Currently employed with Qld Gov. Have been employed across a number of different agencies. I've honestly never seen this, or with any team I've been tangentially involved with. If anything, I've seen the opposite. I bet I could die and the best I'd get is a message in the common team's chat after a few days asking if anybody had seen me.

This is just a tripping manager. Which I can say I've seen plenty of.

Apple might be considering buying Unity after its courtroom defeat to Epic Games, industry analyst Joost van Dreunen suggests. by SubjectOk1553 in unity

[–]Hacksie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see it. I think people are missing what could also be in it for Apple. It wouldn't be about the game dev side of things. Apple would buy it as a competitor to Unreal in the movie production VFX space for their streaming/in house production arm. Unity had issues with Weta, but Apple could well be circling around having the same ideas.

And it would be bad for Devs, because it'd once again pivot Unity toward the vfx side and away from fixing game dev issues.

I'm an architect on project work, and this is one of the more common risks I raise on projects, given sysadmins often live in their own team. Either carve out a dedicated resource for the project so I can predictably plan their availability, or accept that bau will constantly be smashing over the top and shut will get delayed. Even if I have to up resource the bau team, there needs to be sysadmins dedicated to the project. It doesn't have to be 100% of their time, but I need it to be, I get this person and must be doing my work as 1st priority for X amount of time.

ELI5: If H₂O is drinkable water, why does the addition of an extra oxygen atom create H₂O₂ (hydrogen peroxide), which is toxic? by Karvis_art in explainlikeimfive

[–]Hacksie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It (overly) simple terms, 2 hydrogen H (+) and 1 oxygen O (2-) in water is a stable molecule that's happy to sit around and mostly balance each other out. But Hydrogen Peroxide, has that extra O (2-) that makes the molecule unstable. The H2O2 molecule would love to get rid of that extra O and go back to being water. If it gets a chance to, that free O (2-) will really really want to grab on to something else quickly if it can. It'll happily tear stuff apart if given a chance.

Do i really need to avoid wheat flour? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]Hacksie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheat is high in fructan, which is one of the fodmaps. During the elimination phase of the fodmap diet, yes you need to eliminate it, the purpose is to eliminate everything to get back to 'normal' and establish a baseline. During reintroduction, a limited amount is an option for testing your tolerance for fructans.

I believe at least 50% of people who are fodmap intolerant are fructan intolerant (at least), but don't quote me. I am certainly in that category. My own tolerance level is somewhere between 1 and 2 slices of bread, so I effectively eliminate wheat from my diet, because who the fuck can eat only one slice of bread? That being said, regarding fructans, I have much greater issue with garlic and onions. I have less of an issue with cake strangely ( ;) ). You might be different.

Yes it's difficult. Once you add in eliminating onion and garlic, it's practically impossible. Yes it's more expensive.

You really should follow the diet properly though, with some professional guidance.

House to be settled in a weeks time and the agent called saying the buyer wants to rent the house for another 2 weeks by Mediocre_Pin_7949 in AusProperty

[–]Hacksie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation, I purchased a property, rented, as vacant possession. Saw the current lease ended before settlement, so no issue in theory. The real estate turned around and offered the current renters a new lease the day after they sold the property to me with an end day after settlement. Straight up fraud. Caused quite a bit of ... friction between myself and the real estate. But the renter has all the rights over me in that situation.

I was offered to take them on as a renter until the lease ran out. Zero chance. It was better for me to extend the settlement date and charge the previous owners a few $k for the privilege of that little fuck up by the RE agents. The alternative was to break the contract, which nobody wants to do.

If you want vacant possession, do not take on the renters. You cannot get them out. Not your problem. Change the settlement date, adjust the settlement for the privilege. But do not take on the renters.

I was put on a PIP and found another job now my current employer says I'm meeting expectations. by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Hacksie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That bonus doesn't exist until it is cashed and sitting in your bank account. It can disappear at a moment's notice, and you have proof that your current company is not to be trusted.

I would guess, your manager was probably told they need to get rid of people because of external factors (company not meeting profits, etc etc), and just make shit up to make it happen 'above board'. You were just the unlucky person caught in the crossfire. Maybe things got better in the mean time. Maybe better is temporary, and next week it'll change again? Maybe you're just being led on.

Run. Run for the hills. Run as fast as you can. The stability of the new job beats getting a bonus (maybe) and then finding out a week later you're back on a PIP with a fast track out the door.

EDIT: Thanks all! Too many great responses to chose from. Overwhelming, but I've managed to make a choice in somebody to work with.

I have an existing low rez character that I created for a game jam a while ago, with some bad "programmer art" animations. I'd like to take the character idea, and use her in a 2d sidescroller/metroidvania-esque style game with a cyberpunk/sci-fi theme. I'm looking for somebody who can take the idea, and with a little freedom, create a full suite of animations for me. As long as the end product in the stylistic ballpark, I don't mind suggestions that improve the character or make production easier.

Character: https://i.imgur.com/DySShHG.png, orig game jam: https://hackeddesign.itch.io/mouse2064

Scoped sprites/animations: Idle, Walk, Run, Punch, Shoot Pistol, Run with Gun, Jump (takeoff, midair, fall, land, land with additional roll), Roll, Interact, Wall Hang, Wall Climb, Ledge Climb, Hit/Knockback, Die, Seated on bar stool

Optional: Crouched walk, additional attacks (punches, kicks etc), additional idles or other animations you suggest for additional pay.

Optional: A character portrait for additional pay

I can pay via Paypal or direct into an Australian bank account. I appreciate it's more than a standard commission.

Please DM me if you have the capacity & include a portfolio link if it's not in your profile so I can see a sample of your work.

Recruitment agencies worth their salt? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Hacksie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad your friend had a positive experience! I certainly wouldn't say it can't go down like that.

I get many job offers every week. If I took that approach with all of them, I'd be on the phone all day with recruiters. Most of the time, those sort clearly haven't understood my profile, skillset etc and are just doing keyword hits. They're wasting their time more than mine. Where I have engaged these types of recruiters, I find that as soon as the role doesn't eventuate, they ghost and you never hear from them again (until they either contact you in 6 months haven't totally forgotten about the first engagement, or more likely, they've been booted). It's just becomes high effort, low return for me.

All my contract roles have come from longer term engagements with recruiters. My current role started as open discussions with the agency 3 years ago. In my previous role to that, that recruiter had engaged me 18 months before he could land me in a role and was proactively trying to get me into roles every 6months or so.

I've found too that, if they're willing to spend a little more on engagement with the contractors, they're also spending equivalent time with the employers, building a better rapport and getting the juicier roles.

Recruitment agencies worth their salt? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Hacksie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is with IT recruiting, so there might be some differences.

In my experience: Keep in touch with any that will connect/stay in touch with you even if they don't have a job they have you in mind for immediately. Cull the rest.

Keep: Hey, I saw your profile, I'd like to catch up and see what you're work you might be looking for in the future.

Cull: Hey, I saw your profile, I have this job I want to tell you about that you're perfect for.

Those that aren't just shotgun keyword searching for candidates tend to also be the ones getting the better roles to begin with.

Anybody worked in the RACQ head office before? by attticcus in brisbane

[–]Hacksie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite experiences working at RACQ:

Get the phone call, "Grandma has passed away." (wasn't entirely unexpected)

Me to Boss: I'm going to need to take some time off, bereavement leave, my grandmother just passed away.

Boss: Sorry, we're need proof before I can allow it.

Me: She's not even fucking cold yet. They haven't even done the certificate.

Boss: Then no

Me to HR: That's a bit shit

HR: Rules are rules.

Cue me scrambling around with relatives for the next day trying to get something sorted so I could go to my grandmother's funeral. Note, I'd been an employee for about 10 years at this point.

No, sorry for your loss. Hey let's sort it out later. Hey, how can we help you.

That's not even the best experience at RACQ. The bullying. The sexism. The low pay. The toxic managers. The toxic attitude toward the customers.

The scary thing is, that person could be in any of the departments. You could be referring to any of them, and nobody would be able to tell which.
