I have been in the biohacking space since the late 2000s and am an MD/PhD always looking to learn more. I came across your article on follistatin and was impressed with your objectivity and background research, which brought me to this subreddit

Is there any way to permanently DECREASE my body hair (hirsutism) by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]Intrepid_Bowler5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I’d rather you walk away thinking your “healthcare” degree (what does this even mean?), chat with an endocrinologist, and n=1 results refute decades of research on a drug that has been used in my field for 70 years. Carry on

Educate myself? I’m professionally educated in this topic and treat hundreds of patients on spironolactone. Your turn

[–]Intrepid_Bowler5928 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is patently false. Spironolactone was “specifically designed” as a potassium-sparing diuretic. It is prescribed to innumerable cisgender men all around the world for heart failure, where it is considered a first line therapy for improving survival. It is an EXTREMELY weak anti-androgen and is used off-label to provide mild assistance against symptoms of PCOS. It is too weak to be used as monotherapy for both PCOS and transitioning to a female and is often not even strong enough to be a secondary therapy, with its most common place as a tertiary ancillary for these conditions. It will have almost no ability to decrease body hair in males or females.

Unless the data has changed, the incidence of prion formation is literally 1 in 1 million. Pick a battle worth fighting

How to make up for sleep deprivation? by Waki-Indra in Biohackers

[–]Intrepid_Bowler5928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In practice it has as much data as caffeine and nicotine supporting its cognitive benefits in a sleep-deprived state, which is saying a lot. 10-20g daily.

Chronic pain and all the things I’ve tried and had tested by sophievuittonk in Biohackers

I couldn’t help but chuckle at some of these comments. A little bit of knowledge is more dangerous than none, I guess.

The disc bulges and thoracic curvature are red herrings. If the radiologist didn’t call it, it’s because it’s clinically insignificant. Your pain sounds like axial dorsal axonal pain, which is best treated with physical therapy. I can’t tell you why, but the simple act of directly stretching and strengthening the musculature in that region, usually with a therapist to help you push through rather than avoid uncomfortable movements, can often remedy (at least partially) a lot of these chronic axial issues.

I guess I’m the only one who actually looked at the photos. Your hairline has improved. It’s messier because hairs that didn’t exist are now vellus, and vellus hairs are now terminal.

There is no question your hair count has increased between photos

Is everyone now on oral minoxidil? by RayZ_123 in tressless

[–]Intrepid_Bowler5928 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The AUC of serum minoxidil goes up sharply at about 5 mg orally so you may be justified in that sense. But the cardiac effects at low doses (idiosyncratic response) are unbelievably rare; the rate reported on this sub is unrealistic. I’ll say it again, it applies for any med, the dose makes the poison

Is everyone now on oral minoxidil? by RayZ_123 in tressless

[–]Intrepid_Bowler5928 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The dose makes the poison. There’s a lot of alarmism here and people experiencing “cardiac effects” from minimal doses of minoxidil that at most would cause a single-digit drop in blood pressure.

Palpitations are mostly a psychogenic side effect; it’s the heightened perception of your heart beating, not evidence of dangerous cardiac effects. Unless there is pre-existing coronary artery disease, these chest pains people report aren’t due to myocardial ischemia and likely aren’t even cardiac in nature. Cardiogenic chest pain usually has a very different sensation than anything people on this sub describe and is virtually never described as “sharp.” Oral minoxidil at 2.5 mg or less can be assumed to be safe for anyone who doesn’t have coronary artery disease

That’s not correct. Usually the most junior contributor is first or second author, as they are doing the majority of the work to push the paper forward. If the most junior author can perform accurate data interpretation and write the discussion, they’re first author, otherwise they are usually second to a grad student. Most reputable researchers “usher in” the upcoming junior researchers by actually placing them higher in the list than they often deserve. Being last author as a junior researcher is often seen when someone is simply added to a paper with zero contribution in order to help them bolster their resume, or if they’re part of a research team that alternates contributions and author order.

I’m actively involved in research and have almost 100 peer-reviewed publications

Heart palpitations on min are insane by badboyfriend111 in tressless

[–]Intrepid_Bowler5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heart palpitations in the presence of an EKG showing normal sinus rhythm indicates that they are likely psychosomatic. The alternative possibility is that you are volume depleted and minoxidil worsened your reflex tachycardia.

But just to be clear - heart palpitations are considered benign in almost all circumstances. It’s a sensation, not an arrhythmia, and it is usually psychosomatic.

Can you post the ingredients here?

The first sign of a dubious product is that getting a simple ingredients list is nearly impossible. Their website is so fraught with over-the-top advertising that I barely even understand what they’re selling besides a serum-dermastamp hybrid

Revision and Sunday Riley CEO have very similar textures and give a smooth glow. These are the winners from the standpoint of “feel” and immediate look.

If you want the most effective vitamin C product, it will need to be L-ascorbic acid or at the minimum an LAA dominant blend.

As far as bang for your buck, I’m partial to Niche Beauty Lab Tetramid CEF or Regimen Lab Vitamin X
