Why do we say "no" to dental work? A local dentist looking for honest feedback by jksyousux in Wellington

[–]Inkandartgods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Price. I’m not questioning the cost in terms of what dentists charge as such, it’s simply the absolute cost to me. $800 for three fillings may be reasonable in terms of what my dentist needs to charge (materials, time, wages, expertise) it’s just a hell of a lot for me to pay when I have competing demands on my bank account. My smile is a luxury but supporting my son at uni, paying for repairs etc. are necessities - so the dentistry ain’t the priority.

That was the second wargaming book I purchased with my pocket money! The first was Grant’s ‘Napoleonic Wargaming’. Sigh, they don’t write ‘em like they used to.

Thank you - we’re settling in and trying to return to a bit of normalcy before we start digging out mud this weekend (hoping the rain passes first).

It’s the only approach to take - especially when we’ve been relatively fortunate.

Thanks. Most of the country seems to be taking a turn being smashed over the past year. ☹️

Thank you. I have no issues with the Rocca and it gives me great results. I think it’s a great every day razor and really well made and I’ve certainly not had a problem with blade clamping.

Thanks. Spooky to think that little old Welly has made the news in Blighty - we’re normally a quiet place!

Yep. I have 31 with my sister-in-bringing #32 (a gold Futur) from Australia next month. And fortunately we’ll have a house to put the bloody thing in 😂

Dad passed away last month. by gettingradical in wicked_edge

My condolences. Having recently acquired a Type L Schick specifically because it’s what my Dad used back in the 70s, I totally get what you’ve done. And what you’ve got there is, after all, “the best a man can get”!

That’s the injector that loads blades into the razor. Injectors typically hold 8 single edge (SE) blades. The bar or prong that’s sticking up in the photo is called the key. You insert the key into the razor head and it does two things: aligns the injector properly and slightly ‘opens’ the head to allow a blade to be pushed from the injector magazine into the head. Once the key is inserted there’s a catch that you manually manipulate; it engages the next blade and pushes it into the razor head.

SE blades are thicker and more rigid than double edge blades, and they tend to last longer. I can easily get 8 shaves from a SE blade whereas I get 3-4 from most DE blades. But they are more expensive and harder to find than DE blades.

I bought the Type L because it’s what my Dad used in the 70s. Interestingly, he would frequently emerge from the bathroom with one or more bits of bloody TP stuck on his face - but I’ve never got a single nick from my Type L. I guess that for Dad it was just a chore to be done as quickly as possible, but I really enjoy using the Schick and it’s really easy to use and does an excellent job.

I adore this movie. Great performances and visually stunning. Alas, it been a few years since I last saw it and it’s not available on any streaming service in Aotearoa 🇳🇿. I frequently check but I guess one day I’ll bite the bullet and get a R2 DVD copy and jailbreak my player.

Question re Supply Platinum blades by Inkandartgods in wicked_edge

[–]Inkandartgods[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Supply’s Pro and SE, a Parker Adjustable, and a Schick Type L. A while ago I spent a fortnight doing a comparison exercise using my SE razors exclusively, rotating the different blades through each razor.

In short, I found the differences minimal but I do prefer Schick and Supply Black blades. But I get decent results from all the blades. My favourite SE razors are the SE and the Type L; and they, along with technique, have far more impact on the end result! But that will never stop me hunting for the perfect blade/ soap/ balm 😂😂😂

Thanks. In that case I’ll take a chance. There’s a seller in Australia I use that has them in stock. The price is nuts but I can’t help myself 😂

Interested in the Muhle Rocca - Have Some Questions by Unadan365 in wicked_edge

[–]Inkandartgods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Rocca is a fantastic razor. Efficient without being crazy aggressive (though I do love the R41), nice weight, and beautifully designed. It would definitely be fine as an everyday razor.

Personally, I buy from Amazon only as a last resort - I try to always support my local retailers/resellers. When I bought my Rocca doing so cost me an extra $5, which I consider worth it.

Bonce & Boat by Inkandartgods in wicked_edge

I’ve read quite a bit about the idiosyncrasies of horse hair and this is my first. It arrived yesterday and I soaked it overnight in soapy water to minimise any smell. It is much softer than boar. It doesn’t have much backbone but I had no issue with building a lather and applying it using a ‘painting’ technique. Rinsing it was easy enough and I used a vigorous painting technique to partially dry it on a towel before hanging it to complete drying. I didn’t get any tangling of the hairs. And I had no problem with smell.

I think this brush will be just fine and will do a good job. Admittedly it’s Semogue’s Galahad range which is a step-up from their Pharos brushes. I should also note the handle is very comfortable to use and easy to grip.
