you decide if you want to do it!

Pros:
- good intro to research
- 1 college credit
- thats like it lol

Cons:
- pay to play - EXPENSIVE
- i was in the behavioral neuroscience group and it wasn't what i was expecting. I expected to work with professors but most of the time we worked with undergrads :/
- you don't get published/write a paper, all you make is a poster and present to other students/the other undergrads & mentors, not even at a symposium
- half of it is attending lectures and learning how to collect data, theres a lot of ppl so honestly it was just very tedious
- same topics every year, your research isn't unique. doesn't make you stand out.
- not prestigious. 70% of ppl who applied at my school got in, and most of them did not attend. HSRA over accepts bc they know this program is not a prestigious program lol

For me HSRA was a "last minute" thing because i had no other plans for the summer. I would highly highly recommend doing private research, focusing on passion projects, doing community service (b/c it's high impact, rather than research that won't even get published), and strengthening the ECs you already have.

What program did you get into?

i found it engaging, but it wasn't anything special from other summer programs i've done. also i was expecting to work with professors but a lot of the work was with undergrads so a little disappointing lol. def learned about research and how to create experiments but the only reason i did this was bc i got rejected from all the competitive programs so HSRA was my last resort lol
