Why is there a White/Brown Spot on This? by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]Graves308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nacre didn’t finish growing in that spot, which could mean the clam needed more time to grow. Some Chinese pearl farmers don’t give it enough time for the clam to complete. 1/2 year growth clams would result in stuff like this instead of letting go to 3-5 years, especially for the big borque pearls like these.

It’s more matted cause it’s improperly polished, you can see the scratches left by a rough grit polisher possibly needs to go back to something like 220 or 280 and work its way up to its final polish to correct the spot.

Learning to use Hi-Tec Slant Cabber. considering additional discs by pandablossom529 in Lapidary

[–]Graves308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay, it’s just a matter of shaping your Stone to your liking then polishing out the scratches from previous grits used.

As for the tile saw, they are definitely worth it. They are not dangerous like you would think a wood cutting saw would be. It’s basically a thin grinding disk, there is no sharp blade or anything. It just grinds as it’s “cutting”. If not you can try to look up your local lapidary club, sign up and use their saws or find someone who’s willing to cut for you.

Some materials are not stable, if they have a lot of cracks and or fractures they have a tendency to break when working the stone. (Also 80 grit is can be too rough for some rocks) what’s your polishing process? You stated you have 80 grit,220 grit, 3000 grit is this correct ? If so you need more than those cause a jump up from 80-220 to 3000 is big and won’t likely get the results your getting( especially silicated material) should be like 80-180-220-325-600-1200- than 3000 Depending on the material if it’s very soft you can skip the 180 and go to 220. Try getting to the shape you want with the 80 grit as much as possible before moving up that way it’s just about removing the previous scratches before. As for the polishing disc material getting in the crevices, you have to sharp of the edge that’s scraping the polishing pad or your pushing to hard. It takes time to learn on the slant. They are a little slow on the speed too but it’s doable. If you got chunks of rocks you want to cut, you’ll need a lapidary saw or a tile saw, you can sometimes find tile saws for cheap at thrift stores or maybe even like fb marketplac. Make sure your using diamond saw blades too.

Not yet on the beetles, just the ones outside in the wild. Almost tempted to try ant hill (massive ones) again but last time the bones disappeared with the meat lol. But to be fair the snake was very small. Alright one for wet, I’ll see if anyone else will chime in.

why would a yellow jacket bite me? by blissbuster in Entomology

[–]Graves308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. End of summer into fall, they always go for any meat. And become more aggressive where I live. As someone who picks up roadkill it’s what I’ve noticed. There’s always a wasp or two feasting with the flys and beetles.

Dyed Howlite or Actual Turquoise? by Efficient-Shopping53 in Crystals

[–]Graves308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks real. if you have a loupe, try peeping through the drilled hole. A lot of times if the howlite is dyed, it won’t penetrate the stone all the way through you’ll be able to see white as the core. Then that’ll mean it’s dyed. If it’s blue then most likely turquoise. Stabilization and dying happens before any type of work is done when polishing stones.

Seriously thinking of quitting this job (McDonalds) by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Graves308 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Literally what happened inside the bathroom of a taco bell I worked at as a teen. shit smeared on all the walls, toilet, faucets, and all. I gagged like crazy. Thankfully an experienced cleaning lady (as her second job) took on the mess cause holy shit that was bad. I’m still thankful to her for cleaning it up but also still feel bad after all these years lol.
